4 NEW SHIRLEY HALL MIDDLE SCHOOL & JOE M. TISON MIDDLE SCHOOL ADDITIONS & RENOVATION WEATHERFORD INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT Project Overview The new Shirley Hall middle school and the addition to Joe M. Tison middle school are designed to provide added student capacity up to 1,100 students at each campus. This is necessary to allow for the projected growth in the district as well as to realign them to serve grades 6 8. Adding sixth graders at the middle schools will provide much-needed reductions of the student populations at all of the elementary schools and will eliminate the need for portable classrooms that are necessary to serve this population today. Shirley Hall Middle School The new school will be built on the western portion of the existing campus. Construction of the new school can commence with limited disruption to the existing school until it opens in August The school main entrance will change from Charles Street to S Bowie Drive. New practice fields and parking will be provided on the eastern side of the campus when the existing school is demolished over the summer in The new design will allow for the following: General classrooms to serve grades 6, 7, & 8 arranged in neighborhoods by grade level Science and Computer Labs at each grade level neighborhood Student collaboration spaces Collective teacher offices at central locations into each grade level neighborhood Cafeteria with stage that connects to the theater classroom An open, modern Library / Media Center Band and Choir suites with shared support spaces Two art rooms with shared support spaces and a Kiln room A new completion gymnasium and weight room with support spaces Administrative suite Protected Courtyards / Outdoor Learning Spaces between grade level neighborhoods A New Track and refurbished Competition Field that will include New Seating for 750 spectators Energy-efficient building envelope, mechanical, and electrical systems throughout The existing free-standing Competition Gymnasium will be incorporated into the new building Site Circulation The project site is bound by the existing track and field and High School Softball Field to the north, Charles Street to the east, the District Services and the Technology / Athletics Buildings to the south, and S. Bowie Drive to the west. Vehicular traffic will enter on the south end of the site off S. Bowie Drive near the main entrance to the building, with busses entering from the north end of the site off S. Bowie Drive near the cafeteria. The special education services will have a separate entrance for ease of access directly to the classroom from the bus loop. Parking will be dispersed on all sides of the new school, and several of the existing parking lots will remain and be incorporated to reduce construction costs. This will provide convenient access to the fine arts, athletics, cafeteria, and athletic fields. Building Design The design of Shirley Hall Middle School is intended to deliver a flexible and efficient environment that will provide multiple opportunities for learning from the moment that someone enters the site. The building and site respond to the District s vision for curriculum practices in the twenty-first century which anticipates the needs and methods in the future. The siting of the new single-story building is in response to the location of the existing school building, competition gymnasium, and competition track and field, and will allow for limited disruption during construction. The administration area located on the southern end of the building will provide increased visibility of incoming visitors which will enter the building through a controlled entry that directs all traffic into the reception area in the office. Extending north of the administration area, are three grade level neighborhoods designed with a collective teacher space at the entry to the neighborhood that will increase campus security and ease of student access to tutorial and collaborative learning activities. These teacher spaces will be surrounded on all sides by storefront glazing for sightlines to the main corridor, or spine of the building, and will bookend a student collaboration space between them and the computer labs which will also be open by glazing on three sides. This will create a lively, open learning environment at the heart of each neighborhood. Classrooms are positioned to provide exterior views and natural lighting along the sides of each grade level neighborhood. This orientation in the building plan will create opportunities for outdoor learning environments between neighborhoods that will be readily accessible, and highly visible from the surrounding classrooms. The library / media center will be open to the corridor to provide a hub for learning in a modern collaborative environment. And will act as the heart of the building between the grade level neighborhoods and the fine arts and athletic spaces on the northern end of the building. This orientation will allow these portions of the building to be secured from the remainder of the school during after-hours functions and events. Athletic spaces are located together on the northeast portion of the building for easy access to parking and athletic fields to the east and north. Rooms throughout the building will take advantage of natural light through exterior windows, clerestories, and borrowed light at interior spaces. The layout of the building creates opportunities for different learning and teaching styles, and provides exceptional supervision to all areas. Efficiency in circulation and building performance, adaptability and maximum utilization of spaces, and durable and easy to maintain systems and materials are significant considerations in the design of the new Shirley Hall middle school.
