SCHOLARSHIPS AT RUGBY Scholars are central to everything we do and stand for at Rugby. They play a crucial role in practising, demonstrating and promoting the values which are a vital component in making Rugby an outstanding school. They are challenged by other exceptional pupils and staff and benefit from the experience. We provide our Scholars with expertise, dedication and care and, in return, we expect a great deal from them. We want them to emerge as young men and woman who will match or exceed our expectations. They will be an inspiration to the School community, but behave with modesty. We are a proud school, but not an arrogant one. If you are someone who would enjoy the challenge of playing a leading role in the scholarly community of Rugby School, then please consider applying for one of our. As well as proven excellence and clear potential in your area of specialism, we are looking for pupils who will help to set the standards to which others aspire. We welcome academics who appreciate the importance of the arts; top-class sportsmen and women who lead on the field and in the classroom; musicians who enjoy the challenge of debate and discussion. And everyone should enjoy and contribute to the richness of life in a boarding house. If you are excited at the prospect of pursuing academic interests with brilliant teachers, many of whom are published authors and leading researchers; studying music with internationally renowned performers; or of being coached in sports by those who have played at the highest level, then Rugby School is the place for you. Please have a look at the details in this brochure and I hope you will find a Scholarship that suits you. Further information can be found on our website in the Admissions section. Peter Green Head Master 1

ACADEMIC Academic Scholars at Rugby are encouraged to be the modest stars in the School s intellectual firmament and to make a significant contribution to the academic ethos of the School. In return, we offer a bespoke programme for Scholars and a vast array of clubs and societies in which Scholars are expected to be involved. Our academic Scholars leave Rugby equipped with the skills and academic ambition to thrive in the most intellectually demanding universities of the world. Four members of teaching staff have specific responsibilities for Scholars. The programme is directed by the Keeper of the Scholars, who works with three assistants to provide a range of thought-provoking academic opportunities. Weekly meetings are held for each year group of Scholars, encouraging a sense of community. There are also many opportunities for Scholars from different year groups to share ideas through events such as Scholars Question Time, modelled on the BBC TV programme, in which panellists debate with one another and respond to questions on the issues of the day. For those who prefer a less confrontational but no less ambitious forum, there is the challenge of delivering a Scholars Seminar paper on a subject outside the syllabus. We want our Scholars to see themselves as part of an academic community that extends beyond Rugby, so we offer a series of guest lectures by distinguished visitors, frequent outings to places of cultural interest, and regular visits to the theatre. Academic Scholars are exposed to new ideas and experiences, encouraged to debate with the brightest minds, and to put themselves forward without arrogance as leaders in the intellectual life of the School. This process helps Scholars to be self-critical, to know their own minds and to emerge from Rugby as independent thinkers, wellinformed and capable of engaging fully with the challenges that lie ahead. 2 Academic

ART Art Scholars are at the heart of the cultural life of the School. Their creativity, imagination and proficiency influence and inspire the whole School community. Their regular displays of work in the Design Centre and Lewis Gallery attract interest, admiration, debate and discussion. We expect our Art Scholars to immerse themselves in their subject not just in lessons but through the wide range of activities we provide, and by spending much of their free time in the Design Centre. They have access to a diverse and exciting range of processes and media, from drawing, painting and printmaking, to sculpture, ceramics, digital media and textiles. Each of these areas is staffed by an experienced and talented group of teachers and technicians, many of whom are highly regarded artists. Our community of Art Scholars is based in the purpose-built Design Centre, where our light and airy studios provide an inspiring environment where talent is supported and developed. The success of the Art Scholars programme is reflected by the large number of pupils whose passion and enthusiasm are nurtured to such an extent that they pursue further study and careers in Art after they leave Rugby. Creative thinking, experimentation and independent learning are an integral part of this life-enhancing subject. Along with the study of art and culture, from antiquity to the modern day, pupils technique and skill base are encouraged by regular visits to museums and galleries across the UK, Europe and New York, and from attending talks by visiting artists across a range of media. Art 3

COMPUTING Rugby School was one of the first schools in the UK to offer both GCSE and A level computing and the importance with which we regard the subject is reflected in our introduction of computing scholarships in Computing Scholars can enjoy our recently refurbished digital learning environment. Work station management software allows pupils to express creative ideas and share best practice among themselves. Programmable technology is available to those keen to extend their learning within and beyond the teaching syllabus while extra-curricular trips aim to engage and inspire our Scholars throughout the year. Computing Scholars are supported by specialist teachers who teach a range of programming languages while using their contacts in the local business and industrial community, as well as universities, to the best advantage. The Computing Department s Scholars programme includes one-to-one tutorials, regular society meetings and a busy speakers programme to stimulate further discussion and to act as a source of inspiration for projects and ideas. Regular trips to exhibitions and businesses give pupils a first-hand picture of how computing within industry has progressed and encourages thought about where the future might lead. 4 Computing

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY Design and Technology Scholars have genuine passion for the creative process, spending as much time in the Design Centre as possible, both for their own interests and to encourage others. They have an interest in the design and development of products, use the most up-to-date technologies available but are also aware of traditional methodology. They are inquisitive, enjoy analysing situations and relish solving practical problems. They are risktakers, appreciating that often the best way of learning is by making mistakes. They are hungry to learn about new ideas and processes. Scholars are supported by a team of teachers and technicians whose wide experience spans engineering and product design, from jewellery to CAD. Our facilities include well-equipped workshops with a large range of manufacturing equipment from traditional hand tools to CAM facilities, including laser cutters, a CNC router and 3D printing machines. This range of processing ability allows pupils to create products from most materials and to develop a range of manufacturing skills. The classrooms are equipped for drawing, modelling and investigating, complemented by PCs linked to a range of CAD software and associated ICT peripherals. The weekly Design and Technology Scholars society, frequent museum and gallery trips, the biennial trip to New York and regular visits by guest speakers all act as excellent sources of inspiration. Regular design challenges and the annual speaking competition DEScriptor, when Scholars talk about an artefact or product, present meaningful opportunities to demonstrate their appetite for the subject. Design & Technology 5

DRAMA Drama Scholars at Rugby enrich everyone s School experience. Through their performances, design and technical work backstage, their talent makes a valuable contribution to the cultural life here while they benefit from outstanding academic education. Academically, Drama at Rugby is a popular choice at both GCSE and A level with pupils consistently achieving outstanding results with many awarded places at leading universities, including Manchester, Birmingham and Warwick, as well as world-leading drama schools such as RADA, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and LAMDA. Drama Scholars (Acting) involve themselves in all aspects of School drama from auditions to trips, workshops to clubs, in addition to studying Drama as an academic subject. LAMDA lessons are provided as part of the Scholarship programme and Scholars are entered for exams guided by our dedicated LAMDA tutor. Drama Scholars (Technical/Design) support the extra-curricular theatre programme and the academic practical exams working alongside our Theatre and Venue Manager and full-time Theatre Technician. Drama Scholars are supported by the Director of Drama, two further full-time teachers and our Theatre and Venue Manager. Their combined experience of working in leading theatre companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Opera House and the National Theatre Company, ensures an outstanding drama provision. Additionally, the School has links with many theatre companies which perform regularly to our drama pupils, often with accompanying workshops. This enables pupils to work alongside professional performers, deepening their knowledge of theatre forms and styles. An important part of the year involving both roles is the highly anticipated annual Drama Scholars production a chance for them to pursue and develop their own interest in theatre and performance. The Macready Theatre is our first-class, professionally equipped, 250-seat venue and in addition, the excellent acoustics in The Temple Speech Room make it perfect for large-scale musicals, while the purpose-built staging in our Sixth Form Centre hall offers yet another versatile space. Other smaller venues around the School enable us to run four or five productions simultaneously during events such as the Arts Festival. 6 Drama

MUSIC Music at Rugby is exceptional. This is in no small part due to the talent, commitment and discipline of our Music Scholars. Their concert performances showcase the very best of music at the School, while their rigorous approach to practice demonstrates the hard work and dedication that is required to become a leading musician. We expect our Music Scholars to make a meaningful contribution, supporting other members of the School in their own music making but also using their talents to contribute to the department s programme of performing to the local community. Using facilities unrivalled by any school of this type, Music Scholars are coached by a large team of inspirational specialists, many of whom enjoy an international reputation. Scholars have the opportunity to listen to, play alongside and take part in master classes with top professional musicians on a regular basis. They follow a personalised programme which includes mentoring by members of the Music Department, regular outings and talks, workshops in leadership skills through music and, importantly, free music lessons. Extended and refurbished in 2011, the Music Schools include more than 40 teaching/practice rooms, a large dedicated classroom, two technology classrooms, a recording studio, a seminar room and a small concert hall. We also have a beautiful Edwardian concert hall, seating 800, which has two high-quality grand pianos and an historical three-manual 19th century organ by Bryceson. Music Scholars enjoy the experience of performing to packed audiences in these wonderful venues, such as the annual Concerto concert, along with a professional orchestra. Our School Chapel, one of William Butterfield s masterpieces, which seats more than 1000, has an award-winning four-manual organ, while the Memorial Chapel, with its Harrison organ, provides an intimate space for chamber music and special liturgical events. Old Big School, an atmospheric classroom dating back to the 1800s, is a frequently used venue for chamber music and the lively Blue Note Society. Our musicians have access to four fine pipe organs, several grand pianos, including a Bosendorfer and three Steinways, as well as a full range of percussion instruments and a number of orchestral instruments. 10 SPORT Rugby School is synonymous with sporting excellence and Sports Scholars play an important part in ensuring our continued success. Our Scholars are talented and determined young men and women who relish the challenge of competing at the highest levels of school sport. We expect them to lead by example, both on and off the field, setting the standards in training and preparation and mentoring junior Scholars. A multi-million pound programme of investment has yielded facilities which are among the best in the country. The famous Close is revered by the many leading rugby players and teams from all over the world and our playing fields accommodate up to 13 further rugby pitches. The School has sand-based astro turf hockey pitches, artificial championship tennis courts and seven netball courts, all floodlit. Extensive cricket facilities feature five squares, eight artificial nets, 12 grass nets and six indoor nets spread between two halls. Athletes train on facilities which host national league matches, while the Sports Centre includes a fitness suite, 25m pool, fives courts and squash courts. Rugby School s record of sporting achievement is extensive, with teams and individuals regularly competing at county and national level. We have exceptional coaches, many of whom have played sport at the highest level. The School plays regularly at county and national level across a number of sports hockey, rugby football, soccer, tennis, athletics, polo, squash, cricket, badminton, fives, rackets, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, sailing, triathlon, netball and rounders. The programme for Sports Scholars is tailored to individual needs featuring specialised coaching and weekly one-toone sessions with the School s own strength and conditioning coach organised to fit around studies. In addition, there are regular tutorials with the Director of Games to set targets, assess current performance and help achieve a balance between School commitments and sport. 8 Sport
