1 APRIL 2016 Seventy Sixth Edition BISI COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER GUIDING STATEMENT OF THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ISTANBUL The British International School Istanbul provides a caring international environment, fostering cultural diversity. Individual students achieve their full academic potential, inspired to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens of the global community. YOUR COMMUNITY! YOUR NEWS! All photos can be found on our BISI Flickr Account: 1
2 Message from the Pre/Primary School As our Guiding Statements encourage, we are dedicated to educate students in a stimulating environment to the highest possible standards, we are committed to strive for continuous improvement and obtain accreditation from international organisations. To this end, the school undertook its second British Standards Overseas (BSO) inspection using the service provider School Inspection Service (SIS). This type of inspection will now occur every three years and demonstrates our commitment to continuous school improvement. The report will be published shortly. Before the Spring holiday, all the Key Stage 2 children participated in our Cross Country sporting event. The most successful runners were chosen to compete in the Istanbul Schools League (ISL) against other schools in Istanbul. Mr Huegel, Head of PE, and his team, organised the ISL Cross Country event in the Belgrade Forest. Our students performed exceptionally well: congratulations students! As our Guiding Statements inspire, we educate students to be respectful of, and knowledgeable about, and be involved in their local and international communities. The PTA asked families to send in stationery gifts for children in the local community as part of the Children s Day celebrations. These gifts were taken to our local council for them to distribute to the most needy. We appreciate your donations. Miss Tomoko and Mr. Pete have amplified our Creative Arts programme this year. In Zekeriyaköy, elected children from the Primary School demonstrated their talents at our Creative Arts assembly. In the City, a selection of Key Stage Two children demonstrated their talents during our Music assembly. The children performed outstandingly well and captivated their audience. Well done students! The Year 5 children zoomed off to Space Camp! After a short delay, the children were on their way to Izmir. Beth from Space Camp met them and they were shown to their rooms. They thoroughly enjoyed all the activities on offer at Space Camp; exploring gravity and building their own rockets! Many thanks to the Year 4/5 teachers for accompanying the children and looking after them so well. Finally, a date for your diaries! Our Fun Day is on Saturday 4 June this year. Please come to the Zekeriaykoy Campus and enjoy a day out with your children. There will be games and activities stalls, a wonderful stage set for our children to perform, bouncy castles, climbing walls and much more! We hope you enjoy this month s Newsletter. Best regards Amanda Ilhan Pre and Primary School Deputy Director Richard I Anson Pre and Primary School Director 2

6 Alkent Emirgan Park Trip As part of our Science and Geography work, all of Alkent Campus visited Emirgan Park. Not only did we admire the beautiful tulips, we studied different things. EYFS and Year 1 looked at all the different plants and changes in the trees during the different seasons. Year 2 looked for man-made and natural features throughout the park. It was a lovely sunny day and fun was had by all! Alison Guzel. 6
7 Etiler Year 3 Trip 3G in the rainforest at Florya Aquarium We ventured forth armed only with clipboards and Ahmed and Miss Filiz s cameras (ooh and some cookies). We saw plenty of fish (no surprises there) but Russian Sturgeons in the Maramara Sea? We raced past sharks and the Antarctic on our trek. Would we see piranhas, caiman, jaguars? It was wet and hot. We were welcomed by an anaconda and the fragrance of the capybara- pooh! The trees were huge and there were lots and lots of plants. Then we saw the red-bellied piranhas in the tank. Naturephotographer Ahmed snapped them quickly. The children drew and labelled and noted and looked and oohed and aahed, and finally posed for a class photo. The rainforest is very different from Istanbul, we decided. Carolyn Guven Year 3G Etiler. LOTS of plants! Listening to Miss Guven A Toucon Capybara Look at that! 7

15 Secondary Badminton at IICS 1st day back after the spring holiday was the Senior Badminton tournament, held at Istanbul International Community School, Hadimkoy. BISI had 4 girls and 4 boys entered for the competition, All students played singles, doubles and mixed doubles - so lots of badminton was played throughout the day, (with each game we scored more points, played better shots and learned more rules!) MIXED TEAMS Cenk Karabulut / Selin Cetin Enrico Sessia / Nadia Klomp Louis Dereboy / Emily Holdcroft Ashutosh Bhadouria / Olivia Alatan Well done to all. Sandra Scotland 15
16 Secondary ISL Volleyball at IICS On Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th April, our junior boys and girls volleyball teams competed in the ISL tournament at IICS. Despite improving tremendously over the course of the day, our boys finished in 4th place but this was after taking the top 3 teams to very close sets in all matches AND taking the 1st place team to very close third set. Our girls finished in 2nd place overall and narrowly missed the 1st place spot on a and defeat. Congratulations to both squads and the best of luck next year! Miss Bell & Miss Scotland 16

20 Secondary Year 7 Creative Arts Trip The students in Year 7 have just started a Music unit called Pictures at an Exhibition, linked to Mussorgsky s composition (1874) of the same name. They recently visited the Elgiz Museum of Modern Art in Maslak. They took instruments with them so that they could compose music while looking at works of art in the museum; they had the opportunity to sketch and write about what they saw and heard and how it made them feel during their performances and reflections. Lisa Mayer 20
21 Secondary Year 8 Creative Arts Trip After the inspiring trip last term to the Zero Exhibition, Year 8 visited the Sabancı Museum again; this time we visiting a solo exhibition, entitled MACK. Just Light and Colour. The German artist Heinz Mack is one of the founders of a mid-20th century avant-garde network known as the ZERO movement (the focus of last term s trip). The MACK. Just Light and Colour exhibition brings together paintings, sculptures and kinetic works from throughout the artist s long career. The students used the exhibition as a starting point for creative work. During the projects, the students will make visual art pieces (8S), musical compositions (8I), and drama (8B) based on what they saw and experienced at the exhibition. Lisa Mayer 21
