2 Introduction Clifton College comprises three Schools and therefore offers the opportunity for continuity of education for girls and boys from ages 3 to 18: Butcombe Pre-Preparatory School Nursery to Year 3 The Preparatory School Year 4 to Year 8 The Upper School Year 9 to Year 13 Each year a number of awards are offered to girls and boys in order for them to be able to come to Clifton. These are, broadly, in two categories: Scholarships and Awards: these are merit-based awards and are competed for via examination, audition or other appropriate assessment. Candidates are placed in a rank order of merit based on their performance. The maximum award available by scholarship examination or assessment is 25% of the fees. The combined value of two or more Scholarships or Awards cannot exceed this amount. Bursaries: these are means-tested awards and are made at the School's discretion. They are given in addition to a Scholarship or Award. In accordance with the Charities Commission guidelines Bursaries are made following the completion of a Grant Application Form (GAF) which includes a Confidential Statement of Financial Circumstances. Bursaries may, in exceptional circumstances, be awarded up to 100% of the fees. Where appropriate, applications for Bursaries should be submitted with the Scholarship application form. 11+ Scholarships For entry to The Preparatory School 11+ Academic Scholarships The closing date for entries is 9th January The examinations will consist of papers in English, mathematics and verbal reasoning. They will be held at Clifton College Preparatory School on Friday 17th January Candidates must report to the School by 9.00am and will be free to leave by 2.30pm approximately. Candidates will normally be under the age of 12 and over 10½ on 1st September 2014 in other words, successful candidates will take up their places at the School in Year 7 in September Music Scholarships The closing date for entries is 9th January The John and Anne Guy Music Scholarship: Music Scholarships are examined by audition and interview. Candidates should offer two instruments with the principal one being of Grade 4 standard. They will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument and must be able to perform well on their second instrument and may offer singing as well. Importance is attached to sight reading. Continued tenure of a Music award is conditional upon the boy or girl playing a full role in the musical life of the Preparatory School. Winners of 11+ Academic and Music Scholarships will be expected to be candidates for the appropriate Scholarships to The Upper School at 13+. Those candidates who perform well in the written examinations will be called for interview on Wednesday 22nd January 2014 and the awards will be announced the following week.

4 Scholarships & Bursaries 13+ Music Scholarships The closing date for entries is 13th January The Joseph Cooper Scholarship will be awarded to the top Scholar in the case of his or her performance at audition being outstanding. 13+ Sport AWARDS The closing date for entries is 17th October Sport Awards are available for boys and girls for entry in September In making these awards we are ideally looking for candidates who excel in two or more team sports: rugby, hockey or soccer, and cricket for boys; hockey, netball and tennis for girls. The successful candidates will have Regional and/or International potential at senior school level. Candidates will be invited to Clifton College for two days of practical assessments and interviews on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th November Wherever possible members of the Clifton staff will also arrange to watch candidates perform for their school. Candidates should be over 12½ and under 14 on 1st September They will be called for a music audition at Clifton College on Tuesday 28th or Wednesday 29th January It is strongly recommended that prospective candidates should arrange a preliminary interview with the Director of Music, preferably in the autumn term of The examination is designed to assess promise as well as to test actual performance and considerable importance is attached to sight-reading, tests of musical interest and intelligence, and aural tests. Candidates will be asked to perform two contrasting pieces on their main instrument. They should be able to perform on a second instrument and may offer singing as well. There is no written examination. All Music awards include free tuition in two instruments (one of which may be singing). The age of candidates will be taken into consideration in making the awards. Scholars will be allowed to specialise in Music to such an extent as the Head Master and the Director of Music may think desirable. Continued tenure of a Music award is conditional upon the boy or girl playing a full role in the musical life of The Upper School. Polack Awards Jewish boys and girls are encouraged to apply for any of Clifton College s Academic, Music and Art Scholarships (at 11+, 13+ and 16+). The Trustees of the Polack s House Scholarships Fund are also able to award a number of means-tested Polack Bursaries for Jewish boys and girls who would not otherwise be able to come to the School. The Scholarships and Bursaries may be up to 100% of the fees in exceptional circumstances. Candidates must demonstrate an interest in Judaism and take part in Jewish activities in the School. The Old Cliftonian Society scholarships The Old Cliftonian Society funds a number of Scholarships to candidates who meet specific criteria and where there is financial need. In addition, bursaries may be available depending on the current commitments of the Society. There are currently 10 Scholarships and Awards funded by the Society every year in addition to a varying number of bursaries, all with a range of award values. Candidates should apply to the School in the normal way. It will be clear at this stage if a candidate meets the criteria of any particular award and the Society can then become involved. In all cases, the criterion of financial need will be assessed by completion of a Grant Application Form, as explained in the Introduction section of the leaflet. Boys and girls who attend Clifton College Preparatory School are also eligible for all 13+ Scholarships and Awards, and suitable candidates will be nominated by the Headmaster of The Preparatory School after consultation with parents.
5 16+ Scholarships For entry to the Sixth Form Academic Scholarships: open to candidates from other schools wishing to join Clifton in the Sixth Form. In 2014 up to ten Sixth Form academic awards are offered to boys or girls aged not more than 17 on 1st September 2014, on the basis of tests and interviews held in the week commencing 18th November 2013 or in the week commencing 24th February The top award in the field of science will be titled the Dr Ridgeway Scholarship. A further Sixth Form award is offered to sons or daughters of Old Cliftonians. These awards may be held for any approved combination of AS level subjects. Candidates for these awards are expected to be on course for at least 6 A* or A grade passes at GCSE. They will be assessed in their two most likely A level subjects. Sport Awards, Music, Art and Organ Scholarships: open to candidates from other schools wishing to join Clifton in the Sixth Form. A limited number of awards are available for girls and boys who offer exceptional talent in these areas. The Directors of Sport and Music are always happy to talk to prospective candidates. In Sport we are ideally looking for candidates who excel in two or more team sports, although excellence in individual sports may also be considered. Governors Scholarships: are available for any talented pupil living in the city of Bristol who wish to join the Sixth Form, but for whom the fees are entirely prohibitive. These awards may cover the full tuition costs for a day pupil and special consideration will be given to candidates who we believe will most benefit from, and contribute to, the rich and varied life of the College. Assessment will vary and will be appropriate to the range of talents offered by a candidate, but for all candidates it will include an interview with the Head Master.
