3 MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVE SELECTION YEAR 8 - SEMESTER ONE, 2016 As part of the Year 8 Curriculum, students have the opportunity to study additional elective subjects designed to provide choice and challenge for our students. The elective subjects can be from various Key Learning Areas including The Arts, Technology, Physical Education, Outdoor Education, Health, Languages Other Than English, Business, Science or English. Elective subjects are studied once a week for a double lesson. The electives are organised into elective blocks and students must select one elective in each of the three Year 8 elective blocks. Students in Year 8 therefore study three electives a week for Terms 1 and 2, Semester 1. Some electives may have prerequisite requirements. Others may incur a levy to offset the cost of this program. Some electives are for students commencing their study in this area, whilst others are offered at advanced level. Details of the electives offered during Semester 1, including a short descriptor for each elective, are included in this document. Year 8 students need to select three electives for Semester 1. 4 ART: VISUAL Students electing to participate in Visual Arts will explore a range of media including pencil, paints, collage and printmaking. Essential Visual Arts skills will be developed through creative and fun projects. No previous Art experience needed. BUSINESS STUDIES The Business Studies elective provides students with an opportunity to run their own small business within the school environment as well as delve into the exciting world of share trading. Students learn about vital aspects of business planning and marketing and apply this knowledge as they compete against their classmates during a Small Business Day event held during lunchtime at school. Students are also introduced to the world of share trading as they are challenged to select and maintain a portfolio of shares using notional money and real share prices from the S&P ASX-50. In doing this, students will have the opportunity to learn about public companies, what shares are, why they are traded, information interpretation, as well as some basic methods of valuing a company s shares. DANCE - Advanced The Dance Elective is designed to meet the Australian Arts Curriculum outcomes of making and responding to art through dance. Students will develop and apply understanding of the processes of dance composition for choreography using a range of dance elements, genres, styles, techniques, conventions and practices. The Advanced elective offers a more committed focus to prepare students for Senior dance studies by following similar assessment requirements and grading criteria. DANCE - Developing The Dance Elective is designed to meet the Australian Arts Curriculum outcomes of making and responding to art through dance. Students will develop and apply understanding of the processes of dance composition for choreography using a range of dance elements, genres, styles, techniques, conventions and practices. The Developing elective offers more of a focus of participation and exploring dance as an art form. Assessment requirements will not be as prescriptive as in Advanced Dance elective. Students may or may not have aspirations to study Senior dance. Course tasks for both Advanced and Developing Elective classes: Technique: Students will learn contemporary style dance techniques during classes that will be structured into small exercises performed to set music. Development of technical skill will be assessed in a technique exam. P a g e 4

5 Composition: The elements of dance composition and basic choreographic devices are taught, allowing students to compose their own creative dance sequences in small groups. Performance: Students learn a set choreographed dance during classes and are required to rehearse and memorise this choreography in preparation for performance. Students participate in performances to demonstrate their learnt skills and develop confidence, stage art skills, performance ethics and presentation style. Appreciation and Analysis Portfolio: Students will develop and apply understanding of the processes of dance composition for choreography using a range of dance elements, genres, styles, techniques, conventions and practices. They will use the language of dance to analyse and respond critically to dance works through the construction of a folio of worksheets and tasks. DRAMA In Year 8 Drama, students follow a program based on the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework strands Creating Arts Ideas, Arts Skills and Processes, Arts Responses and Analysis and Arts in Context. During this course, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience of dramatic forms. The Art of Puppetry Students study the history and origins of different types of puppetry. They then design and construct their own puppets, explore the use of their voice to create character and devise scenes for their own Puppet Theatre. From Page to Stage Our focus for this unit is scripted performance. Students study contemporary Australian plays and generate creative and imaginative solutions to the challenge of staging theatrical works. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: DIGITAL MEDIA The purpose of this elective is to introduce Year 8 students to digital media design and animation software with an aim to produce a multimedia short. Students examine and apply various aspects of a digital media design process including storyboarding, character and prop design, animation, audio design and video editing. Students participate in activities that require the use of the Adobe Creative Suite. Students are required to produce a short animated video. P a g e 5

6 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: APP DEVELOPMENT The purpose of this elective is to introduce Year 8 students to software programming with the aim of producing apps for mobile devices. Students examine and apply various aspects of lua programming. Students participate in activities that require the use of the Corona Software Developer Kit. Students are required to produce a number of games and apps for a variety of purposes. JAPANESE LANGUAGE Experience the highlights of Japanese culture and language in this exciting course. Students will continue to develop fluency in Japanese reading, writing, listening, and speaking at the same time as trying their hand at calligraphy, doing film studies, making videos and establishing contact with students at our sister school, Tamagawa University School. Students will have access to the online vocabulary learning tool GoVocab to aid vocabulary learning. They will learn to actively communicate in Japanese and will have priority in selection on the Tokyo Study Tour. Students work towards the Band 2 Outcomes in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework Languages Area. MATERIALS TECHNOLOGY: Wood, Plastic (Introductory) This course is designed to suit students with little or no experience Materials Technology. Once students have reviewed safety requirements in the workshop, they produce a series of projects designed to give them experience in working with acrylic and timber and their associated tools, machines and processes. Students construct set skills projects (chopping board, moulded acrylic bowl) and design projects. Examples of projects may include a wooden box with a fitted lid, sign carving, money box, puzzles, acrylic key tag, trinket box. A materials fee of $50 applies for the semester. MEDIA STUDIES Radio Broadcasting Students develop an understanding of radio production and broadcasting. Learning activities include analysing commercial radio segments and scripting, voicing and producing their own segments. Students will produce a program which will be broadcast each afternoon on Darwin FM. MEDIA STUDIES TV Broadcasting Students develop an understanding of television production and broadcasting. Learning activities include scripting, filming and editing techniques. Students will use green screen technology and editing software to produce their own television programming segments. P a g e 6

7 MUSIC Students develop their understanding of music theory concepts. Over the semester, students take part in learning instrumental skills, whereby students demonstrate a sequence of skills related to their choice of instruments in solo performance. The students are also assessed on their ensemble skills and sit a final examination paper at the end of the semester. OUTDOOR EDUCATION This course is designed in part from the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework Health and Physical Education Participation in Physical Activity and Movement strand. Outdoor Education includes both theoretical and practical components. The major areas of focus for the semester include rock-climbing, archery, canoeing and orienteering. Before practical lessons, students learn the theory and history of each activity. All activities include elements of skill development, team work and cooperation. Students are encouraged to be organised, independent learners and demonstrate a willingness to try new activities. PHYSICAL EDUCATION EXTENSION The course is designed in part from the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework Participation in Physical Activity and Movement strand. Physical Education Extension includes fitness testing and students learning about correct warm ups, exercise techniques and cool downs. This is followed by fitness sessions conducted at Fitness Works Gym. These sessions focus on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, balance and persistence. STEM EXTENSION: SCIENCE IN THE WORLD In this elective students get the opportunity to expand on their practical Science skills to plan and carry out a range of laboratory experiments. Students are able to explore their areas of interest to develop hypotheses, viable practical experiments and research skills Other Electives may be available early in Term 1. P a g e 7
