It reflects changes recmmended by the training cmmittee at their mst recent meeting and is effective immediately. It will be updated n the State website at the first available pprtunity. Cntinuing Medical Educatin fr EMTs in Alaska The purpse f this page is t prvide the reader with infrmatin cncerning the applicability f time spent studying certain subjects twards the cntinuing medical educatin (CME) requirements fr recertificatin as an Emergency Medical Technician in Alaska. Other certifying agencies such as the Natinal Registry may have different r mre stringent requirements fr verificatin and number f hurs. In additin, the page includes infrmatin n the prcess fr "pre apprving" cntinuing medical educatin prgrams. The requirements fr EMT I, EMT 2 and EMT 3 recertificatin can be fund n the dwnladable applicatin fr recertificatin. "Cntinuing Medical Educatin" (CME) is defined in Alaska EMS Regulatins. Plicies regarding the apprval f cntinuing medical educatin are nrmally develped by the State EMS Training Cmmittee, a subcmmittee f the Gvernr's Alaska Cuncil n Emergency Medical Services. The plicies are based n the definitin f cntinuing medical educatin fund in 7 AAC (12). The Physician Medical Directr fr a certified EMS service, EMT 2 s, r EMT 3 s, is respnsible fr a plan f cntinuing medical educatin fr each f the persns he r she spnsrs, and shuld be cnsulted early in the CME planning prcess. Definitin f Cntinuing Medical Educatin: 7 AAC (12) "cntinuing medical educatin" means instructin in tpics included in the training curse curriculum fr EMT Is, EMT IIs, r EMT IIIs, that may be presented using critiques, didactic sessins, practical drills, wrkshps, seminars, r ther department apprved means; additinal tpics fr cntinuing medical educatin include: air medical emergency care, athletic injuries, battered spuses, child abuse, cmmunicatins, crime scene respnse, disabled adults, electrical hazards, 1

2 explsin injuries, extricatin, medical terminlgy, farm machinery injuries, hazardus materials, incident management industrial injuries, infectius diseases, injury preventin, medic legal aspects, nenatal care/sudden infant death syndrme (SIDS), prtective breathing apparatus, radiactive materials, rape interventin, rappelling, sea survival, hyperbaric medicine, r special rescue (e.g. aerial, diving, muntain, search). Limitatins: This page is intended t prvide infrmatin t emergency medical services persnnel and thse wh ffer cntinuing medical educatin (CME) abut the plicies in Alaska regarding CME and the prcesses fr vluntary pre apprval f CME. Nte that this plicy applies t EMT I, EMT 2and EMT 3 persnnel in Alaska nly. Cntinuing Medical Educatin plicies fr Mbile Intensive Care Paramedics are the respnsibility f the Alaska State Medical Bard. Dcumentatin f Cntinuing Medical Educatin: The number f hurs, fr each ffering, must be verified by the Fire r EMS Chief, Service EMS Crdinatr, Medical Directr, Training Officer, Instructr, r Agency prviding the CME credits. Dcumentatin shuld be submitted with the apprpriate applicatin fr recertificatin and shuld include the fllwing infrmatin: Name f the Participant; Subject f the CME; Level f the CME Prvided (EMT 1, EMT 2, etc.); Number f Hurs Awarded Accreditatin authrity (if applicable) Cardipulmnary Resuscitatin: A valid CPR credential is required fr recertificatin. Plicy n "Self Study" CME: Self study CME includes accredited nline CME Training, as well as EMS related DVDs and magazines. Cntinuing Medical Educatin credit fr apprved self study prgrams may be applied twards recertificatin as an Alaska EMT 1, 2, r 3. The number f hurs, fr each ffering, must be verified by the Fire r EMS Chief, Service EMS Crdinatr, Medical Directr, Training Officer, r agency prviding the CME credits. Frty eight hurs may be applied twards EMT 1, EMT 2, r EMT 3 recertificatin. Examples f accredited nline/web based CME include the Cntinuing Educatin Crdinating Bard fr Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS), American Medical Assciatin (AMA), American Nurses Credentialing Center (AACN), The Internatinal Assciatin fr Cntinuing Educatin and Training (IACET), etc. CME fr Serving as an Examinatin Prctr, Simulated Patient r Certifying Officer: 3

4 An individual wh has served as an EMT examinatin prctr, simulated patient and/r Certifying Officer may receive up t 12 hurs f CME per certificatin perid fr these activities. Credit is awarded n an hur fr hur basis and is determined by adding the number f hurs served each in these rles and applying the ttal r 12, whichever is lwer, t the CME requirement. Questins regarding CME can be directed t yur nearest Reginal EMS Office r the State EMS Unit. Instructr Activity: Each recertificatin perid, an EMT 1 Instructr, EMT 2 Instructr r EMT 3 Instructr may apply up t 24 hurs f instructin the instructr has prvided at the EMT I, 2, r 3 level t his r her EMT 1, 2, r 3 recertificatin requirements. The instructr may nt, hwever, check ff his r her wn skills. This must be dne by anther department apprved instructr. Preceptrship Prgrams: Up t 12 hurs f cntinuing medical educatin per certificatin perid may be awarded fr clinical r EMS based preceptrship prgrams including health aide r CHP preceptrship prgrams. Credit may be awarded t either the precept r preceptr. Physician Mderated Run Reviews: Participatin in physician cnducted run reviews can be used tward the cntinuing medical educatin requirements fr EMTs. Yu may claim ne hur fr every hur actually spent in run reviews, up t 4 hurs in a tw year certificatin cycle. Specific CME Training Prgrams: The fllwing curses have been pre apprved fr cntinuing medical educatin n an hur fr hur basis up t the assigned maximum. Curses which are nt n this list may still be apprved by the Sectin f Emergency Prgrams prvided that the curse is jb related and prper dcumentatin is prvided. If yu take the same curse twice, such as a CPR prvider curse, it can be applied nly nce t yur CME requirements. Except fr curses specified belw, a single cntinuing medical educatin curse may nt be applied t satisfy mre than hurs fr the CME requirement fr recertificatin. The department will permit a single CME curse t be applied t satisfy mre than hurs n a curse by curse basis if the department determines that the nature and extent f the curse cntent warrants a greater number f hurs [7AAC (k)]. As a general rule, successfully cmpleted cllege curses such as anatmy and physilgy and thers which are peripherally related t EMS can be cunted t a maximum f 12 hurs/curse with a 2 curse/cycle maximum. 4

The fllwing are examples f valid CME fr air medical persnnel under this regulatin: In services n equipment; "Run reviews" f air medical respnses; Training listed in as part f an air medical training prgram as defined in 7 AAC ; and Lecture, demnstratins, and skills sessins related specifically t medical care in the air medical envirnment. Typical cntinuing medical pprtunities, such as BTLS and ACLS, d nt cunt twards the CME requirement f 7 AAC (c) unless the cntent is geared specifically fr use in the air medical envirnment. Pre Apprval f CME Prgrams:

9 Althugh there is n requirement fr cntinuing medical educatin t be pre apprved by the Sectin f Emergency Prgrams, it is ften in the best interests f the persn r rganizatin ffering the CME t d s. Pre apprval allws the individual r rganizatin ffering t have a clear idea f the number f CME hurs which will be accepted by the Sectin fr EMT 1, EMT 2 and EMT 3 certificatin. This infrmatin is valuable when marketing the CME prgram. Requests fr pre apprval f CME prgrams shuld be directed t: CME Prgram Apprval Sectin f Emergency Prgrams Department f Health and Scial Services Bx 1106 Juneau, AK Requests fr pre apprval f CME prgrams can take frm several days t several weeks depending n the cmplexity f the ffering. Apprval requests shuld include: An verview f the prgram and its relatinship t the rle f emergency medical services persnnel; a schedule which breaks the curse dwn int blcks f n mre than fur hurs; an agreement t issue verificatin f participatin/curse cmpletin which includes the infrmatin listed in the dcumentatin sectin abve; and evidence that the instructr is a subject matter expert in the prgram's cntent. The Sectin f Emergency Prgrams may seek recmmendatins frm Reginal EMS Office staff, and thers, regarding the CME apprval request. In additin, the Sectin may request additinal infrmatin, such as learning bjectives, t assist in its review. 9
