1 AUGUST 11 and 12, 2015 ABOUT THE PROGRAM This two-day orientation program for Licensed School Nurses provides a framework for practice for baccalaureate-prepared nurses who are new to the school nurse role. Topics cover required and essential components of school health services in Minnesota elementary and secondary schools. Licensure as a School Nurse is provided by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Prerequisites include a bachelor s degree from a regionally accredited school of nursing, RN licensure and public health nursing certification, both from the Minnesota Board of Nursing. To obtain a School Nurse license, go to this website: MDE Educator Excellence > Licensing and use the online licensing system. Set up an account, log in and follow the instructions for First-Time Full Professional Minnesota Education License. School nurses use the same steps for licensure as teachers but have some exemptions such as not taking teacher skills tests. Describe nursing assessment and strategies for management of population-based and individual student education-related health needs such as children s episodic illnesses, chronic diseases, injuries and infectious disease control and prevention. Summarize the school nurse role in development of student individualized healthcare plans, emergency care plans, crisis response plans, individualized education program plans and 504 plans. Identify partnerships in schools and communities to which school nurses are key contributors public health team, school health team, wellness councils, student support services, All Hazard Planning, early childhood and the school nurse role in health teaching and counseling. This program is offered at low cost due to support from the sponsors: School Nurse Organization of Minnesota (SNOM), Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).
