12 Ergoomic cosideratios 11 Welcome Wheever possible, try ad take ito accout the followig ergoomic cosideratios whe usig your ew computer, whether at home or i the office: Positio of the keyboard ad mouse Make sure the keyboard is directly i frot of you. Keep your forearms horizotal, with your wrists i a eutral, comfortable positio while usig the keyboard or mouse ot at a agle. Let your upper arms hag aturally at your sides. Place the mouse at the same level as the keyboard ad use your whole arm to move it. Positio ad viewig agle of the display Set the display at a comfortable viewig distace. Make sure the display scree is at eye level or slightly lower. Use the display s tiltig feature to fid the best positio. You ca reduce eye-strai ad musclefatigue by adjustig the tilt of the display to the proper positio. Remember to adjust the brightess settig of the display. Furiture ad posture Sit i a chair with good back support. Adjust the level of the chair so your feet are flat o the floor. A footrest may make you more comfortable. 14 Shuttig dow your computer safely 13 Usig your VAIO It is importat that you shut dow your computer properly so you do ot lose usaved data. To shut dow your computer, proceed as follows: 1 Tur off ay peripherals coected to your computer. 2 Click the Start butto. 3 Click Tur Off Computer. The Tur off computer widow appears. 4 Click Tur Off. 5 Respod to ay prompts warig you to save documets or to cosider other users ad wait for your computer to tur off automatically. 15 Usig the keyboard 14 Usig your VAIO Your VAIO is delivered with a wireless keyboard. You ca place the keyboard aywhere you fid comfortable withi a rage of 10 m* from the mai uit. The keyboard has a stadard key arragemet ad additioal keys that perform specific fuctios. 16 15 Usig your VAIO KEY FUCTIO 1 Stadby Press the butto to place the computer i Stadby mode. Press the power butto or Stadby key briefly to resume ormal operatio. 2 umeric keypad Use the umeric keypad to type umbers or to perform basic maths calculatios. Press the um Lock key to activate the umeric keypad. Press the um Lock key agai to deactivate the umeric keypad. 3 Directioal arrows The Up, Dow, Left, ad Right arrow keys move the poiter o the scree. 4 Applicatios The Applicatios key displays a shortcut meu i certai software programmes. Pressig this key is equivalet to clickig the right mouse butto. 5 Poitig device See Usig the poitig device (page 18) for more iformatio. 6 Widows The Microsoft Widows key displays the Start meu. Pressig this key is equivalet to clickig Start o the taskbar.

17 16 Usig your VAIO KEY FUCTIO 7 <F> key Used i combiatio with other keys to execute commads. <F>+<F2>: Turs off the speaker soud. <F>+<F3>: Decreases the volume of the speakers. <F>+<F4>: Icreases the volume of the speakers. <F>+<F5>: Decreases the brightess of the display scree. <F>+<F6>: Icreases the brightess of the display scree. 8 Fuctio keys The 12 fuctio keys alog the top of the keyboard are used to perform certai tasks. The task associated with each fuctio key may vary from oe applicatio to the ext. 9 LED scree um Lock: Caps Lock: Turs o whe the umber keys i the umeric keypad are active. Turs o whe the letters appear i uppercase as you type. The <Shift> key lowers the case of typed characters whe Caps Lock is o. Scroll Lock: Turs o whe the scree scrolls differetly (ot all applicatios support this fuctio). 10 Battery compartmet Storage compartmet for the AA batteries. 11 Keyboard feet Exted to adjust the keyboard height. 12 COECT butto Press to eable the keyboard to commuicate with the system uit.

18 Before you use the keyboard 17 Usig your VAIO Before attemptig to use the wireless keyboard, you must eable commuicatio betwee the computer ad the keyboard. Four AA batteries, for use i the wireless keyboard, are supplied with your VAIO. To coect the wireless keyboard, proceed as follows: 1 Isert the 4 AA batteries (1) ito the wireless keyboard as show. 2 Tur o the computer. 3 Slide the power switch o the right-had side of the keyboard to tur o the keyboard (2). 4 Press the COECT butto o the right pael of the computer (3). 5 Tur the wireless keyboard over ad press the COECT butto (4). Commuicatio betwee the wireless keyboard ad the computer is ow active. Steps 4 ad 5 must be carried out withi 10 secods of each other. If your wireless keyboard does ot operate properly, the batteries may eed to be replaced. Always use the same type ad brad of batteries. If your wireless keyboard is ot beig used for exteded periods of time, remove the batteries to avoid possible damage from battery leakage. Do ot place other wireless devices or metal objects ear your VAIO or wireless keyboard, as this may cause iterferece. Do ot obstruct the commuicatio betwee your wireless keyboard ad your VAIO. If you wat to put the keyboard i a more ergoomical positio, ope the keyboard feet.

19 Usig the poitig device 18 Usig your VAIO The keyboard features a poitig device (1), which cotrols the cursor o the scree. You ca poit to, select ad drag objects o the scree usig the built-i poitig device. Actio Poit Click Double-click Right-click Drag ad select Descriptio Slide oe figer o the poitig device to place the poiter (2) o a item or object. Press the left butto (3) oce. 20 19 Usig your VAIO Before usig the poitig device Before attemptig to use the poitig device, you must activate it. To activate the poitig device, proceed as follows: 1 Fold the keyboard out. 2 Tur o the Poitig Device switch (1). 3 Close the lower part of the cover as show (2). You ca ow use the poitig device together with your keyboard. 4 If you oly wat to use the poitig device, close the cover completely as show (3).

21 20 Usig your VAIO Usig the mouse Your computer is delivered with a wireless optical mouse, which has o cables to plug i ad uses a light-emittig diode (LED) istead of a ball. You ca use the mouse aywhere you feel comfortable withi a rage of 10 m* of the mai uit. Avoid usig the mouse o a piece of glass or other trasparet material, as this ca iterfere with smooth cursor movemet o the scree. * Effective usage distace depedig o the eviromet. 1 Left butto Click or double-click the left butto to select items. To drag ad drop items, hold the left butto dow while slidig the mouse, the release the butto to drop the item. 2 Right butto Press the right butto oce to display a cotext-sesitive shortcut meu (ot always a active fuctio). 3 Cetral wheel Tur the cetral wheel to scroll up or dow a page. Press the wheel oce to lock the scroll actio ad cotrol the movemet by movig the etire mouse (The scroll fuctio is available oly with applicatios that support it). 4 Power switch Slide switch to tur the mouse o ad off. This will help you save battery power. 5 COECT butto Press to eable commuicatio betwee your VAIO computer ad the wireless mouse. You ca adjust the mouse poiter speed ad other fuctios uder Mouse Properties. To display Mouse Properties, go to the Cotrol Pael, select Priters ad Other Hardware, the select Mouse.

22 Before usig the mouse Before attemptig to use the wireless mouse, you must eable commuicatio betwee the computer ad the mouse. Two AA batteries, for use i the wireless mouse, are supplied with your VAIO. They are idetified by a sticker "For mouse" o the packagig. To coect the wireless mouse, proceed as follows: 1 Tur the wireless mouse over ad slide the power butto to the OFF positio (1). 2 Isert the two AA batteries ito the wireless mouse as show (2). 3 Tur o the computer. 4 Press the COECT butto o the right pael of the computer (3). 5 Tur the wireless mouse over, slide the power butto to the O positio (4) ad press the COECT butto (5). 24 Usig the TV fuctio Your VAIO is equipped with a TV tuer board. I combiatio with Soy's VAIO Zoe software, it allows you to: Watch, record ad play back aalogue broadcasted cable ad terrestrial TV programmes, all by remote cotrol; Digitise aalogue video ad audio usig the S-video or composite ad audio iputs; Maage your video uits (capsules), preview them ad create multiple folders; Set up a timer to record chaels at a repeated time; Susped viewig TV (time-shiftig); 23 Usig your VAIO Stream your recorded TV cotets via Etheret (or WLA) to coected PCs. 25 Usig the disc drive 24 Usig your VAIO Your computer is equipped with a double layer DVD±RW drive, which reads data from a compatible CD or DVD ad writes data to a DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, CD-RW, or CD-R. To isert a disc, proceed as follows: 1 Tur o the computer. 2 Press the eject butto to ope the drive. The tray pops out. 3 Place a disc i the tray with the label side facig outwards. Make sure the disc is secure i the cetre of the tray. 4 Close the tray by pushig it getly. See the prited Troubleshootig Guide.

26 Readig ad writig CDs ad DVDs To achieve optimum performace whe writig data o to disc (also called burig ), follow these recommedatios: 25 Usig your VAIO To make the data o a disc readable o a optical drive, you eed to close the sessio whe you eject it. To complete this process, follow the istructios icluded with your software. Oly use circular discs. Do ot use discs with ay other shape (star, heart, card, etc.), as this may damage the disc drive. Do ot strike or shake the computer while writig data to a disc. For optimal writig speed, deactivate the screesaver before writig data to a disc. Memory-residet disc utilities may cause ustable operatio or data loss. Deactivate these utilities before writig data to a disc. Whe usig your software applicatio to bur discs, make sure you exit ad close all other applicatios. ever touch the surface of the disc. Figerprits ad dust o the surface of a disc may cause writig errors. Do ot put your VAIO computer ito a power savig mode while usig the pre-istalled software or while usig the CD burig software. ever put labels o discs. This will affect the use of the disc irreparably.

27 Playig DVDs To achieve optimum performace whe playig DVDs, you should follow these recommedatios: Close all ope applicatios before playig a DVD movie. Play DVDs with the software VAIO Zoe. Do ot switch power savig modes while playig a DVD. Do ot use built-i utility applicatios to speed up discs, because they may cause the system to become ustable. Make sure the screesaver is deactivated. 26 Usig your VAIO Regio codes idicators are labelled o the DVDs to idicate i which regio ad o what type of player you ca play the disc. Uless a '2' (Europe belogs to regio '2') or 'all' (this meas that you ca play this DVD everywhere i the world) is labelled o your DVD disc or o the packagig, you caot play the disc o this player. Do ot try to chage the regio code settigs of the DVD drive. Ay difficulties caused by chagig the regio code settigs of the DVD drive are out of warraty. If your computer has Wireless LA ad Wireless LA is activated, playig DVDs may cause some iterruptios i audio ad video playback. Troubleshootig discs If you have problems with your optical disc, check Help ad Support Ceter ad the VAIO-Lik website (

28 Usig the modem 27 Usig your VAIO Your VAIO desktop is equipped with a iteral modem. As described o the prited Specificatios sheet, use the sigle RJ-11 jack to coect the supplied modem cable to the phoe lie. Oce you have coected the phoe lie ad registered with a Iteret Service Provider, you ca take advatage of olie services ad the Iteret, to register your computer ad software olie ad to cotact VAIO-Lik. Troubleshootig the modem If you have problems with your modem, check Help ad Support Ceter ad the VAIO-Lik website (

29 28 Usig your VAIO Usig power modes The colour of the power idicator light behid the power butto tells you which mode the computer is i. Power idicator Gree Amber o light Mode Computer is i ormal mode (o) Computer is i Stadby mode Computer is tured off or i Hiberate mode Please see the prited Specificatios sheet for the exact locatio of the idicators. To set the timer for your computer to automatically eter Stadby or Hiberate mode after a certai amout of time, go to Cotrol Pael, click Performace ad Maiteace ad chage the settigs uder Power Schemes.
