1 Desktop Maagemet 9 Desktop Maagemet Tools Mac OS X icludes three desktop maagemet tools that you might fid helpful to work more efficietly ad productively: u Stacks puts expadable folders i the Dock. Clickig a folder displays its cotets, makig it quick ad easy to ope files you use ofte. u u Exposé helps you cope with scree clutter by arragig ope widows so you ca see their cotets or your desktop with a press of a butto. Sow Leopard adds Exposé itegratio to the Dock, makig it eve more fuctioal. Spaces eables you to orgaize widows ito groups, thus helpig you to maage projects or tasks. I this chapter, I explai how to take advatage of each of these features. I also explai how you ca set prefereces for them so they work the way you wat them to. 2 Chapter 9 Stacks Mac OS X Stacks feature displays the cotets of ay folder i the Dock as a fa (Figure 1), grid (Figure 2), or list (Figure 3). Click the folder ico to display the stack. The click the item i the stack to ope it. This makes it easy to orgaize Dock items ad access the applicatios, folders, ad files you use most. By default, Mac OS X 10.6 is precofigured with three stacks folders (Figure 3): u u u Applicatios is the computer s Applicatios folder default locatio for istalled applicatios. Documets is your Documets folder the default locatio for saved documets. Dowloads is your Dowloads folder the default locatio for files you dowload from the Iteret. The item opes. To ope a stack folder 1. I the Dock, click the folder to ope to display its stack (Figure 1, 2, or 3). 2. Click the appropriate butto: s For a fa (Figure 1), click the Show i Fider or More i Fider butto at the top of the fa. The wordig of this commad varies depedig o whether all items are showig. s For a grid, click the Ope i Fider butto at the bottom of the grid. You may have to scroll dow i the grid (Figure 2)to display this butto (Figure 5). s For a list (Figure 3), click the Ope i Fider butto at the bottom of the list. 4 Chapter 9 To avigate folders withi a stack grid 1. Display the stack grid you wat to avigate ad, if ecessary, scroll to display the folder you wat to ope (Figure 5). Click the ame of the paret folder to view the cotets of that folder agai. 2. To ope a folder i the grid, click it. The grid displays the cotets of the folder you clicked. Figure 6 shows what the Applicatios stack might look like after clickig the Utilities folder withi it. Navigatig Folders withi Stacks 3. To back out of a folder, click the ame of the paret folder i the upper left corer of the grid stack (Figure 6). 4 Tips You ca repeat step 2 as desired to dig deeply ito the file hierarchy. The list turs ito a hierarchical meu with the folder s cotets displayed i a submeu (Figure 7). 4 Tips You ca repeat step 2 as desired to ope multiple submeus for deeply ested folders. Do oe of the followig to display a meu of optios (Figure 6): s Hold dow C ad click. s Right-click or, o a buttoless trackpad, click with two figers. s If the stack is set to display as a list, click to display the list ad the choose Optios to display the Optios submeu (Figure 9). 3. To chage the sort order of items i the stack, choose a Sort by optio. 4. To set the appearace for the the stack s ico o the dock, choose a Display as optio: s Folder displays the stack s ico usig the same ico as its source folder. s Stack displays the stack s ico as a stack of icos (Figure 10). 5. To set the appearace for the folder s ope stack, choose a View cotet as optio: s Fa always displays the stack as a fa (Figure 1). s Grid always displays the stack as a grid (Figure 2). s List always displays the stack as a list (Figure 3). s Automatic displays the stack as a fa (Figure 1) uless there are too may items i the folder to fit the it displays them as a grid (Figure 2). 6 Chapter 9 Exposé If you re like most Mac OS X users, you probably have multiple applicatios ad widows ope at the same time while you work. The result ca be a cluttered scree, with may layers of widows hidig other widows ad the desktop. Exposé helps solve the problem of scree clutter by makig it easy to see all ope widows i all applicatios (Figure 11), all ope widows i a sigle applicatio (Figure 12), or the etire desktop (Figure 16) at oce. Simply press oe of Exposé s shortcut keys (Table 1) to see what you eed to see. Exposé Mac OS X 10.6 adds Exposé itegratio with the Dock. Now you ca view all ope widows i a specific applicatio by simply clickig that applicatio s ico i the Dock (Figure 13). Ad whe widows are displayed i Exposé, they ow appear i a eat grid, makig them eve easier to see ad access. 4 Tips If you re usig a laptop Macitosh, such as a MacBook or MacBook Pro, you may eed to hold dow the key while pressig the appropriate key i Table 1 to activate Exposé. You ca customize Exposé s shortcut keys or add additioal Exposé triggers. I explai how o page 174. You ca use Exposé while copyig or movig items. All ope widows resize ad arrage themselves ito a grid so you ca see ito each oe (Figure 11). 4 Tip Aother way to ope Exposé is to ope the Exposé ico i the Utilities folder iside your Applicatios folder. This is ot exactly as easy as pressig a sigle key, but you could add the Exposé ico to the Dock, makig it accessible with just a click. To see all ope widows i the active applicatio Press 0. All ope widows i the active applicatio resize ad arrage themselves ito a grid while other widows simply disappear (Figure 12). To see all ope widows i a specific applicatio 1. Press 9 or 0 to activate Exposé (Figure 11 or 12). 2. Click the Dock ico for the applicatio widows you wat to view. Exposé displays oly the widows for that applicatio (Figure 13). 4 Tip As show i Figures 13 ad 14 clickig a Dock ico while Expose is active displays a meu of optios for a active applicatio. 8 Chapter 9 To activate a specific widow 1. With Exposé active, poit to the widow you wat to activate. A blue border appears aroud it (Figure 15). 2. Click the widow. Exposé is released ad the widow comes to the frot. To see the desktop u Press -. All ope widows shift to the edges of the scree so you ca see the desktop (Figure 16). To switch from oe Exposé view to aother Press the shortcut key for the other view. To release Exposé Press q. Choose Apple > System Prefereces, or click the System Prefereces ico i the Dock. 2. I the System Prefereces widow that appears, click the Exposé & Spaces ico. 3. If ecessary, click the Exposé butto to display Exposé cofiguratio optios (Figure 17). 4. To set hot corers to activate Exposé, choose a optio from the appropriate pop-up meu i the Active Scree Corers area. Each meu is the same (Figure 18) ad correspods to a specific corer of the scree. The Exposé optios are: s All Widows uses Exposé to display all ope widows (Figure 8). This is the same as pressig 9 with default Exposé settigs. s Applicatio Widows uses Exposé to display all widows for the active applicatio (Figure 10). This is the same as pressig 0 with default Exposé settigs. s Desktop uses Exposé to move all widows aside so you ca see the Desktop (Figure 12). This is the same as pressig - with default Exposé settigs. 5. To set shortcut keys ad mouse buttos for Exposé fuctios, choose optios from the pop-up meus i the Exposé area (Figures 15 ad 16). 6. Whe you re fiished settig optios, click the Exposé & Spaces prefereces pae s close butto to save your settigs ad dismiss the widow. Right ad Left o the keyboard shortcuts pop-up meu (Figure 19) refer to the S ad A keys. Settig Exposé Prefereces Shift, Cotrol, Optio, ad Commad o the keyboard shortcuts pop-up meu (Figure 19) refer to the s, C, o, ad $% keys. If you hold dow the s, C, o, or $% key while displayig the keyboard shortcuts or mouse butto pop-up meu, the meu chages to reflect the key(s) beig held. Figure 21 shows a example with the s ad o keys held dow. To assig mouse buttos to Exposé fuctios with the mouse butto popup meu (Figure 19), it s best to have a multibutto mouse. 11 Spaces Desktop Maagemet Mac OS X s Spaces feature eables you to orgaize groups of widows ito multiple spaces (Figure 22). The, whe you work i a space, oly the widows that are part of that space appear oscree (Figure 23). Figure 22 I this example, I ve created four differet spaces. For example, while workig o a chapter of this book, I might have a space that icludes my IDesig chapter documet, Photoshop (which I use to edit screeshots), ad the three Fider widows that I use for the chapter s documets. I might also have aother space set up with Mail, ichat, ad Safari. I ca the quickly switch from my work space to my commuicatio space whe I eed to check or track dow someoe for a chat. Whe I wat to retur to work without distractios from those other applicatios, I ca quickly switch back to my work space. Settig up Spaces is pretty straightforward. After eablig the feature ad specifyig the umber ad layout of spaces that you wat, simply switch to a space ad start fillig it with widows. You ca also assig applicatios to specific spaces, esurig that they ope i the space you pla to use them i. You ca have up to 16 spaces ad access them several ways, icludig clickig, shortcut keys, or the Spaces meu. I this part of the chapter, I explai how to set up ad use the Spaces feature. Set the umber of spaces i the black box. To add a row or colum, click the + butto beside Rows or Colums. 7. To always switch to a space with ope widows for a applicatio you switch to, tur o the check box at the bottom of the Spaces pae. This keeps all of a applicatio s ope widows i the same space. 8. Click the Exposé & Spaces prefereces pae s close butto to save your settigs ad dismiss the widow. 4 Tips You ca cofigure Mac OS to have from 2 to 16 spaces. To chage the umber of spaces, you ca repeat these steps ad click the + or butto beside Rows or Colums to add or remove spaces. Or Press C with the umber key correspodig to the space you wat to view. For example, C2 displays space No. 2. To add widows to a space 1. Switch to the space you wat to add widows to. 2. Ope the widows you wat to add. Those widows become part of that space (Figure 28). 4 Tip If a widow belogs to a applicatio that is associated with a specific space, that widow will oly ope i that space. For example, if you set Preview to ope i space No. 2, whe you ope a Preview documet, it appears i space No. 2, o matter which space was ope whe you opeed the documet. Use the dialog to locate ad select the applicatio you wat to assig to a specific space. The click Add to add it to the Applicatio Assigmets list (Figure 31). 4. I the Space colum of the applicatio s lie i the Applicatio Assigmets list, use the pop-up meu (Figure 32) to choose the space you wat to assig the applicatio to. 5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each applicatio you wat to add. 4 Tips I step 4, the Every Space optio (Figure 32) allows the applicatio to display i ay space. Whe you associate a applicatio with a specific space, that applicatio ad its documet widows will oly ope i that space. If you wat a applicatio to ope i ay space, choose Every Space i step 4 or simply do ot add the applicatio to the Applicatio Assigmets list.
