2 Cover Story How does the whole stock exchange process work? There is a matchmaking engine (software) which will identify the buyer and seller based on price and quantity. For example, let s say you want to buy 1000 stocks of Tata Motors, there could be 3 people holding 300, 200 and 500 respectively who want to sell. This is matched and allocated to the prospective buyer. Settlement and clearing algorithm will deduct money and allocate the stocks. Usually, the settlement should be done within 3 days in case of shortage of funds. There is Clearing House which maintains the grand total of all stocks traded in the stock exchange. Are you saying that one software holds all the information about what stocks individuals hold? No, the clearing house keeps the brokers total and the broker in turn keeps the individual holdings. For example, Clearing House will record that Karvy has 200,000 stocks of Tata Motors and in turn Karvy will have the data about the individual s details who hold the 200,000 stocks. In India, money seems to be a major and sometimes the only motivation factor for a job. Many a times, I have noticed that people want to get promoted as soon as they finish 3 years, whether they are ready for the role or not. It seems like they are on a schedule for promotion or a pay raise. In the USfor example, people could remain an Analyst all their life without becoming a Manager. In India, it seems like it is all about the Job Title / Designation and commercial mindset without investing in what it takes to achieve the goals. What do you think of fresher in India? Without stereotyping, I must say we have a lot of issues when hiring people from India. We call people for an interview and fix an appointment, but they don t show up. We give them an offer letter, they accept it and eventually don t show up on the first day of work. Later we find out that he/she has joined another company. This is lack of basic courtesy and it impairs personal reputation and integrity, which are vital qualities for an individual when working in MNCs. Advice to youngsters? I was surprised to hear that there is a 40% vacancy in IIT faculty. This could because of the commercial mindset we spoke about. People should do what they are passionate about and pursue their dreams. If someone is interested in teaching, they should and I am positive they will excel in it. My son is doing his PhD in Number Theory and wants to get into teaching. He had 3 job offers from Wall Street firms with a starting salary of $70,000, but he refused them all to pursue his PhD. 4 Local Cover Story Kudos to Ancient Indian Science By Jai Kumar ART EXHIBITION from Mon-Sat for Charity Indian Community Welfare Organisation As part of its fund raising events, Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO) inaugurated an art gallery on its office premises in Anna Nagar West on Wednesday, to help the marginalised children in the city. The gallery houses works of 18 renowned artists, like Vandhana Jain, Henry Daniel, Pannerselvam, Premalatha Seshadri to mention a few. The funds raised through the sale of these art works will be deposited in the bank and the interests will be utilised to support children who are homeless, HIV+ve, or survivors of human trafficking. We wanted to do something to mobilise a sustainable income for years to come, said A J Hariharan, secretary, ICWO. This exhibition and sale is going to be on throughout the year. Once all the works are sold, we have artists ready to refill the collection for us, he added. Each artist has given four paintings to the gallery.
