1 Marysville Elementary School www. sd6.bc.ca/mes/ MAY 2014 NEWSLETTER Happy Earth Week at Marysville What a great week learning about our Earth and appreciating the beautiful world we are so fortunate to live in. We are hopeful that with the information and knowledge gained throughout the week the students will be proud in making Marysville Elementary an Earth Friendly School! Everyday!! On Tuesday April 22nd the students at Marysville School celebrated Earth Day. The students participated in an Earth Day Activity Morning. The children rotated with their buddy groups through eight fun, educational, Earth Day Activities set up by Mrs. Anna Keiver. In the afternoon the children participated in a school yard cleanup using Pitch In bags donated by the City of Kimberley. On Friday April 25th both Marysville and Lindsay Park students participated in an amazing Earth Day Walk!! Marlene and Dennis Driscoll collected 300 Hawthorne sticks throughout the winter and donated them as walking sticks for all the children in both schools. The children in each school worked diligently to sand their own walking stick which was then oiled and decorated. On Friday morning with the sun shining, Marysville students started walking, with their walking sticks up the Rails to Trails doing a trail cleanup along the way to Rotary Park, while the Lindsay Park students began their walk down from Lindsay Park to Rotary Park. The goal was that both schools would meet at Rotary Park for a picnic and an Earth Day Celebration! It was an amazing day!! The children from both schools did a wonderful job on the walk and were so proud of their walking sticks! A big Thank You is extended to the Kimberley Fire Department who brought their ladder truck to take an aerial picture of the students and staff in the formation of a tree. Thank you to Mrs. Driscoll and Mrs. Keiver for your leadership in organizing this wonderful Earth Day Walk for the students and staff at Marysville and Lindsay Park School.

2 Music Monday, May 5 th at 11:00 am in the Platzl. Please feel free to join us in the Platzl for this celebration! The Marysville students have been working hard on the Music Monday song and will be singing in a choir with the Lindsay Park students. Students are to wear white shirts and jeans. Early Dismissal-May 7th May 7th is early dismissal students will be dismissed at 1:20. The busses will run one hour earlier. Please make sure you re at the bus stop one hour ahead. Piano Recital New Date!! May 8th Please feel join us Thursday, May 8th in the gym for the Piano Recital. Bike Rodeo We would like all students to bring a bike and a helmet to school on Friday, May 9th so they can participate in the Bike Rodeo. The goal of the Bike Rodeo is to teach road safety and bike riding skills. Transporting bikes to and from school may be an issue for some families if so parents are welcome to store bikes in the gym before or after the Bike Rodeo. Thanks to Charlie Cooper for organizing the event this year. We are looking for volunteers for this event, if you can help please give the school a call at and let us know if you can help. Thank you. Bike Safety For student safety we are asking all students to push their bikes from the crosswalk at the highway to the school and after school from the school to the crosswalks. Thank you for your cooperation. Kindergarten Orientation and Ready-Set-Learn Event Thursday, May 15th at 12:45-2:15 Next year s Kindergarten students and all three and four year olds are invited to attend our information session on Thursday, May 15th at 12:45 2:15. Kindergarten children will have a chance to meet their teachers while parents attend an information session in the school library. School and district staff will be available to answer questions. Parents of three and four year olds will have an opportunity to meet with local service providers in the gymnasium to see what services are available for their family and children. All participants will be given books and other educational resources that they can use at home. We hope to see you there. David Suzuki 30x30 Challenge: May 1-30 The staff at Marysville Elementary School are excited to be taking part in the David Suzuki Foundation s 30x30 Nature Challenge this year! Over the last decade, researchers have documented what most of us know intuitively: nature is good for our health and well-being. Being regularly immersed in a natural setting, like a park, field or forest can reduce stress and symptoms of attention-deficit disorders while boosting immunity, energy levels and creativity. The message is clear- kids need nature! During the month of May, staff and students will join Canadians coast to coast in spending at least 30 minutes a day in nature every day for 30 days. You can help by making sure your child comes dressed for the outdoors each day. This might require sunscreen, hats, or raincoats- we ll try to get out no matter the weather. And why not join the 30x30 Nature Challenge as a family? Spending time outside together is good for everyone, not to mention lots of fun. You can sign up at Participants will receive simple ideas for incorporating green time into their busy schedules. If you have something that you love to do in nature and would be willing to share it with your child s class, please let us know! Thank you for your support! Marysville Elementary School Staff Mother s Day Basket The money and ticket stubs sold and any unsold tickets are due back on or before Friday, May 2nd, with the draw being made at our school on Friday, May 9th. Please make sure the amount of money you are returning with your tickets matches the number of tickets you have sold. Thanks to all of those volunteering time to sell tickets, to Nicole Duri for organizing the draw and to the people who made donations to the basket. Field trips and special activities would not be possible without the hard work of all our volunteers to raise money for our school. Thank you for supporting this fundraising event.

3 Grade 3 Parent Evening at McKim Parents of students who will be attending McKim next year are invited to attend a parent evening at McKim School on Wednesday, June 4th 6:00-7:00 pm. The Grade 3 students will be visiting McKim School on the morning of June 12th. GREEN GAMES WINNER We are also very proud to announce that we were the winners of the Green Games this year and the $ prize money will be used to purchase a green house for the school garden! BE A HOMESTAY FAMILY! International students from around the world are currently registering to start school at Selkirk in September 2014! Tickets are $12 for every performance and $5 student tickets on Thursday night the 22nd, and $5 seniors tickets for the matinée on Saturday the 24th. The production is rated PG (Parental Guidance). If you know that your child/ children will not be attending Marysville Elementary next year could you please fill in the information below and send it back to the school. It is very important that we are aware of student numbers as soon as possible. If you have a child or know of a child that is enrolling in Kindergarten please enroll them as soon as possible.
