Kingsdale Foundation School Sixth Form Year 12 and 13 Enrichment Programme
2
Introduction What is enrichment? As well as supporting students to achieve academically, Kingsdale s sixth form also assists students to become well rounded young people through a carefully structured programme of enrichment activities. Participation in these activities is not only enjoyable and rewarding, it can also assist students with applications to higher and further education in an increasingly competitive world. Many of the activities take place on a Wednesday afternoon, although many of them operate at times throughout the week and students are encouraged to ensure that the activities they select cover the three main areas of: Work related learning Community participation Personal development Students select their enrichment activities on a termly basis and their participation and achievements are reviewed by the pastoral term at the end of each term. Students who are enrolled onto Baccalaureate pathway, are required to record their enrichment activities electronically on a weekly basis so that these experiences can ultimately contribute towards their accreditation. Students on the Advanced and Transition pathways are required to keep a written journal of their participation which will be reviewed by their tutor termly. Below, you will find details of each activity offered during this academic year. All general questions concerning enrichment should be directed to the Heads of Learning for Year 12 and 13, Mr. Kearns, Mr Massey and Mr Grogono. Specific questions relating to the actual activities offered should be directed in the first instance to the lead member of staff listed below. 3
Name of activity: The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Time and venue: Wednesday afternoons in 6CR Lead member of staff : Mr Grogono The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme allows young people to plan and undertake their own programme of activities in order to develop mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Expeditions are run to various areas throughout the UK including the Lake District, Snowdonia and Dartmoor, through which students learn camping, map reading and essential first aid skills. The award also tests involvement in community service, the development of a chosen skill and sustained physical activity. Unlike other activities this is very much a personal experience for students and an opportunity to undertake a personal challenge with a tailor made programme. Name of activity: Helpline Community Volunteering with Dulwich Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon (further weekly opportunities available on request) Lead member of staff: Mr. Sear/Mr. Kearns The Dulwich Helpline is a local community based charity established in 1993 to provide friendship and practical support for isolated older people in the Dulwich area. They offer a range of friendly support services which include various local meetings and groups such as poetry, reminiscence, art appreciation, music, books, singing and computers. Students who participate in this activity will have a chance to meet and support local older people in the Wednesday afternoon reminiscence group. Please note that you may be required to complete a CRB vetting form prior to commencing this activity. 4
Name of activity: Debating Society Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in 6M3 Lead members of staff: Mr. Massey The Debating Society is an activity for students who enjoy discussing and debating key issues of interest in their lives and in wider society. Students meet once a week to formally debate a topic presented the week before and to hone their debating skills. This activity is particular useful for developing confidence in public speaking and for students who may be interested in entering careers where they need to think on their feet! The Debating Society also represents the school in the Southwark Debating Championships which take place five times a year to debate topical issues, as well as in competitions with local independent schools. Name of activity: Ceramics Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in AR1 Lead members of staff: Ms. Farley This activity is open to all students and offers the opportunity to experiment with clay to create interesting and unusual ceramics which are fired in the school s kiln. Traditional techniques of hand building, such as pinching, soft slab, hard slab and coil construction are used, as well as slip casting. Ceramics will be glazed before being fired in the kiln. This activity offers progression into higher education by providing useful experiences for those considering A-Level Art & Design courses or future Foundation level courses in Art & Design. 5
Name of activity: Drama Club Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in DR1 Drama Club is open to all students and involves participation in drama games, activities, productions, improvisation and script work. Whatever you intend to do in life, being able to talk and present yourself well is a skill everyone needs. We all act out different 'parts' in different situations every day. Participation in this activity can help students become more free in talking to people, dealing with a range of experiences and thinking spontaneously. If you are already involved in Drama you can be a leader in these sessions and, if you are not, you will get the chance to express yourself and explore situations without having to do so in front of an audience - unless you want to! You will also be able to give a presentation on a topic that interests you and watch yourself back on video! You may discover you have second career as a stand-up comic - who knows! Each half-term will also include a visit to an Arts venue or Theatre show. Name of activity: Sixth Form Orchestra Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in the Music School Lead members of staff: Mrs. Graham and Music Staff Kingsdale is renowned for excellence in Music and this popular activity is open to all students who can play and perform on traditional orchestral instruments. Auditions for the Orchestra will be held at the start of each term and rehearsals take place in our amazing Performance Hall facility and accompanying practice rooms. Students will perform in a range of concerts throughout the year at local, national and international venues. In recent years, these have included the South Bank and concert tours abroad. 6
Name of activity: Music Recording and Performance Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in MS2 Lead members of staff: Mr. Thomas This activity enables students with an interest in the music industry and recording to learn important skills in this area. Based in our state-of-the-art recording studio in the new Music School, students will be able to learn to use a range of media and to record digitally and in analogue form. Students will also be able to assist in the recording of our musical events throughout the year and also in recording their own performance. Name of activity: Music ensembles Time and venue: Throughout the week in the New Music School as specified below Lead members of staff: Mrs. Graham Kingsdale is proud to offer an amazing range of musical ensembles for which students can audition. 10 Name of activity: Sailing Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon at the Ahoy Centre Lead member of staff: Mr. Grogono Sailing is a popular enrichment activity that encourages students to develop new skills and work as a team. Participants will learn to control a sailing dinghy on the Thames, and experience the thrill of harnessing the wind! There will be the opportunity to develop qualifications in sailing, and to join the sailing club if the sailing bug bites you. If you are looking for an exciting challenge, then this is the activity for you! Please see Mr. Grogono for more information. Name of activity: First Aid Time and venue: 12 weeks based in the Sixth Form Centre This 12 week enrichment activity is ideal for students who wish to learn the basics of First Aid. The course is delivered in house and results in a certificate indicating competency. Students will be taught how to bandage broken limbs, provide emergency resuscitation and ensure their own safety in potential dangerous situations. Name of activity: Quick Start Music Programme Time and venue: 12 weeks in Autumn and Spring Terms in Sixth Form Centre Lead member of staff: Mr. Fatodu This enrichment project is for students who wish to develop their work related skills in the specific area of the music industry. Students devise and develop a musical product which they market for sale. Participants are required to show their skills not only in the creation of the musical product but also in persuading people to invest and purchase the item. Previous products have included musical CDs recorded the school studio, music based software and musical instruments. 10
Name of activity: Painting and Drawing Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in AR6 Lead members of staff: Ms. Montero This activity is open to all students and offers the opportunity to learn or further develop drawing and painting skills with a specialist teacher. This activity offers progression into higher education by providing useful experiences for those considering A-Level Art & Design courses or future Foundation level courses in Art & Design. Name of activity: Picking at Pop Culture Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in 6M1 Lead members of staff: Mr. Leyman This activity involves exposure to a wide variety of classics from Film and TV, with the purpose of discussing what they tell us about our society politically, morally, philosophically and artistically. Mr Leyman s idiosyncratic taste in such matters ensures a mind-opening series of workshops. Students do not need any qualifications to take part but they do need to be willing to dedicate their time to discussing the pieces of film (which may over-run). Incorporating inter-disciplinary techniques and numerous methods of cultural criticism, this option is about articulating and responding to different views of the world, fuelled by an invigorating cocktail of screen classics. Name of activity: Classical Civilization Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in 6M2 Lead members of staff: Mr T. Kearns 11
This is a course for any students who wish to learn something interesting outside of their regular curricular study. Subjects covered will include the emperor Nero and Homer s Odyssey. Name of activity: Music - Composition Time and venue: Wednesday afternoon in MS4 Lead members of staff: Mr Pearson This activity is for students who wish to compose music. There are limited places on the course, and it is intended as an opportunity for those who have some clear aims in composition to hone the relevant skills and take advantage of the expertise and facilities available in the Music Department. 12
