Kay Ball, RN, BSN, CNOR, MSA, FAAN, PH.D (C) Kay Ball is a perioperative nurse educator and consultant working with perioperative nurses, professional organizations, healthcare facilities, industry, and legislative groups. Kay has served as the Laser Program Director for Mount Carmel Health and Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. This course addresses these issues and presents methods of controlling hazards associated with laser use. Laser Safety Officer This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge required to perform the duties of a Laser Safety Officer as described in the American National Standards Z Safe Use of Lasers standard. Areas covered are lasers and optics, applications, laser bioeffects, laser hazards and hazard analysis, nonbeam hazards, and control measures. It also includes training on laser safety program development and administration. Laser Safety In The Lab This course is designed to offer solutions and cost effective options to anyone who is providing laser safety support in a research setting, academic, national laboratory, designated research facility or commercial firm. Topics included are program structure, control measures and non-beam hazards in a research setting, safety protocols, training options, and obtaining user co-operation. Industrial Laser Safety Audit This audit is designed to assist facilities to be in compliance with United States OSHA Workplace Safety Requirements (Public Law ) and ANSI Z136.1 Safe Use of Lasers standard. The audit includes hazard analysis, evaluation of the laser use area, area controls, a review of standard operating procedures, laser and laser system requirements, and training requirements for area personnel. Each company receives documentation including a written report of findings, recommendations, policies and procedures, recommendations on training, control measures, and personal protective equipment. Medical Hands On Skills Validation This in-service has a didactic presentation and hands on using your lasers. The format of this course meets the criteria set up by ANSI and ASLMS. Laser physics and safety will be discussed according to your specific wavelengths. Policies and procedures examples as well as modules and a validated skills checklist will be provided. The hands on will include demonstration with return demonstration on the various lasers. Medical Laser Safety Audit This audit is designed to assist medical facilities in becoming compliant with ANSI Z Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities standard and also help become compliant/prepared for JCAHO and OSHA inspections. The audit includes a review of all aspects of the facility s laser program, including medical staff credentials and competency, current laser policies and procedures, laser documentation, preventative maintenance procedures for laser equipment, training records, responsibilities of the area personnel, and composition of laser committee. Each facility receives a written report of findings, recommendations, guidelines for establishing competency checklists, sample policies and procedures, preventative maintenance guidelines and a skills validation checklist. 14 LIA is committed to keeping the workplace safe from hazards associated with lasers. On August 9, 2005 LIA formed an Alliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to help achieve these goals. On August 22, 2007 LIA and OSHA renewed this commitment and resigned the Alliance. OSHA and LIA recognize the value of establishing a collaborative relationship to foster safer and more healthful American workplaces. The Alliance will provide LIA s members and others, including small businesses with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees health and safety, particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to laser beam and non-beam hazards in industrial and medical workplaces. In addition, the organizations will focus on sharing information on laser regulations and standards, bioeffects lasers have on the eyes and skin, laser control measures and laser safety program administration. In developing this Alliance, OSHA and LIA recognize that OSHA s State Plan and Consultation Project partners are an integral part of the OSHA national effort. OSHA and LIA will work together to achieve the following training and education goal: Deliver or arrange for the delivery of laser related safety courses. OSHA and LIA will work together to achieve the following outreach and communication goals: Work with OSHA to provide expertise in developing information on the recognition and prevention of laser hazards in the workplace, and to provide expertise in developing ways of communicating such information (e.g. print and electronic media, electronic assistance tools and OSHA s and the LIA s Web site) to employers and employees in medical, industrial, military, research & development, and optical fiber communications industries. Speak, exhibit, or appear at OSHA s or LIA s conferences, local meetings, or other laser safety training events such as, LIA s International Laser Safety Conference. Share information among OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals regarding LIA s best practices or effective approaches and publicize results through outreach by LIA and through OSHA- or LIA-developed materials, training programs, workshops, seminars, and lectures (or any other applicable forum). Work with other Alliance participants on specific issues and projects on laser safety that are addressed and developed through the Alliance Program.
