My brother Tom played the and my friends sang a song for me. I know your birthday comes next month. I hope youll also have a nice birthday on 16th. Amitip Last winter I had a homestay in America. One day, I went to a restaurant with my host family. A waitress came to our table and she did everything we needed during our dinner, so we had a good time there. When we finished the dinner, my host father gave the waitress more money and he didnt receive the change. I was surprised. Then he said, In my country, we often give more money than the bill in a restaurant. This is called a tip. We also give a tip in a taxi and many other places. We do that to show our thanks to the people working there. I learned American culture during my stay. waitress bill Why was Ami surprised after the dinner? 5 Mio Jim Titles of Speeches JapaneseA Beautiful Language To Think of Other People My country I found in Japan Students High School Girl University Woman University Man Jim : What was the most interesting speech for you? Mio : Lets see... this one. The university student said, Japanese people have something wonderful to make the world better! Can you guess what it is? Jim : Is it technology? Mio : No. Its our kind heart for other people. In her speech, she lost her wallet at a station. But the next day, a Japanese man took it to the station and she got it again. Jim : What a kind man! Mio : I didnt think that was special, but some of the other students also talked about experiences like that in their speeches. They said, I was helped by some kind Japanese people. They were all impressed because they didnt have such an experience before they came to Japan. Jim : Well, I can understand. To be kind to other people is one of the best things about Japan. If we try to be like this and think of others, we can see a better change in the world. Mio : I agree. I think its necessary for us [ ] for making a better world. Jim : How were the other speeches? Mio : They were good because they gave me a chance to think about my own country. The students learned about their own countries here in Japan. I have to study much about my country, too. Jim : Well, learning about foreign cultures is also understanding our own culture better. Mio : I think so, too. technology this one [ ] to ask others where theyre from to talk to others in English to think how others feel to see others at a station so Some of the foreign students at the contest were helped by kind Japanese people when they something in Japan. From the speeches of the foreign students at the contest, Mio thinks she must study much about. 4
6 Daiki2015 South AfricaNicolainvention I found an interesting story about one invention on the Internet. That is Lumo Board. It was thought by Nicola, a high school girl in South Africa. She worked hard to solve a problem in her town. One day, Nicola saw a place in her town from a car when she went home. There were a lot of poor people who lived in small houses in the place. They didnt have enough clean water or electricity. Many houses didnt have any lights. The roads around them werent good. Then Nicola thought of rescue workers. She wondered, [ ]? Can the sick people get to a hospital before it is too late? Nicola began to study the poor peoples lives there. She and her friends asked some questions to the people. Nicolas team found that the people had to wait for rescue workers for a long time because it was difficult for the workers to find the houses in the dark places. Nicola thought, What do the people need? If rescue workers find the house easily, they will get to the house faster. Then she got an idea from a number which each house has. She thought, If the house has the number with a light on the door, rescue workers can see it well at night! Then she decided to use a board and glow-in-the-dark paint. Her idea was to write a house number on the board with it. That is Lumo Board. Nicolas team made mistakes many times, but they exchanged their ideas and supported each other. Finally they made the idea real when Nicola was seventeen years old. Nicolas team won the prize at a contest by Innovate South Africa ISA. It is a contest which collects great ideas from high school students to make their towns better. Since then, the ISA and Nicolas friends have helped Nicola to make Lumo Board better. Now she has a dream. She hopes that every house in all the poor places in South Africa will have a Lumo Board by Each community has its own problems. I learned that from Nicolas story. She found the problem in her town and talked about her idea to the people around her. Then she got their help for making Lumo Board. So I think its important for us to share our ideas to solve the problems. If we do that, we will get some answers for a better future. Nicola says, Young people need to have big dreams. They have the power to change the world. Lumo Board solve a problem electricity rescue workers board glow-in-the-dark paint won the prize Innovate South Africa community power 5
7 [ ] What is an interesting story on the Internet How can rescue workers go to the right house at night Why do many people in the place want to go to high school Which hospital should I go to first some questions Lumo Board If I try to solve them alone, maybe I can do only a little thing. But if I ask some people to do that together, I think we can do more. My community also has some problems now. that Many people in the poor places in her town lived without. lights friends problems roads Nicola was years old when she made Lumo Board with her friends Nicola wants to in South Africa in the future. live in a house in the poor placesee Lumo Boards at every house in all the poor places win the prize again try another invention for the people Daiki is interested in Nicolas invention for the Internet. Nicola and her friends wanted to know the lives of the young people in her town. Nicolas team didnt make any mistakes because they helped each other. Nicola has improved Lumo Board with her friends and the ISA. Nicola found a problem in her town but she didnt do anything to solve it. Nicola thinks its necessary for young people to have big dreams. 6
