2 A Message From Our Account Handling Consultant There is no doubt that this year the market has been steadier than it has in a long time, resulting in there being an influx in jobs available for Account Handling professionals. This has been great for candidates who have been given the confidence they need to start their job search. For the client, this has resulted in a candidate driven market. This means that there is strong competition to secure the best talent. In today s market, there is so much more influencing a candidate s decision to take a new role than simply joining an agency with a FTSE100 client list and a cabinet full of awards. Reputation is key the market is small and candidates talk, so giving off the right impression is vital. Everything from the interview process to what you can offer a prospective candidate is important. Salary and standard benefits are a no-brainer (pension, healthcare, holiday, and flexibility in working hours) but softer benefits are also becoming more prevalent. What do you offer your employees that no other agency does? There is still high demand for digital talent, for those with experience of SEO and PPC. Agencies are shouting out for Digital Account Managers that have strong knowledge across all digital platforms, with good back-end awareness to enable them to be able to brief developers, as well as the rest of the digital team. So basically, be able to work on all levels. Again, these candidates need to be sold the benefits of the, being in high demand means they will more than likely have a pick of a few. Ian Lenehan Managing Consultant Account Handling In 2014 we experienced another year where strong PR candidates have been highly sought after, with candidates being snapped up extremely quickly and at times receiving multiple job offers at the same time, it s definitely a competitive market for agencies to be recruiting in! This looks set to continue into 2015 so it s really important that recruitment and interview processes are well managed. Speed is definitely of the essence to make sure that you don t miss out on the perfect new addition to your team! Account Manager level still appears to be the most in demand and candidates at this level are often highly sought after, particularly with PR for the B2B sectors. However, good PR candidates at all levels from Account Executives to Senior Account Directors are hard to come by. Agencies need to stand out from their recruitment competitors wherever they can; soft benefits and salary are both important, as is culture. Flexibility within the role is also becoming increasingly important to candidates. 5 A Message From Our Creative Consultants Permanent In 2014 we saw a recovery of the Creative Industry, which resulted in confidence being reignited throughout the market. Not only did we see an increase of Creative job briefs but we also saw an influx in the talent that was actively looking. Towards the end of the year there was a marked shift in control, meaning that candidates who had once been desperate to attain just the one interview now had many choices and opportunities in organisations which in the previous few years had been reticent to recruit. This resulted in a shift in behaviour by both interviewers and candidates. With more choice for candidates, the interviewers had to work harder to sell themselves, their company and their job role. We saw more jobs being turned down at the final hurdle; clients had to work quicker and smarter in their interview process. The continual growth of Digital lead roles has been a challenging yet insightful process for both clients and creative candidates. Candidates have been required to step up their skill set to include aspects of Digital that they would otherwise not have, in order to keep up with the increasing demand for Digital work. Clients have needed to be patient and realistic when recruiting, lengthening time to recruit timelines, and starting them earlier than anticipated. Inevitably this growing Digital skill has demanded higher salaries and overall packages have needed to be as competitive as possible. The year ahead looks set to continue in the same fashion. With Online activity showing no signs of slowing down and with an increase in mobile, responsive, integrated work alongside traditional print output. Candidates are now almost certain to upskill and broaden their offering to meet the needs of a furiously demanding Industry, ever changing, evolving and adapting to consumer needs. Freelance The freelance Creative market has certainly been buoyant this year, although it has gone in sporadic bursts rather than showing any real consistency for a large part of the year. It has therefore been a busy year for us helping to supply marketing agencies with talented freelance creatives. In 2014 the main needs called upon still seem to be for Creative Artworkers and good all-round Designer/Artworkers who can integrate into a team instantly and seamlessly work with the studio to deliver print ready artwork. There has been a slight change in the attitude towards remote working too which has helped secure the right skill set reducing the issue of geographical constraints. There has also been an increased demand for Senior Creatives, Art Directors and Creative Teams. Many clients have seen the value of hiring some good senior conceptual talent, as it gives an edge to their current team and has helped win many a pitch for some of our clients. Digital / Web Designers and Developers are still very much in demand especially those with UI / UX / 3D and Mobile App development experience but as ever as these skills are harder to find their availability is limited due to the demand. The junior and mid-weight level is still also a buoyant market on the contract side, however as the permanent market grows steadily, there are less candidates looking for freelance as they have an increased opportunity to secure permanent work. We are confident that freelance creative will remain strong and steady in 2015 and we will work hand in hand with our permanent team to showcase our amazing and diverse freelance candidates to deliver the best possible talent to our clients.
