This is the first stage of the post-school transition process where students will be informed by a panel of experts in the tertiary sectors both on the range of pathways available and application procedures. Year 10 Work Experience June It has been fantastic to witness the wide range of placements our students have already secured, including the police force, MCG, World Vision, media (radio, television, production companies & print media), architectural firms, engineers, the building trades, hospitals, motor mechanics, Australian Defence Forces, Melbourne Aquarium, dance companies and the music & entertainment industry. Students have until May 31 to finalise their placements 2. Year 10 Careers Swinburne TAFE Apprenticeship & Traineeship Taster Day Croydon Campus Thursday June pm Students who would like to participate in two practical workshops on this day must see me ASAP as places fill very quickly. This day is optional and free but you have to arrange your own transport to and from the TAFE. Participation in this event will look great on your resume if you intend applying for a New Apprenticeship (traditional apprenticeships and traineeships) in the future. Australian Defence Force GAP Program 2011 Year 12 students only. This program provides an opportunity for exiting Year 12 students (within the previous two years), to experience continuous military training & lifestyle before going onto study or a selected career. It is a one-year experience. There is no guarantee of ongoing employment beyond the 12 months but it definitely is a possibility. Full applications are made on line May The process will take about 15 minutes. In 2011 there will not be any air force vacancies, only navy and army. Considering a career in Surveying?? Since the Egyptians built pyramids, surveyors have been working out where things go and determining where boundaries belong. We need surveyors to build roads and cities, define property, find and mine resources and measure changes in the earth. Problem: Not enough surveyors to meet the demand. Australian surveyors are among the best in the world, with work opportunities from Antarctica to Dubai. Using the latest technology, you could be measuring polar ice caps, building skyscrapers, or developing new land for housing. See: Study surveying at RMIT (Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) or the Bachelor of Applied Science (Geomatics)), both 4-year degree courses, or the TAFE Diploma of Surveying or Advanced Diploma of Spatial Information Services. 9. Occupational Therapy at Australian Catholic University (ACU) ACU will introduce the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy at the Melbourne campus in Info: Contact Future Students on Also available at Deakin, La Trobe and Monash Universities. 13. You want to be a paramedic? This has become a popular option for many students and is available at the following universities: Australian Catholic University (Ballarat campus) has the double degree of Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Paramedicine. Last year s ATAR was La Trobe (Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton) have the Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Paramedic Practice. The ATAR for the Bendigo campus was (Years 2, 3 and 4 of the course are conducted at Bendigo). Monash (Peninsula campus) has the Bachelor of Emergency Health (Paramedic) and also a double degree combining paramedics with nursing. The ATAR for the double degree last year was Victoria University (St Albans campus) has the Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic). Last year s ATAR was It would be wise to consider studying nursing, either as part of a double degree or as a single degree in addition to paramedics, as this gives a wider choice of career options. 3
4 14. Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) Applications have opened for this test. If you are in Year 12 and plan to apply for Medicine, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy/Commerce or Pharmacy at Monash University or for Oral Health (Therapy or Hygiene) at University of Melbourne you must sit the UMAT as part of the application process. Several interstate universities require the UMAT as well. Registration deadline: 5pm AEST Friday 4 June 2010; Test date: Wednesday 28 July See: for details. 15. Interested in Engineering?
