1 State University of New York
2 Welcome to FM At Fulton-Montgomery Community College, a campus of the State University of New York, we are committed to helping our students reach their educational goals. We do this by creating an informal but respectful relationship between students and teachers, a relationship that promotes both learning and personal adjustment to a new environment. Teaching and advising are our most important activities. We are a small institution, and each student will be treated as an individual. International students find this combination of advantages makes Fulton-Montgomery Community College a good place to start in the American system of higher education. About Fulton-Montgomery Fulton-Montgomery Community College is located on 195 acres in the foothills of the beautiful Adirondack Mountains between Albany and Utica, New York. FM is dedicated to providing students with a quality education in an environment that nurtures success. Students interested in becoming involved in campus activities and clubs are able to choose from over 30 on-campus clubs and organizations. Nearly 100 international students attend FM, representing 20 countries. We develop the academic foundation and self-confidence that foreign students need to pursue their studies in the United States. 6 The Transfer Concept: 4 Year Programs The transfer concept is a basic component of our system, and when you graduate, you have the possibility of pursuing a Bachelor s degree at an almost unlimited choice of institutions. Students have continued their studies at universities within New York State such as, for example: Binghamton University Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Syracuse University The State University of New York at Albany The State University of New York at Stony Brook Admission If the student intends to continue studies at the FM campus after ESL study, a single admission can be granted for the English Language Program and an academic degree or certificate program. Admission as a full-time student to an academic program is contingent on the successful completion of the ESL Program. The required internet based TOEFL score of 61 (or paper TOEFL equivalent of 500) is waived when the dual admission option is chosen and the ESL program is successfully completed. In addition, many students have continued their studies at colleges out of the state such as: Florida State University and the University of California at Berkley. 7 Vladimir Neykov Success began at FM - the story of Vladimir Neykov Vladimir Neykov is climbing the educational ladder with the dream of becoming a successful digital artist. And he took his first step at Fulton-Montgomery Community College. Vlad, as he likes to be called, came to Fulton-Montgomery Community College (FM) in the fall of 2001 after finishing high school in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. He had a passion for the creative arts but did not want to become the clichéd poor starving artist ; therefore, he saw college in his future. There is an organization back home that had sent students before me to FM, says Vlad. Lightheartedly, he continues, The College had a good reputation for not having any of the kids go missing on them. So it was a safe choice and safe comes in really handy when you try to convince your mother to send you to the other end of the globe! Also convincing to Vlad was the Multimedia major at FM. He felt that being able to earn money by doing something he loved was the perfect combination. Vladimir also felt that the size of the College was just right for someone entering the world of higher education. He said that his classes were big enough to meet new people but small enough for the professor to know who you are. And speaking of professors, there were a couple that stood out in Vladimir s mind as he states, I would like to specifically thank my English professor, Jake Holden, who was a great source of inspiration and support, always available to offer me his good advice. Also, my Multimedia teacher, Robert Renda, had this fun way of approaching his field. It made me realize that my career will also be my hobby.... Follow the link below to read my full profile:
8 Naomi Osawa International Student - Naomi Osawa Naomi Osawa grew up with her father, Seiichi, her mother, Fumie, and her younger sister, Miki in a town located in the prefecture of Gunma, Japan which is two hours north of Japan s capital, Tokyo. It was there that she attended Takasaki Girls High School and made the decision to come to FM. Knowing that I would be an international student, says Naomi, I thought it would be a good idea to attend a college relatively small in size as opposed to going to a big four-year university. That way I would be able to get used to the English-speaking environment and to American culture more easily. When Naomi arrived at the campus, she decided to major in Liberal Arts/General Studies. Even though I was determined to study either International Politics or International Relations at the undergraduate level, I chose to focus on General Studies at FM, says Naomi. I wanted to acquire knowledge on broader subjects and to familiarize myself with English words used in a variety of topics before I proceeded to a four-year university. Being an international student, Naomi felt the need to work harder to achieve her goals and she d like to credit certain faculty and staff who made a valuable impact on her life. While FM faculty and staff members are all very friendly and concerned about students, there are several individuals whom I d like to mention, states Naomi. In academic contexts, Mr. Kover and Dr. DiNitto helped me a lot by constantly encouraging me to work hard to achieve my goals. I loved their classes and I learned so much from them. In a nonacademic environment, faculty members such as Mrs. Spencer, Mrs. Doherty, and Mrs. Mason remain very important in my life. When I was feeling down or when I was feeling lost, all three were always there for me. I knew I could count on them for anything. We also had a lot of fun together, whether we went on a trip or attended a party! Without these five individuals, I don t think I would be where I am today.... 9 Do you want to study in the U.S. but may already have a college degree? Are you looking for a short-term study option to improve your English and employability? Fulton-Montgomery Community College, State University of New York has the right choice for you! The Short-Term Certificate Program offers options for students planning on studying for a short period of time. Students are in classes with US students, improve English Language skills, earn college credits, and earn an International Education Program Certificate of Completion in just one semester or 4 months. For those who prefer a longer study, an academic year (two semesters) option is also available. The student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits per semester. English placement will be determined by the Compass Placement Test. Students may also choose to audit college course work or elect to study the courses in a satisfactory/unsatisfactory grading option. Academic Advisement will assist the student with these decisions upon enrollment. Six short-term International Education Programs Certificates of Completion are currently offered.
