Whether you are a trained professional, an amateur dramatics enthusiast or have a curious interest in all things theatre related, The Lir will have a course to suit your level of interest. From An Introduction to Acting to Using Stanislavski s System courses range in level and specialist areas. This booklet gives a sample of what is available but there are always more courses being added, so check The Lir s website for more details. 3 05 INTRODUCTION TO ACTING ONCE A WEEK FOR TEN WEEKS Have you ever dreamt of becoming an actor, want to hone your existing performance skills or explore your own imagination? If so, this course is for you. The Lir s new Introduction to Acting course is perfect for those who are both inquisitive about a future career in acting and those who simply want to challenge themselves by stretching their creative muscles. Led by some of The Lir s core teachers, this workshop-based evening course is taught over 10 weeks. Each two and a half hour session consists of a physical warm-up followed by a voice or movement/improvisation class and culminates with a 90 minute acting workshop. The course will cover key elements of actor training including Voice, Movement and Improvisation, but will also introduce participants to classical and contemporary play texts, using both scenes and monologues to hone your craft. These workshops act as both a taste of drama school training and as a broad and basic introduction to the craft of acting. Introduction to Acting is aimed at people of all ages outside of the professional theatre industry. No previous experience is required, although those with amateur or student acting experience would also benefit from the course. Duration One evening per week for ten weeks Dates Thursdays 4th April 6th June Thursdays 27th June 29th August Thursdays 12th September 14th November Time 7.00pm 9.30pm Price 390 MOVEMENT EXPRESSION FOR Actors : PATTERNS AND PATHWAYS ONCE A WEEK FOR FOUR WEEKS This workshop focuses on the relationships that happen within and between bodies in space. Exercises will explore the dynamics of inner life of the body, how we move and are moved in our thoughts and feelings. How does this impact the movement between us - personal space, greeting and leaving, breath, dynamics in motion, advancing and retreating, closing and opening? Participants will become aware of affinities in movement, habits and patterns as they move and feel and how this influences shape, colour, quality and textures of their movement. Duration One day a week for four weeks Dates Thursday 7th, 14th, 21st & 28th March Thursday 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd May Thursday 13th, 21st, 27th June & 5th July Time 11.15am-1.15pm Price 80 for the course THE CLEAR AND CONFIDENT VOICE ONE DAY This workshop is geared for anyone who uses their voice at work (Barristers, Teachers, Broadcasters, those who give presentations etc.) or for anyone who is interested in improving their voice. It will offer: clarity of thought and speech, greater physical and vocal presence, better breath support, tools to strengthen your voice, ways to increase the range and carrying power of your voice, guidelines on how to keep your voice healthy and a greater sense of confidence when using your voice. 4 THE NATIONAL ACADEMY ACADEMY OF DRAMATIC OF DRAMATIC ART ART 07 7 USING STANISLAVSKI S SYSTEM Spring RADA SHAKESPEARE CERTIFICATES EXAM As the only centre in Ireland to host the RADA Shakespeare certificates, The Lir offers public certificate examinations throughout the year. These certificates are for everyone with a passion for drama and exploring the English language, and for those who appreciate the sheer enjoyment of performance. The Certificate is offered through a series of examinations on an Individual or Duologue basis at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels. Entry to each level of examination is dependent upon candidates having passed the previous level. Candidates must be at least 14 years of age. YOUNG ACTORS PROGRAMME TWO WEEKS The Lir Young Actors Programme is designed to give young performers a taste of what it is like to study at conservatoire level. The course is designed for young people with a passionate interest in performing, who may be thinking of applying to The Lir or a similar drama academy or have an interest in theatre and would like to explore the craft further. The programme introduces young performers to the reality of intensive training, replicating two weeks in the life of a full-time acting degree. The course will also provide an introduction to the skills required to become a professional actor. Classes focus on the core modules of Acting, Voice and Movement and are led by The Lir s core teaching staff. The course also prepares students intending to audition for drama schools covering audition technique, and the choice and delivery of audition monologues. Duration Two weeks Dates Ages Price 950 Spring Spring Sunday 24th March - Friday 5th April Monday 15th Friday 26th July FOUR DAYS This four day course will introduce participants to Stanislavski s System which is at the core of almost all actor training throughout the world. Specifically it will look at four areas of his systemthe actor s work on his/her body, on character, on the text and on being on stage. A range of selected contemporary and classical monologues and scenes are used to give actors a practical experience of the system. Actors will learn the principles of Naivety, Concentration, Relaxation, Sense, Memory and Communion, the Method of Physical Actions, Actions, Beats, Uniting and Objectives. The workshop will end with a presentation of the work. This course is ideal for participants who want to challenge themselves in all aspects of their stage craft and learn, through active analysis, about the Father of Actor Training in the Western world. 5 09 YOUNG ACTORS PROGRAMME FOUR WEEKS This four-week, extended course, includes all the elements of the two-week programme but also includes a particular focus on Musical Theatre. The course also combines individual singing and voice classes with more in-depth audition preparation and a presentation to friends and family at the end of the programme. The programme introduces young performers to the reality of intensive training, replicating four weeks in the life of a full-time acting degree. The course will also provide an introduction to the skills required to become a professional performer. Group classes focus on the core modules of Acting, Voice and Movement and are led by The Lir s core teaching staff. Individual voice, singing and monologue classes supplement the four week programme. The course also prepares students intending to audition for drama schools covering audition technique and the choice and delivery of audition monologues and songs. Duration Four weeks Dates Monday 22nd July Friday 16th August 2013 Time 10.00am 5.00pm Ages Price 2,250 MASTERCLASS WITH VISITING INTERNATIONAL TEACHERS CLOWN FOR ACTORS WORKSHOP ONE WEEK Matt Chapman is a Performer, Director, and Teacher of physical theatre and Clown. He is currently on the faculty at Dell Arte International in Blue Lake, California and he is also the Artistic Director of the Brooklyn-based ensemble Under the Table. Suzanne Bakker is a Dutch Actress and Teacher who teaches and tours internationally with various Dutch theatre companies. She specializes in comic acting and teaches Clown in the Modern Theatre Dance Department of the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Join Matt and Suzanne for this five day immersion into the world and play of the Clown, the eccentric character, the most real thing on the stage. In five days participants will investigate hugely what it means to be truly present on stage and to submit fully to what is, by jumping into the abyss head-first! The milieu of the Clown is failure, but the mode of the Clown is delight. The Clown is funny. Matt and Suzanne will explore Availability, Responsiveness, Comic Rhythms, Physicality, Partnering Skills, the Mask of the Clown and more, driving towards a personal awareness in each student of the nature of their own sense of comic play and weirdness. Duration Five days Dates Monday 15th July - Friday 19th July Time 10.00am 5.00pm Ages 18+ Price 350 ACTING AND IRISH THEATRE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS FOUR WEEKS Acting and Irish Theatre is a course for international students who wish to expand, explore and deepen their awareness of Irish Theatre. The course draws on the central aspects of The Lir s core teaching, focussing particularly on twentieth and twenty-first century Irish plays and playwrights. The course is aimed at professional actors or those who are undertaking serious training elsewhere and are about to set out on a professional acting career. Participants on the course will engage with some of the greatest plays in the history of the English language written by some of Ireland s leading writers including J.M. Synge, Sean O Casey, Samuel Beckett, Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Conor McPearson, Martin McDonagh, Marina Carr and Enda Walsh. Acting, Voice and Movement classes will focus on the unique demands of performing Irish plays. Voice classes will focus on the particular requirements of Irish texts including a wide range of Irish contemporary and historic dialects. The actor will explore the notion of body and movement in Irish play texts through different periods of history in relation to culture, clothing, dance, beliefs and superstitions, urban and rural environments, physical embodiment of work, past-time and muscularity of text. A further class will explore the production and performance history of some of the most iconic plays in the Irish repertoire. 6 11 PERFORMING SHAKESPEARE ONE WEEK This intensive week-long course investigates Shakespeare from an actor s point of view. Led by some of The Lir s core teachers including Hilary Wood, who also leads Shakespeare acting classes at RADA (international advisors to the Lir), the course combines rehearsal of text with intensive classes in Acting Technique, Speech, Voice and Movement; all designed to build the performers facility with Shakespeare in performance. The course is designed to cater for performers of all ages and at all levels of experience including seasoned professionals, those who may be contemplating full-time drama training and people who simply wish to explore an interest in the craft. Duration One week Dates Monday 29th July Friday 2nd August Time 9.00am 6.00pm Ages 18+ Price 590 AUDITION WORKSHOP Winter ONE DAY At this workshop, David Horan, one of the core acting teachers at The Lir, will guide participants through preparing for auditions, through careful selection of monologues and developing characterisation. This workshop will be extremely useful for those preparing for The Lir auditions and/or any other drama school participants may be applying to. Duration One day Dates Saturday 23rd & 30th November Saturday 7th, 14th & 21st December Time 10.00am pm Price 60 AUDITION MASTERCLASS Winter FOUR DAYS An intense course for those who are considering auditioning for drama school and want to prepare and hone their audition technique. The course will offer a range of workshops giving an invaluable grounding in vital skills required for auditions and ongoing training. On completing the course participants will be armed for auditions with a polished classical and contemporary speech, as well as tips and techniques to remain relaxed and confident in audition situations. General audition presentation, delivery, attitude and focus will be covered and the course will end with a mock audition session for drama school to practice the skills learned during the course. Experience in acting whilst not a necessity would be beneficial. Participants need to be committed to a career in acting. Fluency in English is essential. 7 13 THE TUTORS Cathal Quinn, Voice and Speech Tutor Hilary Wood, Senior Acting Tutor Gavin O Donoghue, Voice and Dialect Tutor April Pierrot, Alexander Technique Cathal has a Masters in Voice Studies from Central School of Speech and Drama. He taught at Oxford School of Drama and has been Head of Voice at the Gaiety School of Acting since 1998 before coming to The Lir. Hilary is a graduate of the RADA, where she held the Queen Elizabeth Coronation Scholarship. She was Senior Lecturer in Acting at the Webber Douglas School of Dramatic Art from 1985 until She is the London Director of the Georgian International Theatre Festival, an Associate Director of the Tumanishvili State Theatre, Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia, and Senior Lecturer in Acting on Fordham University New York s London program. Gavin is a graduate of The Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College Dublin and The Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He has worked as an Actor in the Theatre and on Radio in the UK before studying for his MA in Voice Studies at Central School of Speech and Drama. Since graduating from Central, Gavin has worked as a Voice and Dialect Coach. April Pierrot, MSTAT (Member of the Society of Teacher of Alexander Technique) has been a senior tutor in Alexander Technique at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) since Born in Montreal, Quebec, April qualified as a Five Element Shiatsu therapist with the Irish School of Shiatsu in Dublin in 2001 and as a Yoga Trainer in Bryan Burroughs, Movement & Physical Theatre Bryan trained as an actor at the Samuel Beckett Theatre in Trinity College Dublin graduating in 1999 with a particular interest in Physical Theatre. Bryan has taught Movement and Co-directed shows at Trinity College Dublin, NYU / Tisch Dublin School of the Arts and at the Accademia dell Arte in Arezzo, Italy. David Horan, Acting Technique Tutor A graduate from the Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College Dublin and Ecole Internationale de Theatre, Jacques Lecoq, David has experience in screen writing, directing and teaching. Gavin Kostick, Dramaturgy Tutor Gavin Kostick has written over twenty plays for a wide range of companies, which have been produced in Dublin and have toured internationally. Gavin has provided dramaturgical support for dozens of theatrical productions throughout Ireland and he is also the Literary Manager for Fishamble: The New Play Company. Paul Meade, Classical Text Tutor Paul Meade is a Writer, Director, Actor and Artistic Director of Gúna Nua Theatre. Paul trained at the Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College, and later received an M.A. in Modern Drama from U.C.D. He is currently artist in residence at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght. Sue Mythen, Movement Tutor Sue worked as an Actor and physical performer for over fifteen years prior to completing an MA in Movement at Central School of Speech & Drama, London. Since then she has worked as a freelance Movement Director for several companies in Europe, Canada and UK. Cathal Synnott, Singing Between 1989 and 2005 Cathal was a Coach and Repetiteur at Veronica Dunne s Opera Studio at the Leinster School of Music in Dublin. He also has extensive experience coaching actors and singers in musical theatre productions. Cathal was Musical Director of Riverdance on Broadway and on tour. He has been a regular member of the RTE Chamber Choir (subsequently the National Chamber Choir), performing a wide range of repertoire on radio, television and at concerts.

8 15 THE FACILITIES STUDIO ONE, 17m x 10m A fully flexible black box studio seating approximately 150. This fully equipped space can be configured to suit the needs of the performance. Stage Management and Technical Theatre students can be available to assist with stage design, production and management depending on their availability STUDIO TWO, 8m x 12m This black box studio with seating for approximately 70, can also be divided into two teaching rooms. Studio two is ideal for small scale productions or intimate creative performances. THE LIR CAFE/WINE BAR This fully functional wine bar and cafe is located in the main foyer of The Lir. With seating for approximately 60 and standing room for 140 this area acts as a feeder area for both studios. DANCE STUDIO, 8m x 9m With a mirrored wall and sports floor, this space is ideal for dance and movement rehearsals. REHEARSAL STUDIO, 8m x 7m This rehearsal space can also be divided into two teaching rooms.
