4 ACTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DUNCANVILLE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Project Introduction Acton Elementary School is an existing facility that was planned for replacement as part of the November 4, 2014 bond package. The new campus, which will serve grades PK-5, will be located adjacent to Kennemer Middle School in a two-story building. The student population from the current location will be relocated to the new campus. Acton Elementary will also accommodate fifth graders in its second year of operation. The new Acton campus will provide the following: Classrooms for PK-5th grades, including additional classrooms for future growth Cafeteria/dining with stage Full service kitchen Computer labs Shared activity centers for each grade level Controlled entry vestibule Two playgrounds; one serving Pre-K and Kindergarten, and one serving upper grades Courtyard/outdoor learning space from the library Site Circulation Acton Elementary School will be built on property owned by the district, adjacent to Kennemer Middle School. Access to Acton will be from Wheatland Rd. and Clark Road. The main entrance is off Wheatland Road, and serves as the parent drop off and pick up loop. This drive utilizes the existing Kennemer staff entrance. Start and end times for each campus are staggered, so the traffic will not overlap during peak times. Visitor parking (33 spaces) will be provided at this main entrance. The bus loop and staff parking (approximately 81 spaces) is accessed from Clark Road, and this entrance will be dedicated for Acton use. Service and delivery access will also enter from Clark Road, and this drive will provide sufficient stacking for the busses. This entrance will have a gate that can be locked after hours, to control access to the site. Building Design The building is situated to take advantage of natural daylight. Classrooms will have windows at the north-south direction, which provide the best daylight. Due to the limited buildable area of the site, Acton will be a twostory campus. First floor contains all of the common areas: gym, library, cafeteria, administration, and resource rooms. Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade are also located on the first floor, with access to their own playground. These Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms have their own restroom within each classroom. The second floor contains grades 2-5, computer lab, and staff workrooms. The floor plan is organized in pods, or clusters, with each grade level centered around an activity center. Each grade level will have 5 classrooms and their own activity center. This open activity area is slightly larger than a classroom, and will allow students to gather together in larger numbers for collaboration. Each grade level will also have their own staff workroom and storage areas. These pods are visually expressed at the exterior, with a volume that projects from the wall. This provides visual interest and allows for a variation of daylight into the classrooms and the shared activity areas. Main corridors will have clerestory windows at the second level. The library is at the center of the campus, and is a two story volume offering plenty of natural daylight and views. Both levels of the building will have a computer lab, which will look into the library. Adjacent to the library is an opportunity for an outdoor learning environment and courtyard area. This space will be sheltered from the roads, and will not be adjacent to vehicular traffic. The proposed bus loop will be utilized to accommodate both busses and day care shuttles. The cafeteria and gym will both provide areas for staging students in mornings and afternoons. Located between the gym and cafeteria is another entrance lobby. This entry will be used for afterhours events and meetings to provide easy access to the gym, library, and cafeteria. NARRATIVE Acton Elementary School, Duncanville Independent School District 3
