During this change, physicians and other healthcare providers are left in a transitional period in which they must maintain volumes while focusing on quality, cost and outcomes. Data transparency, patient satisfaction, rising deductibles, meaningful use, PQRS, provider consolidation, the repeal of SGR, the rise of ACOS and many other factors are dramatically altering healthcare delivery. Understanding the trends, what is on the horizon and how best to manage in this grey zone between volume and value is integral to long term viability. This session will provide an overview of the evolution of new reimbursement models and offer strategies and considerations for success. 9:15am 10:30am Building Blocks and Breaking Blocks: how mergers of hospitals and physician groups, and the resulting breakups, have impacted the practice of medicine and how practice administrators do their jobs. - Steven M. Harris, Partner, McDonald Hopkins LLC Hundreds of thousands of physician groups merged into hospitals and health systems in the last 10 years. This has changed not only the practice of medicine, but also the role of the medical group manager. This session will explain the economic and political forces that caused the trend, explain the different ways that groups and hospitals have built new structures, and best ways to approach the new structure during the building period from legal and operational standpoints. It will address what physicians are looking for out of the new structure, including ways to secure what you are asking for in a prenuptial agreement of sorts. It will also address the recent break up trend, in which the groups and individual physicians are un-attaching themselves from the system, and provide tips on how to address medical records, EMRs, non-competes and real estate upon break-up. It will also explain some creative ways to build and break-up. Other industries have gone through this already from manufacturing (American Auto Industry) to services (Banking) to government (IRS). In all of these areas they have looked to many tools to accelerate the transition, but universally the concepts of Lean Six Sigma have been applied. In short, Lean Six Sigma is a

3 scientific approach to performance management and quality improvement. It takes an approach (the scientific method) along with a tested toolset (Lean Six Sigma) and addresses the efficiency and effectiveness of our processes. Williams Provider Relations Senior Analyst, Provider Outreach & Education, CGS Administrators, LLC Jurisdiction 15 MAC - Kentucky / Ohio Medicare Part B Vanessa Williams is a Provider Relations Senior Analyst going into her 25th year with the Ohio Medicare program. She has held several positions throughout her years of service with Medicare, from claims examiner to supervisor in the Provider Call Center to district manager for Ohio. Laura Gipson, MBA External Business Relations, Ombudsman MBA University of Akron with a focus on management and organizational development. My career began 22 years with the State of Ohio in the Office of Child Support. The last 12 years have been with the Ohio Department of Medicaid in External Business Relations. I reside in New Albany Ohio but enjoy traveling throughout Ohio providing Medicaid updates and guidance to the provider community. 4 Conference Speakers (continued) Tawnya Bosko, MHA, MSHL, MS Vice President, The Camden Group Ms. Bosko is a Vice President with The Camden Group and has over twenty years of experience in healthcare administration and management. She specializes in quality, value and transparency, reimbursement and incentive model methodologies, payer strategy and medical group and hospital performance optimization. Before joining The Camden Group, Ms. Bosko served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Western Reserve Health System, a physician-hospital organization (PHO) in northeast Ohio as well as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Unity Health Network, the organizations affiliated multi-specialty medical group, and of Premiere Medical Resources, the organizations management services organization. Prior to this role, Ms. Bosko led provider relations and network contracting for the PHO affiliated with Summa Health System. She has additional experience in the health insurance industry, where she has overseen underwriting for health and life insurance products. Ms. Bosko was a member of the steering committee for development of the master s in business administration in healthcare management program at Kent State University and has served as an adjunct instructor for the economics of healthcare and managerial economics for healthcare managers courses. Her articles on performance optimization, quality and price transparency, reimbursement and incentive models have been published by the Healthcare Financial Management Association, Healthcare Compliance Association, The Governance Institute, American Medical Group Association and others. She has spoken extensively on these topics at the national level for trade associations such as the Medical Group Management Association and The Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development as well as for industry leading institutions such as The Cleveland Clinic and The Doctors Company. Ms. Bosko holds a master s degree in healthcare administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master s degree in applied economics from Georgia Southern University, a master s degree in health law from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law School, and a bachelor s degree from Kent State University. She is currently completing her doctorate in healthcare administration at the Medical University of South Carolina where her research focuses on effective reimbursement and incentive models in healthcare. Christopher Powers Director, System and Process Improvement Summa Health System Chris Powers, the System Director of Process Improvement at Summa Health System, is responsible for facilitating system and process improvement efforts to optimize the organization s underlying processes to achieve more efficient results. His educational background is in communications, group dynamics, and management. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from John Carroll University and currently serves as adjunct faculty for the executive Masters of Business Administration program at Kent State University. He has an extensive background in business management and organizational improvement and is an experienced leader in a number of industries: healthcare, information technology, corporate and retail banking, legal, procurement, mortgage services, and human resources. Some of his past roles include Senior Project Manager at Cleveland Clinic and Transformation Manager at National City Corporation. He also holds a Master Black Belt in Six Sigma and leads teams in change management, organizational transformation, team facilitation, and application of both Lean and Six Sigma methodologies. During his time at Summa, he has trained over 900 employees in Six Sigma and completed numerous Lean/Six Sigma projects. In addition, his military career consists of active duty service as a Field Artillery Officer and Captain in the 2nd Armored Division of the United States Army in Fort Hood, Texas. While in this role, he received an Army Commendation Medal for his work executing training events along with two Army Achievement Medals for performance and developing operating procedures for a new weapon system. He returned to NE Ohio after his service and has been here for 17 years. Currently he lives in Stow with his wife Sue, two daughters, Allison and Lauren and his dog, Kyla. Chris enjoys spending time with his family and orienteering. Steven M. Harris, Partner McDonald Hopkins LLC Steve has a national reputation as an advisor to business and professional organizations, counsels privately and publicly owned corporations and healthcare clients on contractual and regulatory issues, succession planning, and related transactional matters. He represents clients in acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and contract disputes. Steve also commits substantial time educating the medical profession on business and regulatory matters. Presentations include the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the University of Chicago Hospital, the American Dental Association and Illinois Medical Group Management Association (ILMGMA). His medical-legal columns appear in ENT Today, the Hospitalist and the Rheumatologist. Steve has been quoted in various national publications on healthcare matters including the New York Times.
