1 TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HIGHER AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION (Performing Arts) PROGRAMME Professional Certificate 13/14 (performing arts pathway) The 2013/14 Programme The modular Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education programme caters for those in the professions who want to develop their understanding of, and expertise, in teaching and learning. The specialist training pathway for performing arts is delivered through a partnership between the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and the Institute of Education, and is designed for those in the performing arts profession who wish to gain accreditation for teaching in higher education, including conservatoires. The 60-credit Professional Certificate level of the programme provides pathways for staff from conservatoires and similar settings to meet the Fellowship requirements of the Higher Education Academy. The programme has evolved from the Institute s long tradition of offering a range of courses in the field of teaching and learning in higher and professional education. It is taught by committed academic staff with acknowledged expertise in these areas. The Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education programme also includes a 120-credit Post-Graduate Diploma and a 180-credit Master s (MA) Degree. Progression to these awards by Professional Certificate course members is encouraged.

2 The programme is designed to develop: The capacity to reflect critically on the changing genres of teaching and learning in the field of performing arts; A commitment to engage in mutual learning with colleagues and students; A personal and professional capacity for critical self-reflection and critical action; A commitment to construct quality learning experiences for students, and The capacity to draw upon the appropriate educational literature to inform practice. General Aims The educational aims of the specialist performing arts pathway are to provide an opportunity for professionals working in higher education to reflect upon key underlying educational philosophies, pedagogy and their academic experience to enhance their academic practice and also to develop: Theoretical knowledge and understanding of concepts and issues involved in learning and teaching in higher and professional education in the field of performing arts; Theoretical knowledge of learning processes; Application of theory within professional learning and teaching contexts; Critical consideration of the goals of higher and professional education; Theoretical and practical knowledge of current issues associated with higher and professional education; Professional knowledge and understanding of the policy context influencing the development of teaching and learning in higher and professional education; A deeper understanding of major issues in performing arts tuition and ensemble coaching in higher education, and reflect on how these relate to current practice, and Understanding of the roles and responsibilities of one-to-one teachers in performing arts contexts. 3 Timing and Attendance While the programme can be completed in one year, often participants follow it over two years. In some institutions it is tied in with a probationary period. The Professional Certificate level will require 10 full workshop days and associated time for completion of the assessment requirements. These have been constructed to directly relate to participants teaching/training practice and to pave the way for staff to achieve Descriptor 2 of the UK Professional Standards Framework and become accredited as Fellows of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Participants can commence their study in either October or January. Composing your Programme (specialist training pathway for performing arts teachers) Although coverage of certain core issues and themes in teaching and learning is essential for all course participants, the programme allows for a fairly high degree of flexibility. Whether a pathway leading to a Professional Certificate, Post-Graduate Diploma or Master s is followed, it is possible to compose a programme consisting of modules that provide a best fit with an individual s own interests and professional needs. The Structure of the Programme Module 1 Understanding Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education (Performing Arts) (MMATLH_15) Induction and Framing session (not for credit) Two workshops, one from each group: Group A One-to-one Teaching, Mentoring and Supervision in the Performing Arts Small Group Coaching in Performing Arts Group B Assessing Learning Designing Courses and Curricula Assessment: 5000 word assignment Credits: 30 Module 2 Advancing Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education (MMATLH_16) Core component advancing teaching and learning is embedded in the module plus one further workshop from Group A. Assessment: 5000 word evidence-based portfolio Credits: 30 Module 2 cannot be submitted before Module 1.

5 Programme Assessment Methods PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE There is considerable opportunity for choice and negotiation with the assignments, which are designed to encourage participants to integrate their learning in ways which are directly relevant to their own professional practice. The exact focus of an assignment is negotiable, though must demonstrably be related to the core themes of the module and the workshops that are undertaken. Each assignment also needs to provide evidence of your understanding of appropriate theoretical perspectives on teaching and learning, and an ability to purposefully link these to your own practice. Participants submit a written paper of 5,000 words in length and a 5,000 word Portfolio. The programme incorporates an important portfolio-building component. All TLHPE participants, with appropriate induction and support, collate a structured and evidenced record and review of their developing professional practice. The portfolio serves to integrate the various strands of the programme which have been followed, and to further refine the capacity for informed reflection. Staff and Research Interests TLHPE specialist training pathway staff are: Dr Andrea Creech (co-module leader): Teacher / trainer / lecturer training; researcher (musical development through the lifespan, parenting, interpersonal relationships), formerly professional musician and teacher in North America and UK. Dr Helena Gaunt (co-module leader): Assistant Principal at the Guildhall School; research area is one-to-one tuition in conservatoires; oboist and teacher at the Guildhall. Professor Susan Hallam: Faculty of Policy and Society (IOE): Researcher/teacher/lecturer training; Learning and teaching; music psychology and music education; disaffection; quality assurance. Carlos Lopez-Real: Professor of contemporary jazz and rhythm studies at the Guildhall; small bands coach; one-to-one tutor for instrumentalists and singers. Kate Paterson: Associate Professor of Vocal Studies, Guildhall School of Music & Drama Dinah Stabb: Artist in Residence, Guildhall School of Music & Drama responsible for research and development of collaborative practice and curriculum development across music and drama departments.
