JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Lecturer in Dynamics: Energy and Propulsion Systems Job Grade: Research and Teaching Grade 6/7 Job purpose: To contribute to and enhance the research, teaching and enterprise activities of the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering in the area of Engineering Dynamics, particularly within the framework of energy and propulsion. The area of energy and propulsion systems constitutes an important thematic challenge for the Wolfson School and enjoys the support of the university. The successful candidate will contribute to the research of the Dynamics Research Group (DRG) which spans the areas of dynamics (multi-body and non-linear aspects) and tribology, and in many instances an integration of these disciplines. The main thrust of research is in the areas of energy efficiency (mitigating friction), and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) refinement with strong application to the vehicular propulsion systems. The successful candidate should strengthen the existing expertise in the DRG and further complement these. Duties and responsibilities: Research To pursue a personal research programme consistent with the research priorities (thematic challenges) of the School and the University, in this instance dynamic aspects of energy and propulsion systems.
2 To secure external research funding from national and international bodies and particularly in collaboration with industry. To supervise and manage research projects and research staff. To publish the outcomes of research in outlets of international standing, particularly high quality academic/scientific journals. To attend and contribute to major international and national conferences. To supervise postgraduate students at Masters and Doctoral levels. To collaborate in research initiatives with colleagues in the School and more widely across the University including with colleagues in Research Schools. To collaborate in research initiatives with other HEI s and other relevant bodies, particularly industry. To produce an annual personal research plan. To be involved with all the members of the Dynamics Research Group in the common area of activities in Dynamics and Tribology of Powertrain Systems. Teaching To teach and inspire undergraduate and postgraduate students and to conduct associated assessments. To provide academic and pastoral support to undergraduate and postgraduate students. To promote the use of a range of methods and techniques in teaching, learning and assessment. To engage in the evaluation and development of modules for which you have responsibility, in terms of content, delivery and assessment. To be responsible for the design and content of specific areas of teaching and learning within the School s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. To co-operate with colleagues in the continuous review and development of the School s taught programmes and the curriculum. Enterprise To engage with business, public and voluntary organisations through knowledge exchange activities such as student projects and placements, research collaboration, consultancy, knowledge transfer and specialist training. To create social, cultural and economic impacts from academic, especially research activity. To secure external funding in support of these activities. To seek opportunities for the commercialisation of research and the formation of social enterprises. Related Activities and Functions To work effectively with relevant administrative, technical and academic staff in the School and across the University. To carry out specific administrative roles and functions as may be reasonably required e.g. Responsible Examiner, Programme Co-ordinator, Personal Tutor, Admissions Tutor. To take part in and, on occasion, act as chair of one or more School committees. To engage in training programmes in the University (e.g. through Staff Development) which are consistent with your needs and aspirations and those of the School. (1) Background in Engineering or a Physical Science with specific and current expertise in the field of dynamics, with track record in aspects of energy and propulsion (including but not limited to Vehicular applications). (1,2) Experience of experimental research and or development and active in collaborative research with industry. (1,2,3) Experience of working in a high quality academic research or industrial environment, including experience at post-doctoral (or equivalent) level. (1) Evidence of publication of original work of high quality in refereed academic and highly acclaimed international symposia. (1) Desirable A PhD in the area of dynamics and/or tribology, particularly applied to the issues of energy and propulsion systems. (1) Achieved or progressing towards Chartered Engineer status. (1) Experience of working with industry, particularly in the area of dynamics with applications which complement the current activities of the DRG.
