3 Educational Sessions General Session # 1 Georgette Gustin Communication Connection Ms. Gustin will address how various approaches to communication can have either a positive or negative impact. Coders often wear many hats working as educators for their facility or organization. Understanding how to deliver the message, influence behavior changes and develop a collaborative team approach with physicians is critical. Get pumped up for our conference with this lively, motivating session! General Session #2 - James Staudenmeier, M.D. Stress Break for Coders Picture this..a psychiatrist comes to talk with two hundred coders to explore and understand the complexities of coding and documentation. Stress!!! Dr. Staudenmeier will explain how stress affects relationships, including the professional relationship between doctor and coder. At the conclusion of his session he will demonstrate relaxation techniques and encourage audience participation. Breakout Session 3A - Deborah Grider Hospital Documentation Coding Dilemmas This session will cover the physician s documentation of hospital services along with the importance of diagnosis coding for the hospital facility. Ms. Grider will review E/M requirements for hospital physician documentation along with simple forms physicians can use to help with documentation. Breakout Session 4A - Terry Fletcher Peripheral Cardiology This session will help the coder understand the selective catheterization process. Learn how to code first, second and third order angiographies and understand the cross-over from coronary to non-coronary procedures. Ms. Fletcher will explore PTCA s vs. PTA s and stent placements, both coronary and noncoronary. She ll be using an actual case study so be sure to bring your coding books! Breakout Session 5A - Sheri Bernard The Eyes Have It This session will provide an overview of eyeball anatomy followed by a hands-on laboratory session. Attendees will have the opportunity to dissect a cow eyeball, thereby understanding first-hand the structures involved in surgeries or disease processes. This popular class was sold out at the recent AAPC conference and space will be limited to 50 attendees.
4 Breakout Session 6A - Steven Arter Keeping a Finger on the Pulse of Your Practice Medical practices are simply not run like traditional businesses. The standard tools and measurements for analyzing success or profitability are different, and historically have only been available through highpriced accounting or consulting firms. Software is now available which can determine cost per procedure, such as the actual expense involved in providing an E/M visit or minor surgery procedure. Fee schedules can be analyzed and E/M profiles or code distribution can be reviewed daily. Mr. Arter will demonstrate some of these tools in an eye-opening look at practice management software solutions. Breakout Session 7A - Alan Britten, M.D. Pediatric Intensive Care This session will provide a physician s view of pediatric emergency and intensive care situations. Dr. Britten will discuss bedside pediatric intensive care and will also explain some emergency procedures which are performed on the pediatric patient. The use of unique pediatric CPT and ICD-9 codes will be discussed. Dr. Britten will also share some interesting experiences from his pediatric anesthesia practice. Breakout Session 8A - Georgette Gustin Sticks and Stones Can Hurt Your Bones, and the Words You Say Can Hurt You During this session, Ms. Gustin will share some tricks of the trade for improving communication between coders, physicians and administrators. To maintain compliance and a productive work environment, coders must be open to ideas which they may incorporate into training and education. Attendees will enjoy this lively, interactive session. Breakout Session 9A - Deborah Grider Is Your Documentation of Critical Care at the Critical End? Unsure about when and how to use critical care codes? Discover how to report both the diagnosis and procedure(s) performed for critical care or intensivist services correctly. You ll understand the importance of using modifiers, how to identify critical care coding situations and also learn the key points for documentation of critical or intensive care codes. Breakout Session 10A - Jim Staudenmeier, M.D. Making Sense of Psychiatric Documentation Documentation in psychiatry can vary depending on the types of mental health services provided. Psychiatrists often provide cryptic notes and unintelligible diagnosis and treatment plans. None-the-less, good coding is the key to accurate and appropriate reimbursements or data collection such as workload credit. This session will cover some of the critical areas that must be documented in the psychiatric medical record that will help to facilitate accurate coding. Some common psychiatric diagnostic categories and procedures will be covered and attendees will get to sharpen their skills by coding a psychiatric chart note.
