Spivey Hall s Summer Music Camp is designed for both boys and girls who will be in 4 th 7 th grade in the school year. Participation is not limited to previous choral experience; however, students need to be able to sing on pitch (in tune) before camp begins. Music teacher recommendations are required. What if my Child Has Never Sung in a Choir? Don t worry if your child doesn t have choral music experience (or any musical experience)! Participants simply need to be able to match pitch when they sing. If your child enjoys keeping a beat, Spivey Hall s Summer Music Camp will offer him/her a wonderful well-rounded introduction to the marvels of musicmaking. What Will Participants Do at Camp? This five-day camp will create a community of young people who enjoy singing with others and want to become better singers and musicians. Students will work with members of the Spivey Hall Children s Choir Program staff to develop correct vocal technique, choral musicianship, ensemble singing, and more. The Spivey Hall Summer Music Camp emphasizes total musical development through a broad range of activities. Students will participate in chorus, a percussion ensemble, play tone chimes, engage in several folk dances, participate in a piano lab, class guitar, drama, and other creative musical activities. Large and small group rehearsals will be conducted throughout the week, culminating in a free public concert on Friday afternoon, showcasing the campers talents. Students also have the opportunity to prepare a vocal or instrumental solo and receive one-on-one coaching during the week. See the Solo Performance Opportunity form for more information. Where Will Camp be Held? Summer Music Camp will be located primarily at Spivey Hall, on the campus of Clayton State University. Activities may also take place in surrounding campus buildings. Go to and click Directions for a map. All participants will check in and out from Spivey Hall each day of Camp.
4 When Should I Drop-Off/Pick-Up my Child? Camp begins at 9:00 AM and doors to Spivey Hall will not open until 8:30 AM. To ensure their safety, please do not drop off children before 8:30 AM. Camp will conclude each day at 3:00 PM. Please pick up your children as close to 3:00 as possible. Children not picked up by 3:30PM will be subject to dismissal from Camp with no refund of registration fees. What Should my Child Take to Camp? Participants should come to camp with a lunch, beverage, and positive attitude each day. Spivey Hall will provide music, instruments, and t-shirts for participants; students will wear the t-shirts at Friday s concert. Is There a Dress Code? Participants should dress comfortably while abiding by their school s dress code; however, they need to wear shoes with backs. (No flip flops, please.) Tank tops, pajamas, and clothes with offensive language or pictures are not permitted in Spivey Hall. Please note that the temperature in Spivey Hall is quite cool and participants will usually eat lunch outside. Therefore, please send your child to Camp with a sweater or sweatshirt each day so that s/he may be comfortable. When is the Concert? Participants of the Spivey Hall 2015 Summer Music Camp will give a free demonstration concert in Spivey Hall on Friday, June 12 at 2:30 PM to showcase their talents. All families and friends are welcome to attend. No tickets are required, and seating will be general admission. Students will need to wear jeans, closed-toed shoes, and their camp t-shirt at the concert. A reception will take place after the concert for families, participants, Camp staff and volunteers. Spivey Hall will provide beverages; we ask that each participant s family provide one finger-food dessert item (such as cookies or brownies no cake, pies, or puddings that require utensils) for the reception. Please drop off desserts Friday morning with your child. What are Solo Opportunities? Interested students may also bring a prepared vocal or piano solo to receive professional coaching sessions. Student will work with a professional musician on musicality and performance skills during the week. Pitch, rhythms and/or text will not be taught during coaching sessions. Students must be able to perform the piece before they come to camp. Students will be selected on a first come-first served, spaceavailable basis. There will be a $10 charge for participating in this opportunity no refunds. Recital: Students will have the opportunity to perform in Spivey Hall for their peers. A small number of students will be selected to perform during the Friday afternoon demonstration concert. Solo Opportunity Registration is part of the online registration process. Piano Guidelines: A selection from the classical, folksong, or art song repertoire is highly recommended. A selection from the student s method book is appropriate. Students must bring music with them each day to camp. This is limited to piano only. Vocal Guidelines: Once students have registered, parents will be sent a link to a website. Students will be assigned a song and must go to the website to learn it. Students should be able to sing the song and have the text memorized before camp begins. Refunds will not be given to unprepared students.
5 What are the Expectations for Behavior and Health? Participants are expected to exhibit kind, responsible behavior during camp. Spivey Hall reserves the right to dismiss any child from Camp for disruptive behavior, and the parent/guardian is responsible for picking up the child from Camp, with no refund, in the event that such a dismissal occurs. Participants are also expected to be in good health at Camp, with current vaccines. Spivey Hall is fully wheel-chair accessible; individuals requiring disability-related accommodations may contact Clayton State University s Disability Resource Center at (678) How Much Does it Cost? The cost to attend Summer Music Camp is $160 per student, due in full before the registration deadline of Monday, June 1. Register before April 15 and receive the early bird rate of $135! Current and new members of the Spivey Hall Children s Choir program can register for a reduced rate of $135 through May 1. Register multiple students and receive a 20% discount on each additional child! After June 1, a late fee of $25 per student will be added to the camp registration fees. Acceptance is not guaranteed and will be considered on a space-available basis. Students wishing to take advantage of the solo performance opportunity will add $10 to their registration to cover the cost of materials and instruction time. When you are ready to register go to and click on Purchase Tickets and choose Spivey Hall Summer Music Camp. Complete your registration. You'll be sent an acknowledgement within 24 business hours along with a packet of electronic forms. The teacher recommendation and these forms must be submitted to the Spivey Hall Education Department before your camp registration can be confirmed. For more information contact MelanieDarby@clayton.edu. If, for any reason, Spivey Hall cancels the camp, participants will receive a full refund. If participants cancel their registration before the June 2 deadline, they too will receive a full refund. If, for any reason, participants cancel their registration after the deadline of June 2, no refund is possible.
