1 Job Description JOB TITLE: Head of Arts & Culture Programming (Maternity Cover) SALARY RANGE: c 32,000-36,000 LOCATION: REPORTING TO: ANNUAL LEAVE: London (occasional travel required) Director of Programming 20 days plus statutory and Jewish holidays PURPOSE OF ROLE: Working with and reporting directly to the Director of Programming, the Head of Arts & Culture Programming will assemble and manage an innovative, diverse and attractive year-round programme of high-quality creative arts and culture programmes, activities and events at JW3 reaching the widest range of JW3 s target audiences as possible and maximising the use of spaces in the centre. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 1. Development, Management and Delivery of Programme Be responsible for developing and implementing the adult Arts & Culture programming strategy. Manage the Arts and Culture programming team, currently made up of 5-6 part-time programmers, including running team meetings and conducting regular supervisions. Work with the Director of Programming, the other Programme Heads and relevant lay Programming Committees, continually to develop JW3 s programming vision, and ensure appropriate and effective articulation of this vision both internally and to the wider community. Devise, manage and deliver a year-round, diverse, full programme of Arts & Culture events, activities, festivals and opportunities of the highest quality, across the centre. These include, for example: o A full and diverse programme of performances in the Hall and other appropriate spaces (including a wide range of bands, musicians, singers, poets, comedians, artists, authors, dancers, DJs, actors, theatre groups, etc). o o Curating JW3 s own original festivals A diverse programme of non-performance events, activities and groups in a wide range of A&C areas, including (but not limited to); cinema, visual art, design arts, literature, cultural talks and guided walks.

2 Develop and be responsible for the delivery of an agreed number of JW3 original, innovative and unique programmes and high profile events in the context of the overall programme that reflect the Centre s vision, values and ambition. These will include flagship Arts & Culture programmes that will further enhance the centre s reputation. Establish JW3 as a venue for events as part of existing London festivals (e.g. London Jazz Festival, UK Jewish Film Festival, Jewish Book Week etc.) Hold a small number of events yourself and be present at these and certain other key events which the A&C team are running (including teaching/presenting /chairing where appropriate.) Ensure that all activities, and those delivering them, are reported, monitored and evaluated effectively. Work with existing systems (software and other forms of communication) and ensure that the A&C team are comfortable with these. Ensure that all activities under Arts & Culture programming are planned and delivered in a timely fashion and within budget, maximising the centre s resources. Risk assess activities and events and ensure that they comply with any relevant JW3 policies, e.g. safeguarding, health and safety etc Lead the Arts & Culture team towards meeting JW3 s annual objectives and, in particular, those of the Programming Department. 2. Programme Partners and Providers Work with existing partner organisations, generating collegial and vibrant frameworks for the development of the arts and culture programme. Oversee and/or manage all relevant partnership agreements, including, for example, with JMI (Jewish Music Institute) and UKJF (UK Jewish Film). Work with the Director of Programming, and where appropriate the other Programme Heads, to identify, develop, negotiate and manage appropriate new programme partnerships and agreements. Support programmers in the Arts & Culture programming team to manage the relationships with individual programme providers e.g. speakers, bands, comedians, theatre groups, actors, poets, performers, artists, festival producers etc. Ensure appropriate quality control across the team to ensure that all A&C activities and events are delivered to an appropriate, high standard. Identify new programme providers to be included in future programming and develop new relationships. 3. Management of Staff Line-manage relevant full and/or part-time staff within the A&C team, currently made up of 5-6 part time staff). Manage relevant freelance staff and interns as appropriate. Plan and carry out regular supervision meetings and regular team meetings.

Financial Management/Budgets Take responsibility for effectively and efficiently managing the overall budget and financial systems for the Arts & Culture programme, including working towards the financial objectives set with the Director of Programing, and following relevant reporting requirements. Ensure relevant Partners and Providers work to agreed budgets. Identify opportunities for external programme funding and work with the Director of Programming and the Director of Development to attract external funding to the programme. 5. Audience Development and Engagement Understand the interests of JW3 s diverse audiences. Work with the wider Programming Team and the Marketing Director to build appropriate relationships with our audiences and grow their loyalty and affiliation. Promote the JW3 programme to our existing and potential audiences. Implement effective feedback and evaluation processes to engage participants of all Arts & Culture activities and improve what we offer. Support the Director of Programming and the Marketing Director in devising approaches to seeking out new audiences. 6. Liaison with JW3 Colleagues Work closely with Director of Programming and other Heads of Programming to lead the wider team of programmers. Work collaboratively as part of a wider Programming Team in order to maximise the potential of our human resources to achieve JW3 s goals. Work collaboratively and effectively with JW3 colleagues, in particular the following: Production Manager, Duty Manager, Building Manager, Housekeeping team, Director of Finance, Director of Development, Marketing team and Director of Box Office. 7. Promoting and Representing JW3 Protect and enhance the reputation of JW3, presenting the organisation in an appropriate and professional manner to stakeholders. Act as an advocate for the impact of JW3 s work where appropriate. Seek opportunities to expand and promote awareness of JW3 and develop the organisation s profile as a venue for high quality arts and culture events and programmes. Specifically, ensure that JW3 is seen as a desirable venue on the various circuits (e.g. for touring theatre productions; high profile multi-venue music/film/comedy festivals etc) Represent JW3 in any relevant settings and forums within the wider Arts and Culture world. Build appropriate relationships with relevant organisations to raise JW3 s positive profile. 8. Other Responsibilities Attend all relevant staff meetings and supervisions, including fortnightly Programme Heads meetings and monthly staff meetings. Undertake other reasonable duties as required by your line manager.

4 PERSON SPECIFICATION The successful candidate must wholeheartedly buy into JW3 s mission, vision, values and guiding principles. A belief in the importance of inclusivity and working cross-communally, and a commitment to high quality Jewish engagement, arts and culture, and community-building is critical. Essential Experience Record of developing and implementing effective strategic plans and working in accordance with the objectives, timescales and budget of an organisation. Good track record of planning and delivering programmes in the field of arts and culture within a successful arts/cultural organisation or establishment. (e.g. within museums, galleries, arts centres, film festivals, literary festivals etc). Proven experience of effectively supporting and managing staff, appropriate to the level of the role A broad understanding of Jewish culture and the Jewish calendar, including relevant anniversaries that could translate into arts and culture programming, as well as an appreciation of, and passion for, Jewish arts and culture. Experience of successfully working under pressure, with multiple demands and in a changing environment. Track record of successful management of budgets. Experience of building, developing and maintaining effective relationships with partner organisations and individual providers (e.g. artists, writers, theatre groups, comedians etc). Desirable Experience Event management. Curating arts/culture festivals. Event management, especially within Arts venues. Experience in the operation event production and the booking of performers/speakers A network of relevant contacts in the arts world. Experience of working or volunteering in a community centre or other Jewish communal setting Voluntary or professional work with diverse audience types and age groups e.g. the elderly, students, adults with disabilities etc. A background in the production of (any of) performance, comedy, spoken word and music events and an interest in a variety of genres and approaches. Experience of implementing effective evaluation processes in order to improve projects. An understanding and some experience within multiple fields within the Arts Skills and Knowledge A high level of cultural literacy. Extensive knowledge of the UK, and Jewish, arts and cultural scenes, in particular the Jewish arts and culture scene. Understanding of best practice in the field of arts and culture. Good knowledge and understanding of comparable institutions, festivals and/or arts and culture events. Effective team-working and collaboration skills - ability to work with team of staff in a collaborative way in an environment where work is shared in order to meet tight deadlines.

5 Organisation - high level planning and organising skills in order to produce strategic and operational plans, and manage multiple projects simultaneously IT - high level of IT competency, including demonstrable effective use of Word, Excel, Outlook, to maximise efficiency. Empathy and social skills - in order to understand the perspective of others, respond to needs and expectations and build effective working relationships, e.g. with partner organisations, programme providers, colleagues etc. Influence - effective negotiating, influencing and persuasion skills at an appropriate level. Communication excellent verbal and written communications skills. Able to build networks, articulate the vision and mission of JW3, and excel in communicating with the public, colleagues and stakeholders. Self-direction - ability to work on own initiative and without direction. Ability to structure own time, use initiative, prioritise effectively to deliver on the key goals set by the CEO, Director of Programming and Board. Creativity and innovation - intellectual ability to think analytically and seek creative solutions to problems. Personal Qualities Shows commitment to and understanding of the principle of empowerment. Is articulate, dynamic and conscientious. Demonstrates positive leadership qualities. Has a personal commitment to engaging with the world of arts and culture. Has a proactive and flexible approach to work, including a willingness to work in the evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays as required. NB, to serve the needs of a community centre that operates 15 hours per day for 6-7 days per week, Programmer roles are not 9-5 office roles. Can demonstrate a commitment to and successful experience in endeavours aimed at building community. Has a natural ability to network effectively and form positive relationships.
