1 This information packet is to familiarize you with our classroom expectations and policies. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me. Mrs. Catron First Grade Teacher Woodmen Hills Elementary Back-To-School Packet I am so excited to get to know each and every one of you, as well as your child. I look forward to a fabulous year! Students will be dismissed from the classroom at the end of each day Schedule 8:20 School begins 8:20-8:45 Planners and Calendar 8:45-10:50 Reading Block (Phonics/whole group/small group) 10:57-11:38 Recess/Lunch 11:45-12:45 Writing (small group instruction) 12:45-1:25 Math 1:25-1:40 1st grade recess 1:40-2:30 Specials 2:35-2:45 Snack 2:45-3:25 Science/Social Studies 3:30 Dismissal

2 Specials There are 5 specials the students go to on a rotation basis. A-Day Art B-Day Technology C-Day Music D-Day Library E-Day P.E. Planners Everyday the students write down the night s homework in their planners. Please look at your child s planner each night and initial letting me know you have seen it. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to write me a note in the planner. Money Any money brought to school should be in an envelope and labeled with your child s name, amount, and what the money is used for. Snacks and water bottles With your permission, your child may bring a healthy snack to school. An acceptable snack would be fruit, crackers, pretzels, veggie sticks, etc. Water bottles are permitted in class. They should be taken home every day and filled at home, not at school. Water only, no juice please. Supplies As your child s personal supplies are depleted, I will send home a list of what is needed. Birthdays Due to the District s Wellness Policy, birthday treats will no longer be allowed in school. However, students may bring a nonfood item, such as pencils, to share with classmates, Please notify me if your child plans to bring something in on or around their special day. Clothing Your child should always be dressed appropriately for the weather. We do have recess daily unless the temperature and/or wind chill is 15 degrees or less.

3 Field Trips We will have a couple of field trips throughout the year. Anticipated field trip (but not limited to) include going to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo as well as a walking field trip to local businesses. Red Take-Home Folder Along with the planner, your child will bring a red take home folder home each night that will contain finished work, notes, homework assignments, etc. This folder should be returned to school each day. Friday Folders A large white folder will go home each Friday. This folder needs to be returned on Monday EMPTY with a parent signature on the front. This folder has important notes from the teacher, office, and school district as needed. Corrected papers may also go in Friday folders and other days as well. Grading Policy The following is a key to the daily grading system used in our classroom. You will see these marks on homework and daily classroom assignments. This grading scale also corresponds with our quarterly report cards. 4 = consistently and independently performs above grade level. 3 = Demonstrates on grade level skills 2 = requires assistance or is inconsistent on grade-level skills 1 = working on foundational skills Homework Policy Regular homework assignments help students learn responsibility, perseverance, self-discipline, and time management. Students also grow in their independence by being able to successfully complete school related tasks with a minimum of direct help. All homework directly coincides with current lessons taught in class. Prompt completion aides in mastery of concepts.

4 Discipline: Please review Discipline Policy in packet. Notes If your child is not to ride the bus home or is to ride another bus home with a friend, please write a note or call the front office to inform us. Parties We will have several parties or celebrations throughout the year. You will receive further information as each one approaches. Popcorn Fridays PTA coordinates popping popcorn for all WHES students on Friday. 1 bag of popcorn costs $0.25. If you would like your child to receive popcorn on Fridays please send money to school on Thursdays. **********If parents volunteer to support popping popcorn in our classroom we get ½ of the profits. Our class is scheduled to pop popcorn on August 17, Toys Toys may be brought to school for special occasions only. We will inform you of these special occasions. If your child brings a toy for an after school activity or daycare, it should be kept in their backpacks. Volunteers If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the attached volunteer sheet and return it to school. Thank you in advance for all of your help! I certainly appreciate your cooperation and support and want to thank you for allowing me to touch your child s life. I want this first grade class to have a very positive learning experience.. 5 Parent Volunteers There are a variety of ways to help out. Working from home, coming in one day a week, every other week, every day, whenever needed we are flexible!!! Please let me know in advance so that I may be prepared for your arrival. Check any of the following you would be interested in doing with your child s class. I am interested in being the PTA classroom representative contact person. Work from home - anytime (preparing projects, activities, scrapbook ) Paperwork/Workroom - anytime (photocopying, laminating, paper cutter, bulletin boards, organizing, filing, posters ) Small group, one-on-one time with students Parties Help coordinate our classroom holiday parties. 6 Woodmen Hills Elementary 2 nd grade Homework Policy 2 nd grade views homework as an integral part of the school experience. Active, successful student participation in homework supports our beliefs of how children learn best. Homework benefits students in not only promoting academic success, but also by providing valuable opportunities to build important character traits. Regular homework assignments help students learn responsibility, perseverance, self-discipline, and time management. Students also grow in their independence by being able to successfully complete school related tasks with a minimum of direct help. Saxon Phonics and envision Math homework directly coincide with current lessons taught in class. Prompt completion aides in mastery of concepts. Time Allotment-minimum of 20 to 30 minutes per day. We also suggest reading to, with, and by your child frequently. Note- Homework assignments may vary from day to day and teacher to teacher.
