2 Police Sciences and Sport Police Sciences Taster Day 14 September 2015 We are one of the few universities in the world to have an integrated, immersive learning facility the Hydra Simulation Suite. It enables real-time monitoring of leadership and decision making in critical incidents and major crime inquiries. Here, students can experience realistic simulated incidents in a safe learning environment, testing their ability to make decisions, take action and see the consequences. During this session, students will be immersed in a scenario in which they will have to make and justify decisions. Following this, our staff will debrief the situation based upon their policing experience and knowledge to build upon your students learning. Hydra Simulation Suites are used to train police officers at all levels -- from constable to chief constable. This means our students use exactly the same system that police use to train their staff, developing their skills to be better police officers. The University of South Wales is among UK leaders in sport and exercise science research -- this means students will be taught by lecturers who are at the forefront of their fields (REF 2014). Careers in Sport Conference 11 September 2015 This is the second year the University of South Wales is hosting the Careers in Sport Conference at USW Sport Park. By attending this event, your year 12/13 or college equivalent students will develop a better understanding of the variety of careers within the sport industry, as well as the importance of preparing themselves for a career in sport. The event will include keynote speakers, employers sessions and interactive sessions, including ICON, Street Games, and Disability Sport. Students will find out more about higher education, modern apprenticeships and coaching routes. 2 University of South Wales
3 Rugby Coaching Masterclasses for School and College Rugby Academies 5 October 2015 and 19 October 2015 Dean Parsons, course leader for Foundation Rugby Coaching and Development, and BSc (Hons) Rugby Coaching and Performance, includes our collaborative partners delivering this outstanding masterclass for rugby students who are interested in a career in rugby. The performance analytics sessions will be delivered by Sportstec experts and colleagues from the Welsh Rugby Union such as Rhys Long, the Wales and British and Irish Lions Analyst. Dr Ian Jefferies (UKSCA) will also deliver positionspecific rugby strength and power development sessions. Phil Davies, ex-leeds and Cardiff Blues Director of Rugby, will then deliver a coaching masterclass tailored to skill sets on the day, with an opportunity for students to be involved. Students will have the chance to talk to USW alumni who have gained full-time posts with professional regions, clubs and NGBs following their time on our rugby coaching courses. Sport Academic Conference 11 December 2015 The primary objectives of the day are to support the learning experience of your AS and A-Level PE and BTEC National Diploma sports students. It will increase their awareness of what higher education can offer, and help enhance the transition from secondary school to higher education. Sessions are designed to focus on key areas of both the AS and A-Level and BTEC curriculum, and will be delivered by experienced tutors in their respective areas of expertise. Typical sessions may include: Improving Performance (Training) The content of this session introduces students to a range of methods of training, together with how to condition fitness through appropriate principles of training. Improving Performance (Coaching) Students will be introduced to the how to coach and what to coach process through a variety of interactive sports. Sports Participation and the Health of the Nation The health of the nation is key area of concern. This session highlights the current status of health, participation and physical activity in Wales. Students will also be introduced to the policies and strategies of the Welsh Government (and those of other home nations), to increase levels of physical activity and sports participation. 3
4 Sport Sport and Exercise Science 27 April 2016 This event gives your Year 12 (or college equivalent) students the opportunity to try out our state-of-theart sport science laboratories at our Pontypridd Campus, Glyntaff. These include sessions covering aerobic exercise testing, biomechanics, and body composition and reaction testing. You must accompany your students at all times. Please also note that due to the interactive nature of activities and demonstrations in the laboratories, only some students will be able to take part in each activity, eg, the body composition tank. Students will need to wear sports gear and trainers for all activities, and two students will also need to bring swimming clothing. We offer a diverse range of courses, from chiropractic and clinical exercise physiology to midwifery, nursing and social work. Sport CPD Event for Teachers June 2016 For PE and sports teachers, this CPD event has been developed to enhance existing knowledge and includes practical and theoretical sessions. You will also have the opportunity to use our impressive facilities and laboratories at USW Sport Park. These laboratories will provide hands-on experience and an excellent opportunity to relate theory to practice and how to apply it back in the classroom for your students. Sport Laboratory Sessions Week commencing Monday 21 September 2015 and week commencing Monday 6 June 2016 To further support schools and colleges, and their sports programmes, we are delighted to offer specific weeks where you can book a dedicated session with us. Your students can visit the University to benefit from the use of our superb sports laboratory facilities and undertake supervised practical workshops. Morning and afternoon sessions will run through each week and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. 4 University of South Wales
