2 Page 2 Curriculum/Elective Night for 6th & 7th Grades Parents of current 6th & 7th graders! Students will be signing up for courses soon for the school year. You are invited to attend Elective Night on Tuesday, January 26, from 5:15-5:45 pm in the Practice Gym. Elective teachers will have exhibits on display and will be able to answer questions. 6 Page 6 Drop Off/Pick Up Safety Procedures Welcome back to the spring semester. Below is a few reminders for drop off and pick up procedures to help make this process as smooth and safe as possible. Drop off and pick-up: Please be friendly, patient, and flexible when dropping off or picking-up your student at MMJH. There is always a large number of vehicles in car rider traffic. In order to handle the volume, we need parents to pull forward and not stop in front of the school when there is room to move forward. When you pull forward, it allows more students to get dropped off and picked up in a timely manner. This is especially important in the morning to ensure that students can arrive and get to class on time. Unless there is heavy rain (not a drizzle), we need all cars to pull forward. Also in the morning, please do not stop short and drop off band or orchestra students in front of the band entrance but move forward up the line to help keep traffic flowing. Once you turn onto school property in the front, there are two lanes. The one on the right is for dropping off students. As you approach the drop off area, please follow staff directions to move as far down the lane as possible to help alleviate congestion and allow us to unload students in a safe, timely manner. Students should only exit the vehicle out the door closest to the sidewalk. We have had several near misses with students exiting to the left into the left hand lane and moving vehicles. Please do not use the lane on the left to drop off students or to pull into a parking space to drop off your student. The left lane is for staff and visitor parking and having your student cross the two lanes of moving traffic is a safety hazard. Please do not drop off or pick up students on Westheimer Parkway, the teacher parking lot, or the bus loading/ unloading area as this constitutes another safety hazard for students. Please be aware that it is illegal to turn left into the front parking lot across traffic from the hours of 7:00-8:00 am and 2:00-3:00 pm on school days. Students should be dropped off after 7:00 am and before 7:25 am and picked-up by 2:50 in the afternoon. We do not have supervision for students before and after these times. Continual tardiness may result in a student either riding the bus, if eligible, or walking home. Buses: Please access katyisd.org to check for bus eligibility and route information. If your student rides the bus, please be out at your stop a few minutes early. Because of the limited number and crowding of buses, notes for a temporary change in transportation will be approved on an emergency basis only by a member of the administrative team. Students wanting to go home with a friend must turn in a note from the parent to the front office no later than the morning of the day wanting to travel. We need this time to confirm the request and inform the bus driver of the guest on their bus. Because of the constant crowding of some of the busses, this request may be declined. Walkers and riders: Students need to be careful walking and riding their bikes to and from school. The beginning of school each semester means increased traffic and more cars in the area. MMJH encourages students to walk or ride in groups for safety. If driving in the area, please be attentive for students coming to and going from the school. Please be aware that skateboards, hover boards, roller skates, heelies, and scooters are not allowed on school property. Thank you very much for your cooperation in assisting us in keeping all MMJH students safe.

7 Page 7 Let Your Child Take Over Some School Tasks Your middle schooler won t morph into a responsible young adult overnight. But she may not morph into one at all if you continue doing everything for her! Now that she s in middle school, your child is capable of taking responsibility for: Packing her lunch. Making a sandwich isn t rocket science. So give her a lesson in how to load up her lunch box. Lay down some basic rules about what s OK or not OK to pack, and insist she prepares her lunch the night before school. Waking up on time. Show your child how to set an alarm clock. In the morning, let the alarm wake her up, but act as her backup alarm until she gets the hang of it. If she s too quick to hit snooze and doze off again, place the clock across the room from her bed so she ll have to get up to turn it off. Getting forms signed. Don t go through her backpack searching for papers that need your signature. Getting them signed is her responsibility, so let her bring them to you. February 2016 Classroom Library Book Drive The Bobcat Library is asking for your help in donating gently used paperback and hardback books to help build our classroom libraries. Students can read these books during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) as well as after they have completed their schoolwork. To accommodate our students diverse reading levels, we will be accepting books that are appropriate for grades 3-8. There will be two drop-off locations one in the front office and the other in the library. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Alidon in the library. Thank you in advance for your support! Read It Forward This year s Read It Forward (RIF) book is The Great Greene Heist by Varian Johnson, one of the 2015 Texas Lone Star reading books. If you are not familiar with this reading program, here is the scoop: One hundred paperback copies of our RIF book will be placed randomly around school. Last week Mrs. Alidon met with the reading classes to launch the program and gave away copies for each class. The remaining copies were dropped or placed in various spots on campus. Some were in the cafeteria, hallway, office, and even some classrooms. If students find a RIF book, they can pick it up, give it a read, and forward it to the next person to enjoy! Not your thing? Then simply find someone to pass the book to who will enjoy reading it. These are not library books, so please do not return them to the library! After students finish reading the book, they can sign the inside front cover, forward it on the next person to read the story, and come to the library to sign an I read the RIF book emblem. The library staff will add their name to a roster of students who will have the opportunity to meet the author, who will be visiting our school on Tuesday, February 23, in the library (new date). This is an incredible opportunity for our students! Please note that students do not have to read a copy of the RIF book that they find around the school. If some students can t find a copy lying around campus, they can check out a copy from our school library or the public library. 8 Page 8 MMJH 10K Reading Challenge The MMJH 10 K Reading Challenge is growing! Have you accepted this challenge? We have over 70 students who have received prizes so far! Here are the guidelines: *Students can record the pages in the book they are currently reading and all future books they read this school year. The books they have read during the 1st six weeks will not be counted. * When a student have finished reading a book, they will ask their advisory teacher to initial their reading log. *When a student reaches a reading goal, he can go to the library to pick up his prize. * Extra reading logs will be in the ELA teachers' classrooms, the library, & Canvas. Student ipad Checkout Information Katy ISD is excited to provide the opportunity for our students to take home a digital device for learning. A student can check out an ipad to use for a school assignment for a one week period, excluding the Winter and Spring Breaks. The student s parent or legal guardian must first meet with the assistant principal to review the KISD Student/Parent Equipment Use Agreement and sign it along with the student.
