1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Number: Department: Section: Job Title: Reports To: For office use only Education Frome Community College Library Coordinator Assistant Principal English and Literacy Main Purpose of Job: Briefly - what is the job there for and why is it being done? Attach a brief organisation chart to show where the job fits. Coordinate a library management system to promote and develop literacy across the college. In addition to development of the library and its resources, provide an efficient library service to students and staff, in line with the college vision to improve literacy and achieve outstanding status. Work with individual and groups of students to improve their literacy skills. Ensure Pupil Premium Students and SEN students are a particular focus for intervention programmes. Main Responsibilities and Duties: What needs to be done? Describe the main responsibilities and duties required of the job. This should include responsibilities for the support or management of clients, employees, budgets, processes and equipment. Work with all faculties and departments across the college to run the library as a key learning resource to improve student thinking, progress levels and student outcomes. Develop a wealth of subject-specific teaching and learning resources, both within the library and across the school As directed by line manager, work with individuals and small groups of students to implement best practice learning resources and literacy programmes with the aim of Frome College reaching outstanding standards for literacy. Design and implement reading and study support for both individuals and groups of students which support SEN and operate within the SEN policy framework of the school. Liaise with the SENCO to ensure students on individual learning plans (IEP) are appropriately supported, monitored and evaluated accordingly. With direction from both Line Manager ensure that regular, clear communication of resources, workshops and library programmes is made to all staff and students across the College, thereby raising the profile of literacy in order to create and maintain an outstanding department. As directed by Line Manager, plan, develop and deliver relevant learning and study skills workshops and programmes across the college to equip all students to make effective use of the learning resources available, both during school hours and for extra-curricular activities. Study programmes should target SEN students and Pupil Premium students in particular.
2 Co-ordinate the Accelerated Reader Scheme, the Talk-Boost Scheme and other Communication Schemes as directed. Ensure records of student progress are recorded accurately and efficiently. Monitor and provide support to individual students studying in the library as necessary, including coaching students in how to effectively search the library catalogue, internet and other available resources Provide general administration of the Library e.g. maintaining a quiet environment, responding to requests for information, managing the loans service and the tracking and administration of overdue resources (compiling lists for distribution to tutors, parental letters, collection and receipting of fine income, processing, issuing and cataloguing of resources). Shelve returned resources. General repair and care of the environment and resources as necessary. Keep shelves and display boards in good order Supervise students in the library during break and lunch. With the HR Department, assist in the recruitment and day-to-day co-ordinating of volunteers if necessary, to support student learning and literacy activities Carry out other responsibilities appropriate to the grade as agreed with Line Manager or Business Manager Facts and Figures: Give facts and figures that help to give a picture of the job. This should include any statistics relevant to the job, for example, the number of clients supported, type and value of equipment, resources or premises for which the job has responsibility, size of budgets controlled or which the job has some impact on and, if appropriate, numbers of staff managed. Approximately 1200 students and approximately13% SEN students This role does not have responsibility for management of staff, however, may coordinate and/or work closely with volunteers and colleagues to support literacy activities, where necessary Key internal links are with teaching and support staff (approximately 200 staff), Build links with external agencies eg Frome Town Library, Writers Groups etc SUPPORTING PROCESSES Problem Solving and Creativity: Give examples of the problem solving and creativity involved in the job. This should include resolving issues over interruptions to work deadlines, priorities and changing demands. How often do these issues occur? Be able to respond to changing priorities and a fast moving environment. Ability to find creative solutions to student disengagement, always building aspirations of students Find creative solutions using Curriculum Literacy Resources and ICT where applicable, to increase literacy levels across the College. Decision Making: Give examples of the types of decisions which the job has responsibilities for making, including where appropriate those relating to resources, budgets and employees. Show where there is authority of freedom to act and where there is an impact via recommendations or advice. The post holder is responsible for the administration and co-ordination of all library activities and literacy and communication schemes across the college Physical Effort and Working Conditions: Give details and the frequency of any special effort needed, including the prolonged or frequent use of IT equipment and describe any particular working conditions, other than those encountered in a normal office environment, to which the job holder is subjected e.g. noise, outside working, unpleasant surroundings. This role involves working in an office-type environment, with frequent use of a computer, meeting with students, all college staff and external contacts from time-to-time.
3 Contacts and Relationships: Give details of the range and type of people within the Council or external organisations and including the recipients of services it is necessary to contact in order to carry out the responsibilities of the job. What is the range and purpose of the contact e.g. providing information or advice, directing, monitoring, influencing, motivating. Have experience working with or relating to young people and have a commitment to their education, development welfare and aspirations with particular focus on literacy Have the ability to build good working relationships with young people, teaching and support staff, and other educational establishments where necessary Frome Community College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of Children and Young People and all staff working with these groups are expected to share a commitment to this. Additional Information: Anything else which is relevant to the job which is not adequately covered elsewhere. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential together with the flexibility and adaptability to ever changing situations. You will be required to occasionally work flexibly to enable you to support events eg open evening. Time in lieu will be given to any additional agreed hours worked You will be emotionally aware, able to work independently co-ordinating a wide variety of projects and activities as well as work as part of a school team. You will have an approachable and good humoured disposition This is a hands on position. As well as a focus on literacy, you will be a strong administrator, with the ability to set up processes and systems and communicate those systems verbally, via the use of ICT, internet, databases and software packages available to you, where applicable. Ability to engage positively and successfully with all young people - including those who may be challenging - and remain calm and supportive at all times. You will show initiative and regularly review any library resource guidance and support on offer through the college. The post holder may need to take part in additional training to be able to deliver new strategies Knowledge, Skills and Experience: (To be completed by the Line Manager) The minimum general education standard, qualifications, training and level of experience required by the job holder to be fully effective in the job. Note that this information should relate to the requirements of the job and not what may be available from existing job holders. Candidates will have a good general education, including GCSE grade C or equivalent in English, Mathematics and Science. Previous experience in a similar role would be advantageous, however, not essential.
