Basketball is available to any 7 th or 8 th grade boy who is academically eligible to participate. Students will have the fundamentals of dribbling, shooting, passing, and running offensive and defensive schemes introduced and reinforced throughout the season. We will compete in games and our season concludes the first week of February. Because of the distance traveled to away games, students will be responsible for making up any work that they missed that day. Any questions see Mr. Phillips in Room 306. Middle School Girls Basketball (Grades 7 and 8) Middle School girls' basketball is for any girl in 7th and 8th grade who is interested in being a part of a team that is preparing to play and compete at the high school level. The season starts at the very beginning of the school year and runs through October. Players will be taught the fundamentals of basketball including dribbling, passing and shooting. Practices and games are held after school Monday thru Thursday and on some Fridays. Players will be dismissed from school early on away game days and will be responsible for any work missed. The Brentwood School District requires all players to maintain a 2.0 GPA and not be failing more than one class in order to participate.
2 Middle School Girls Volleyball (Grades 7 and 8) Girls middle school volleyball consists of both a seventh and eighth grade team that compete during the months of February and March. Girls will learn the basics in passing, setting, hitting and serving through intensive drilling. Mandatory practices are held Monday through Friday from 3pm-5pm. The players must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA (cannot fail two or more classes) to be academically eligible. Work Hard, Play Hard! Middle School Track and Field (Grades 7 and 8) Throughout the history of Brentwood Track and Field, our teams have been respected across Western Pennsylvania. Once again, it is our goal to assemble a team that is built to compete with schools across the state. The foundation for this success starts for our athletes in the middle school. The middle school season starts the 3rd week of March and concludes during the first week in May. During this time, students will learn the basic fundamentals as they explore the many events that make up a track meet. The season consists of 4 to 5 meets. Our goal is to help athletes develop an interest for track and field and for them to give their best effort to be competitive throughout the season. Middle School Cheerleading (Grades 7 and 8) The middle school cheerleaders cheer at the BMS boys home basketball games and one away game as well as at any pep assemblies or faculty charity games. The boys basketball season runs from the end of November through the beginning of February. There are no tryouts and no prior cheerleading experience is necessary students are just asked to make a commitment to the team by attending all meetings, practices and games AND to always try their best! Failure to attend practices or to cooperate at practices may result in not being able to cheer at games. Also, each cheerleader must maintain a 2.0 GPA and be in school for at least 4 whole periods on the day of any practice or game in order to participate in that event. Finally, all cheerleaders must have a physical prior to the first practice. Each cheerleader will be issued a uniform for the season. They will also need a pair of white tennis shoes, short white socks and navy blue trunks to wear under their uniform.

National Junior Honor Society (Grades 6, 7, and 8) National Junior Honor Society is about more than just being on the honor roll or getting good grades. Membership in NJHS is open to sixth, seventh and eighth graders AND is based upon a student s outstanding performance in the following areas: *Scholarship BMS students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher after the 2 nd nine weeks. (no rounding up) *Service This quality is defined as voluntary contributions to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous and enthusiastic spirit. Each student MUST complete AT LEAST 15 SERVICE HOURS. NJHS members can complete individual service hours as well as participate in group service projects throughout the year such as visiting nursing homes and charity walks. *Leadership Student leaders are resourceful, dependable, positive, effective problem solvers and promoters of school activities. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. *Character Students of good character uphold principles of morality and ethics. These individuals are cooperative, honest, reliable, courteous and respectful. *Citizenship Students who demonstrate citizenship understand the importance of civic involvement, freedom, justice and democracy. They are often involved in school clubs, scouting and other community activities.
5 BMS Publishers (Grades 6, 7, and 8) BMS Publishers writes and publishes the BMS Press, our middle school newspaper. Students are encouraged in researching items of interest to middle school students as well as constructing puzzles, designing contests, and writing stories and poetry. Often they include articles which correspond to fund-raising activities in the middle school or a personal interest. All middle school students are encouraged to participate. Publishers meets twice a month, on the first and third Thursday, in the school library. Middle School Drama Club (Grades 6, 7, and 8) The Middle School Drama club members participate in activities related to Drama. We plan trips to various plays in the area as well. Participation in our activities has students up and moving as they learn to communicate more clearly and grow in courage and confidence. Middle School Student Council (Grades 6, 7, and 8) The Middle School Student Council is for any student in grades six, seven and eight who wants to develop leadership skills, foster community awareness, and participate in enhancing the school atmosphere and involvement through activities such as dances and fund-raising. Student members will be required to attend regular meetings after school, to participate in dance preparation, set-up, and clean-up, to behave appropriately as a responsible member, to be committed to the student council and to take on responsibilities as a student council member.
6 Teens that Care T.T.C (Grades 6, 7, and 8) T.T.C. (Teens That Care) is a Middle School club focusing on drug and alcohol prevention along with bringing awareness of the importance of doing community service projects. Our goal is to make Middle School students aware of the dangers of drugs and alcohol along with the rewards of doing community service projects and helping others. T.T.C. is responsible for planning Red Ribbon Week activities and contests, planning field trips to local nursing homes, and making crafts and cards for local nursing homes. Middle School Computer Club (Grades 6, 7, and 8) The Computer Club offers middle school students the opportunity to develop and practice new innovative computer skills using software programs like Autodesk Inventor, Photoshop, Master CAM, Virtual Wind Tunnel, Microsoft Power point and Word. The students will develop relationships with other peers while working within a group to compete in the F1 in Schools Challenge at the PA level. Students who maintain their membership within the Computer Club will be eligible to go to Pennsylvania state finals in March to compete against other middle school students from around Pennsylvania. Middle School Garden Club (Grades 6, 7, and 8) The Middle School Garden Club grows different types of plants, learns about plant care and identification, and takes care of the school gardens in conjunction with the High School Garden Club. The garden clubs are responsible for the cleaning of the school gardens in the fall and the planting of the gardens in the spring. The garden clubs also take several field trips to local state parks, nature reserves, and Phipps Conservatory for the flower shows. At the state parks, the garden clubs participate in tree and wildflower identification, sugar maple tapping, and historical programs relating to plants and plant care.
7 MIDDLE SCHOOL CHORUS (Grades 6, 7, and 8) Sixth grade chorus is designed for entry-level singers as well as those who have achieved elementary choral skills. Active participation will develop the voice to a level expected for admittance into seventh and eighth grade chorus. These are elective courses which will meet and rehearse on a regular basis as part of the student's daily schedule. There are evening performance requirements. The ensemble will perform at a holiday concert in mid-december and a spring concert toward the end of the year. Participation in the performances will be part of the class grade. There may be extra non-mandatory performances where all will be welcome to attend. Participation in chorus fulfills the requirements necessary to participate in the various sanctioned music festivals. Middle School Jazz Band (Grades 6, 7, and 8) The Middle School Jazz Band meets Wednesday mornings from January through April from 7:00 to 7:30 AM to learn fun pop/rock/jazz literature and performs at the Spring Concert on the first Tuesday of May each year. Instrumentalists must have prior experience on a select band instrument including, tenor and baritone saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass and drum set. Camp Kon-0-Kwee (Grade 6) Though "roughing it" doesn't quite describe life at Camp Kon-O-Kwee, students are offered the opportunity to go to camp for three days in May. As part of our 6th grade curriculum, students travel up 79 North to spend time attending "classes" outdoors as they explore such activities as archery, fishing, canoeing, wall climbing, crafting, tying, hiking, and an obstacle course. Students are given the opportunity to raise their own fees throughout the year during two hoagie sales. Brentwood teachers and staff members will be in charge of each cabin. Instruction will be provided by school personnel, augmented by professionals proficient in outdoor skills. The purpose of camp is to provide specific instruction and to stimulate and improve cooperation among students and teachers in the Brentwood Middle School. Camp Kon-O-Kwee is a great way to end the year as the students will form memories that will last forever.
8 Sixth Grade Band (Grade 6) The sixth grade band meets as a graded class three times per week scheduled during the school day. Students continue their instrumental music training on flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, Tuba, or drums in a full ensemble setting. Two public performances are scheduled in the evening. The winter concert is usually held the third Tuesday of December and the spring concert is the first Tuesday in May. Seventh and Eighth Grade Band (Grades 7 and 8) The combined seventh and eighth grade band meets as a graded class three times per week scheduled during the school day. Students continue their instrumental music training on flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba, or drums in a full ensemble setting. Two public performances are scheduled in the evening. The winter concert is usually held the third Tuesday of December, and the spring concert is the first Tuesday in May. Additionally, the seventh and eighth grade band performs with the high school marching band during the halftime show at one Brentwood Spartan football game. SPRING MUSICAL/CLASS PLAY Each spring, the middle school and high school present a musical theater production. Auditions for acting roles are usually held in November with rehearsals starting in December. The lead roles are usually filled by high school students while middle school students are used to fill ensemble roles; however, some productions require younger students. The elaborate productions require the help of many non-acting roles including stage crew and pit orchestra musicians. Past productions have included Grease, The Sound of Music, Peter Pan, Seussical, and Annie.
