1 Dear Parents, It seems that it may be quite wet outside for the foreseeable future! The children will need to wear a coat with a hood so we can still go outside if the rain is not too heavy. In the colder weather it is really important that the children have appropriate clothing- all clothing needs to be clearly labelled, especially jumpers and cardigans! Remember, we also need outside PE clothes (jogging bottoms/warm top/hats/gloves/trainers). The Year 1 children s Show and Tell day is each Wednesday. We would love the children to bring in an object that they would like to talk to their friends about. The children have produced some brilliant homework- we are very impressed with their hard work. 2 Our topic is Emergency Services Literacy Numeracy PSHE Science R.E. Music P.E. Creative Curriculum (D and T, Art, History, Geography) We will be learning about writing recounts, writing instructions and also stories with familiar settings. We will be practising skills involving counting and calculating, securing number facts, understanding shape and handling data and measures. We will be thinking about what to do when someone upsets us, how to stay safe and how to look after our environment. We will be learning about the seasons and plants. We will be exploring the different parts of a plant and exploring what plants need to grow. We will be learning about special places and buildings. We will be exploring pulse and rhythm. We will be enjoying some fantastic playground games with Mr. Johnson. We will be making up our own dance. We will be learning about the emergency services, we will be having our own search and rescue for a teddy, we will learn how to call the emergency services and solve our own crime! We will be learning about emergency first aid and we will have plenty of practical experience putting on bandages! We will be celebrating Chinese New Year!

If you have any of these books at home the children could read them alongside their schoolbook. We are learning how to write letters and will be writing to one of the names authors. We are going to produce our own fact sheet about the topics we are learning. We will be working through the primary framework concentrating on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will learn how to set these out and solve words problems using the mental and written skills we have learnt. 8 Personal, Social and Emotional Development In this area we will be thinking about what to do when someone upsets us, how to stay safe and how to look after our environment. We will also be thinking about things that we would like to do independently at home and at school, for example, getting changed for PE independently at school and perhaps making our own beds at home!! We will be thinking about how we care for others and how other people care for us. Communication and Language We will be practising listening to others and to take turns when we speak. We will be responding to others and taking account of what they say. We will be playing circle time listening games and we will be using emergency services language in our role hospital. Physical Development We will continue to develop skills in using small equipment. We will be forming letters correctly when we are ready to, and we will have lots of opportunities to practise these skills in the different areas of the classroom. We will be developing skills in using small equipment, for example, throwing and catching balls and rolling hoops. We will also be creating our own dance!! Literacy In this area we will be looking at lots of emergency services stories! We will be thinking about events happening in order and we will be recounting this verbally, and also using the letters we know to begin writing. We will be working hard for form our letters correctly. Our topic is Emergency Services! Mathematics We will be doing lots of practical addition and subtraction activities and we will begin to record these as sums. We will be learning about shape; flat shapes and 3d shapes. We will be making patterns and ordering objects by height and, of course, we will sing lots and lots of number rhymes. Understanding the World We will be thinking about the seasons and about the changes that happens in nature through the year. We will be learning about plants and naming the different parts of a plant! Expressive Art and Design We will be having lots of fun painting and making collages and models with all the resources available to us! We will be playing in the hospital role play area and we will also use the emergency services role play equipment when we play outside. We will be singing lots of songs! R.E. In this area, we will be learning about special places and buildings.
