Any curse taken fr credit must be pre-apprved by the high schl principal prir t enrllment. Curse Planning Prcess Please review the high schl graduatin requirements. Meeting these requirements is the respnsibility f the student and parent. The schl s staff can and will give advice abut the curses that are ffered, but ultimately success in high schl rests upn the shulders f each student. High schl cunselrs and teachers are yur greatest surce f infrmatin when making curse selectins fr the cming year. We recmmend that students and parents wrk with the faculty and staff t plan the curses t be taken fr the entire fur years f high schl, nt simply thse t be taken during the cming year. Things t cnsider when cmpleting a fur-year plan f study are high schl graduatin requirements, prir successes and failures, special interests and aptitudes, cllege entrance requirements, and ther career plans. Valedictrian Eligibility fr valedictrian requires cmpletin f the Cllege Prep curriculum requirements. Only students wh have made A s in all f their curse wrk and have 14 advanced placement r pre-ap classes will be cnsidered. In additin, valedictrian candidates must have cmpleted at least ne advanced placement curse in each f the fur cre curriculum areas f mathematics, science, English, and scial studies. Cumulative GPA frm 9th grade thrugh the 3rd quarter f a student s senir year determines valedictrian and hnr graduate status. Beginning with the Graduating Class f 2013, cumulative GPA frm 9th grade thrugh the 3rd quarter f a student s senir year will determine valedictrian and hnr graduates. The tp 1% f graduating senirs with the highest weighted GPA will earn valedictrian status. 1

2 Law Requires that Students Pass ACE Exams r an Alternative t Get Diplma In 2005, Oklahma legislatrs passed a new state law, Achieving Classrm Excellence (ACE), that launched many new prgrams and requirements aimed at strengthening Oklahma schls and insuring that high schl graduates master skills t succeed in cllege and the wrkplace. The law says that students planning t graduate in 2012 and thereafter must additinally take and pass fur end-f-instructin tests r perfrm at a specified level n any ne f a number f alternative tests as determined by the Oklahma State Department f Educatin. Tests Students Must Pass Beginning with students entering the ninth grade in the schl year, every student shall demnstrate mastery f the state academic cntent standards in the fllwing subject areas in rder t graduate frm a public high schl with a standard diplma: 1. Algebra I; 2. English II; and 3. Twf the fllwing five: a. Algebra II, b. Bilgy I, c. English III, d. Gemetry, and e. United States Histry. T demnstrate mastery, students must attain at least a prficient scre n the end-f-instructin criterin-referenced tests administered. All students must take the Endf-Instructin (EOI) exams fr any curse they cmplete and fr which an EOI exists. Each student wh cmpletes the instructin fr English II, English III, United States Histry, Bilgy I, Algebra I, Gemetry, and Algebra II at the secndary level shall cmplete an end-f-instructin test. Alternative tests may nt be given in lieu f Endf-Instructin (EOI) exams but may be used by students wh did nt scre at least at the prficient level n ne f the required EOI exams in rder t meet the ACE Testing Requirements fr graduatin. Oklahma Statutes prvide prcedures whereby alternate tests may be used by Oklahma students t meet the ACE graduatin testing requirements. Make sure yur child is in schl every day. Stress the imprtance f ding well in class. Talk t yur child each day abut his r her class wrk and hmewrk. Use , phne calls, cnferences and Putnam City s nline service, ParentPrtal, t keep up with yur child s perfrmance in schl and stay in tuch with his r her teachers. Emphasize that schl and graduating frm schl are the highest pririties. Reinfrce with yur child the imprtance f passing end-f-instructin exams. As the law requires and has always been the practice, end-f-instructin tests are administered at the end f each curse. Nw the law requires that students wh fail any end-f-instructin test have up t three chances t pass it in a calendar year. Students wh d nt attain at least a prficient scre n any end-f-instructin test shall be prvided the pprtunity fr remediatin and the pprtunity t retake the test until at least a prficient scre is attained n the tests f Algebra I, English II, and twf the tests required r an apprved alternative test. Remediatin may be prvided by extended time during the schl day, a summer academy, tutring, nline cursewrk, r ther supplementary services. Students wh received a failing grade in a curse fr which an EOI test is required, and wh then scre at least Prficient r Advanced n the related EOI r an assciated alternative test apprved by the State Bard f Educatin, will be given credit fr the class and have a grade f P (Pass) recrded n their transcript in additin t the grade f F. 2 Accmmdatin fr English Language Learners Based n the N Child Left Behind Act f 2001 and the State Department f Educatin requirements, English language learners are defined as students with an English prficiency level belw 4.8 n the WIDA Test. In an effrt t better supprt ur English language learners, the Putnam City schl district s teachers use secnd language acquisitin strategies in their classrm. Furthermre, they grade English language learners n cntent, nt n crrect grammar. Instead f using a pass/fail grading system, they use grading mdificatins cmmnly used with IEP students t determine a letter grade fr ELL students.

5 Cllege Prep Curriculum is Required by ACE The ACE law requires students entering the 9th grade in the schl year and thereafter t cmplete a cllege prepatry curriculum, unless the student s parent r legal guardian apprves the student t pt ut f the cllege prepatry curriculum. If the parent r legal guardian chses t exercise their ptin t nt enrll the student in the cllege preparatry curriculum, the parent must sign and return the prper frm, a sample f which is given belw. Chsing the curses a student takes in high schl is an imprtant decisin fr parents and their student. A cllege preparatry curriculum is challenging and may help determine a student s future success. Research indicates that students wh take a cllege preparatry curriculum and pursue educatin and training beynd high schl have mre career pprtunities, and have a higher incme and rate f emplyment. Parents r guardians are nt required t sign this frm as the student will autmatically be enrllled in the cllege preparatry curriculum. Hwever, if yu d nt want yur student enrlled in the cllege preparatry curriculum, yu must cmplete the infrmatin belw and return it t the schl prir t enrllment.
