For example, collecting food for the local pantry feeds people right now. Raising money to fund the American Heart Association or new books about nutritious eating at the local library helps in the near term. These acts of kindness are important ways to help some people right away. Take Action projects, along with the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards, address the root cause of an issue, and come up with sustainable, longer lasting solutions. These projects strive to make the world a better place for more people for a much longer time. We think childhood obesity and body image are two relevant issues worth exploring. Brownies (Grades 2 3) Fair Play: Playing fair means that everyone has the same chance to play, because everyone follows the same rules. That s what this badge is about. 2 Juniors (Grades 4 5) Healthy Living: Stay Fit You need a fit body and mind to do all your favorite things, from roller skating to writing in your diary to sharing advice with friends. Jump into this badge to figure out what fitness, food, and fun you need to stay strong for life. 1. Start moving! 2. Keep your fit body fueled 3. Know how to stress less 4. Get the truth about health 5. Help your family stay fit When I've earned this badge, I'll know what I need to get strong and stay that way. Juniors (Grades 4 5) Athlete: Practice with Purpose Even the best athletes weren t born great at sports: They had to practice with purpose. Have fun with these activities as you learn to improve a skill no matter what track, court, rink, pool, slope, or field you like to play on. Game on! 1. Decide on your goal 2. Increase your endurance 3. Build up your strength 4. Drill for skill 5. Practice, practice, practice! Cadettes (Grades 6 8) Athlete: Good Sportsmanship It s good to be an athlete, but the greatest athletes agree it s just as important to be a good sport. When you make good sportsmanship a habit in games and in life, others want to play with you, hang out with you, and generally live up to your example. So whether you re a dedicated athlete with a chosen sport or you just like to enjoy an occasional game among friends, this badge will help you have more fun on the field and off. 1. 3 Seniors (Grades 9 10) Athlete: Cross Training Whether you re a competitive athlete, new to exercise, or want to improve your skills in surfing, hiking, or even throwing a Frisbee, this badge will help you customize a cross training fitness program that s effective and, most important, fun! The idea of cross training is to incorporate a variety of cardio, strength, and conditioning exercises into a routine that trains your whole body. Ready? Grab your sweatband, and create a plan that s perfect for your body, mind, and goals. 1. Set your cross training goal 2. Start a stretching and flexibility program 3. Add a cardio element 4. Add a toning or strengthening element 5. Stay motivated to reach your goal When I've earned this badge, I'll have developed a great cross training routine that keeps my workouts interesting and fun. Ambassadors (Grades 11 12) Athlete: Coaching What does it take to motivate a team to accomplish its goals? The best coaches put their answers into action at every practice. In this badge, find your answers and share them! Coaching is an opportunity to share your love of a sport, demonstrate your athletic skills, and to inspire and empower athletes to realize their potential. 1. Begin to outline your coaching strategy 2. Conduct a first assessment 3. Design your coaching plan 4. Put your plan into action and revise it, if necessary 5. Decide what sports skills you want to gain, and have fun customizing your accomplishments when you make a badge that s a unique, personal reflection of all you can achieve! Examples of possible Make your own badges Trampoline Sports & Fitness badge: From dodgeball to basketball to aerobic exercise, trampoline fitness is low impact fun and fitness. Design several routines that incorporate one or more of these areas for variety and cross training, then record your results, such as heart rate and body mass, over multiple workouts over multiple weeks. Skylympics badge: Organize teams and events for a do it yourself Olympicstyle day. Host an amazing race of trampoline based activities and come up with an opening and closing ceremony. Action Photography or Digital Movie Maker: Bring your helmet camera and a friend, snap stills or video of free throws, mid air splits, flips and more. Use photo enhancing software to improve the
