1 BOARD OF EDUCATION Attachment: Discussion 10 PALO ALTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Date: TO: FROM: SUBJECT: Glenn Max McGee, Superintendent Bob Golton, Bond Program Manager Submittal of Plans to Division of State Architect (DSA) for the Gunn Central Building Project STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE Budget Trends and Infrastructure RECOMMENDATION It is recommended the Board authorize staff to submit the plans for the Central Building project at to the Division of the State Architect for approval. BACKGROUND On March 11, 2014, the Board of Education approved the revised conceptual design for the Central Building project at. Schematic design plans were initially reviewed and approved by the Board on June 17, Subsequently, on January 13, 2015, the Board approved a program change and revised schematic design that incorporated a full Wellness Center into the project. On June 17, 2015, the Board approved a second addendum and program change to the project that incorporated adding HVAC and fire alarm upgrades to the Spangenberg Theater. This was recommended so that the improvements could be done in conjunction with those associated with the addition. DLM has since completed design development and construction documents for the project, and is prepared to submit these plans to DSA for review and approval. The project will provide updated and expanded space for the music and choral programs as part of an addition to Spangenberg Theater, and will also improve the lobby and restroom facilities in the building. In addition, the project will include a new, two story building in place of the old library in the center of campus. The building will house five new classrooms for Media Arts and Social Sciences programs, new facilities for Student Activities, and a Wellness Center on the second floor. The Wellness Center will include a nurse s office, guidance and counseling offices, ACS and psychologist offices around a core of support spaces. The project has not experienced any significant changes since the Board reviewed the project in June. DLM and staff have reviewed the plans with project stakeholders, and have provided comments to add another counseling office, floor mounted power, blackout shades in the choral room, and unisex toilets in the two story building. The project budget remains at $21,084,277, as approved at the June 17, 2015, meeting.

2 The plans will be submitted to DSA in early February, and their review and approval is anticipated to take up from seven to nine months, which includes making corrections and resubmitting for backcheck. Once approved, staff will commence bidding of the project. Staff is also making provisions to relocate the current occupants of the old library and music buildings to other parts of the campus once classes end on June 3, Staff is also working with DLM and IT to relocate the MDF currently housed in the old library to Building E, so the campus data network can remain functioning during construction with minimal interruptions. Due to the impact of construction on Spangenberg Theater, the facility will be shut down for approximately one year, while the lobby expansion, restrooms, HVAC and fire alarm systems are being updated. The Little Theater on the north side of the building will remain in service for drama classes and other uses. PROPOSAL It is proposed the Board authorize staff to submit the plans for the Central Building project at Gunn High School to the Division of the State Architect for approval. FISCAL IMPACT The project will be funded with Strong Schools Bond funds from the Central Building project fund.
