ABOUT THE QUALIFICATION BSB51312 Diploma of Work Health and Safety requires the completion of 9 units of competency. There are 5 core (mandatory) units and 3 elective units of competency. 5 CORE UNITS OF COMPETENCY: BSBWHS502A Manage effective WHS consultation and participation processes BSBWHS506A Contribute to developing, implementing and maintaining WHS management systems BSBWHS503A Contribute to the systematic management of WHS risk BSBWHS504A Manage WHS hazards and risks (Complete the SAIG course: WHS Risk Management - 2 BSBWHS505A Investigate WHS incidents (Complete the SAIG course: Incident Investigation and Due Diligence) 4 ELECTIVE UNITS OF COMPETENCY: Elective 1: BSBWHS601A Apply legislative frameworks for WHS Elective 2: BSBWHS410A Contribute to work-related health and safety measures and initiatives (Complete the SAIG course Incident Investigation and Due Diligence) Elective 3: Contribute to managing WHS information systems Elective 4: BSBWHS509A Facilitate the development and use of hazardmanagement tools 1

2 WHS UNITS OF COMPETENCY ISSUED BY ANOTHER RTO Can I use other units of competency towards the qualification from another RTO? You may have already completed some of the core or elective units of competency in the qualification. SAI Global recognises all units of competency issued by other RTO s. Alternatively you may have completed relevant units of competency (e.g. OHS units of competency from the BSB60607 Advanced Diploma of OHS or BSB51307 Diploma of OHS) that can count towards the remaining elective unit of competency at Diploma level. QUALIFICATION PRE-REQUISITES AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS What are the entry requirements for the ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: 5 PRE-REQUISITE UNITS OF COMPETENCY: BSBWHS402A Assist with compliance with WHS laws How can I achieve the prerequisite units of competency for the BSBWHS403A Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS consultation and participation processes BSBWHS404A Contribute to WHS hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control BSBWHS405A Contribute to implementing and maintaining WHS management systems BSBWHS406A Assist with responding to incidents These units can be achieved either through credit transfer or through an RPL process. Why are there pre-requisite units of competency for the SAI Global must ensure that we comply with the requirements of the training package. The Diploma and the Advanced Diploma of Work Health and Safety have specific entry requirements. These two qualifications are unique as they have very strict rules for entry, including pre-requisite units of competency Are there entry requirements for each WHS course offered by SAI Global? There are no entry requirements for individual courses. But there ARE entry requirements if you want to achieve the full qualification. i.e. evidence of completion of the pre-requisite units of competency. But we do recommend that you are working in a WHS or OHS related role as there are post course assessment requirements that must be completed in a workplace environment. Which SAI Global courses count towards the HOW CAN I ACHIEVE THE QUALIFICATION? There are 3 programs that count towards achievement of BSB51312 Diploma of Work Health and Safety. These include; Course 1: WHS Risk Management Course 2: Implementing a WHS Management System Course 3: Incident Investigation and Due Diligence 2

3 HOW LONG DOES THE QUALIFICATION TAKE TO COMPLETE? How long does it take to complete the Why does the Diploma only 5 days to complete? 5 days face to face learning We have designed our Diploma qualification based on extensive industry consultation. Our clients wanted a modularised approach to the achievement of the qualification. The qualification takes 5 days for several reasons:. Clustered or Integrated Assessments Some training organisations train and assess each unit of competency separately. This can be frustrating and can lead to being over-assessed. Most SAIG assessments are based on clustered units of competency you will see at the end of the guide the relevant unit or units of competence that each assessment task is assessing. We also use the approach or clustered or integrated assessments. By clustering similar WHS units of competency together you can complete short amounts of face-to-face training. This means time away from work for you. The post course assessment requirements for each course will take between hours to complete based on your experience, skills and knowledge. The integrated assessment approach is outlined by your facilitator for each course. In class you are guided through to ensure you have a thorough understanding of the assessment requirements. This approach works best for people with current WHS or OHS experience who are able to complete the post course workplace assessment requirements. This approach does not work for everyone. Over what time frame should you complete your What are the recommended pathways following this program? POST COURSE ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS The post course assessment requirements for each course will take between hours to complete. Given that you must complete post course assessment tasks for all our WHS courses, it is best to space out your attendance and completion of the modules. We generally recommended you complete the courses over a period of 6-24 months this will vary based on your situation. POST COURSE QUALIFICATION PATHWAYS After achieving this qualification candidates may wish to complete the BSB60612 Advanced Diploma of Work Health and Safety or BSB51607 Diploma of Quality Auditing. Alternatively, candidates may seek to enrol in post graduate qualifications through a University. 3

4 LANGUAGE, LITERACY AND NUMERACY REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS QUALIFICATION What are the literacy requirements for this Candidates are required to have a suitable level of language and literacy to enable them to successfully participate in and complete the required course work and assessment requirements. This means candidates need to have effective language, communications and interpersonal skills and have the ability to write a range of documentation relevant to WHS and auditing. At Diploma level assessments will focus on the evidence of: Cognitive and communication skills to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources Cognitive, technical and communication skills to analyse, plan, design and evaluate approaches to unpredictable problems and/or management requirements Specialist technical and creative skills to express ideas and perspectives Communication skills to transfer knowledge and specialised skills to others and demonstrate understanding of knowledge We are able to adjust some assessment requirements on request. Please see our training Code of Practice and the Student Handbook on the SAI Global Website for further information WESTERN AUSTRALIAN AND VICTORIAN STUDENTS If the new WHS Act does not apply in my state (e.g. WA and VIC) does the new qualification still apply? The new WHS qualifications are nationally recognised. This means that the training package has been updated throughout Australia so is relevant in all states and territories. If I work in a company that has an OHS system not a WHS Management system (e.g. in WA or Victoria) will this affect the completion of the post course assessments? The assessments you are required to complete are based on the individual units of competency. If you are required to reference a WHS management system in your assessment as per the relevant unit or clustered units of competency, talk with your trainer about how this may affect your assessment. You may be required for example to reference the relevant WA or Victorian legislation. If the unit(s) of competency require demonstration of knowledge or skills in the WHS Model Act you may have to include these references in your assessment projects. 4

5 UPGRADING FROM BSB51307 DIPLOMA OF OHS TO Is BSB51307 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety qualification equivalent to BSB51312 Diploma in WHS How do I upgrade from BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety to the new BSB51312 Diploma of Work Health and Safety? What if I have previously done a unit of competency that has now been superseded? I was working towards BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety but the OHS units I completed have been superseded by WHS units, what should I do? BSB51312 DIPLOMA OF WHS The new qualification is NOT the equivalent of the old OHS qualification, BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety. There are new units of competency in the new BSB51312 Diploma of Work Health and Safety. The qualification; BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety was replaced by the new training package on 18 March Most qualifications through SAI Global allow flexibility for the student to select a number of electives from a range of qualifications and training packages. When this is the case, the packaging rules for all qualifications state that the elective units from other training packages must be from a current training package. This is a common question we get asked as new WHS qualifications were introduced in Training packages are updated regularly, usually every 5 years. If you have completed units that you thought would count towards a qualification but which are now superseded, i.e. have been replaced by newer units of competency (e.g. OHS units switched to WHS units on 18 March 2013), you can apply for credit transfer or RPL. Unfortunately there is nothing that SAI Global can do about this, but we do keep our information up-to-date on the website as we ensure that we always deliver the latest units of competency and qualifications to provide our students with up-to-date skills recognition. Please note fees apply; Refer to the SAI Global website in the Terms and Conditions; If you have already completed units and have a transcript or statements of attainment from either SAI Global or another RTO you can apply for credit transfer. You can also go to which lists all training packages and units of competency. This will show you which units you have are up to date or may have been superseded. What if I am halfway through my qualification and a qualification becomes superseded? This will not affect students currently enrolled in courses or who are still waiting to complete final assessments. However once 12 months past the endorsement date has passed the old units SAI Global is unable to issue the units of competency or the qualification. However there are provisions with ASQA for RTO s to issue qualifications and units of competency beyond the 12 month transition period. In this case SAI Global ensures that no students are disadvantaged during the transition period. We are able to issue qualifications beyond the 12 month period but this is done on a case-by-case basis so contact SAI Global customer service if this affects you. e.g. the transition from BSB51307 Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety to BSB51312 Diploma of Work Health and Safety 5
