1 Hafa Adai AES Parents and Sponsors, Second quarter has begun and teachers and students are working together learning concepts and skills that continuously promote academic excellence. As the assistant principal and I visit classrooms, we observe students working individually with teachers and in small groups. They are also engaging in STEM instruction that is integrated with other content subjects and technology. You should see our Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students moving among different developmental centers skillfully. It is really amazing to see your children enjoying their learning experiences and working so well with one another. When you attend your scheduled parent-teacher conferences next week, your child s teacher will share more detailed information about their academic and social strengths and areas of improvement that you can reinforce at home. Please come prepared to engage in a collaborative and meaningful dialogue with your child s teacher. Our students participated in Red Ribbon Week Campaign activities last week, and on Wednesday, pledged to love themselves and live a life free of drugs. They were dressed in red shirts and all around the Dolphin Theater was one happy family of AES Dolphins. Please enjoy the beautiful photos of them and our school banner, which placed third in Guam s island-wide contest, in the next few pages of today s newsletter. The assistant principal and I regularly monitor the students during lunch-recess times and we notice that a number of them have not yet mastered the art of tying their shoelaces. We spend time practicing with them because of the safety hazard untied shoelaces pose when they run. Please continue to practice this important skill with them and I assure you they will help other students learn as well. Children build leadership and learning capacity in school too! Please feel free to send your students to school with a hat until our playground canopies are installed. Though 20 minutes is not an exceptionally long time, the sun is very hot and the students do run around most of the recess time period. We just want to ensure they are safe at all times. As always, thank you for supporting the school-home partnership on your child s behalf. The relationship we share is important to the teaching and learning process. We are grateful for your assistance and commitment to student learning and success. Have a great weekend! 3 Dear Parents and Teachers, Andersen Elementary School Information Center will be hosting a Reading Counts Club as an after school activity. The Reading Counts Club s mission is to provide an environment to read books and take quizzes on books available through the Scholastic Reading Counts Program. The Reading Counts Club will meet on Monday s after school from 2:15-3:00 in the Information Center, room C-29 starting Monday, November 24, Students must be signed up with the club or accompanied by a parent to use the facility. Permission forms are attached. Enrollment is open for grades 2 5 (Kindergarten and 1 st graders welcome with parent). Forms may be picked up and returned to the Information Center. Please note that it is not the responsibility of the front office staff or the teacher s obligation to turn the form into the Information Center. Club enrollment will be limited to 20 students based on the date/time the form was returned. The names beyond the limit will be placed on a waiting list and the parent/guardian will be notified when an opening is available. Students will need to know their computer log in and password and their Reading Counts log in and password. Students will be expected to be self-motivated. Students not utilizing the club as intended will be asked not to return and the parent/guardian will be notified. Students will be accompanied to the main office for dismissal at 3:00 p.m. For more information or to volunteer please contact the Information Specialist at
4 Guidelines for Reading Counts A student may read a book or a book may be read to the student (or to a class) by a teacher, parent or reading buddies. The number of quiz questions will be 10 (this can be adjusted based on a case-by-case basis) from a bank of 30 questions. Kindergarten and first grade and are set at 5 questions for the beginning of the year. A student must correctly answer at least 7 of the 10 questions or 4 of the 5 questions to pass the quiz. A student is permitted 3 attempts to successfully pass a quiz. The student must wait one day between retakes. A student may use the book read to reconfirm details or specific answers; not read the book as he/she takes the quiz. Students are encouraged to try to take the quiz without the book. A student will receive points for each quiz based on the difficulty and length of the book. Students are highly encouraged to read within their lexile. For description please refer to for more information. Note: Quizzes are only available through the school s computers. When a student reaches 25 points (50, 100, 150, 250, or 500) points, he/she will receive a dogtag (charm) from an administrator at the beginning of each month. Additionally, K-2 is recognized at 10 and 75 points. The awards have been provided by the PTO. When a student reaches 150 points, his/her picture will be displayed at the entrance to the Information Center. Those who reach 375 or 500 by the end of the year will receive a trophy or medal. (250 for K-2). Students are not able to take quizzes taken in previous school years. Classroom teachers may also be providing their own incentive programs.

10 Nurse Office Notes November is Diabetes Awareness Month Talk to your health care provider about the risk factors in your family, take precautions, & support the people you know with Diabetes! Continue to say BOO to the Flu! This year, the Centers for Disease Control advise everyone 6months of age and older to get a flu shot during the months of October and November. Washing your hands frequently is a must during this time of year. Effective hand washing is the number one way to prevent illness. Please keep all sick children home from school for a fever of or greater or vomiting. In order to return to school after being sick, a student must be fever free (without the use of medications) for 24 hours and not have any vomiting within the last 8 hours. If ever unsure please contact the school nurse office. We can protect and strengthen our own immunity by eating nutritious foods, taking daily walks, sleeping 8 10 hours a night, reducing stress, and smiling daily : ) Keeping Your Children Healthy and Safe
