2 OUR STORY Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Suzy, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen is the boldest community fueling the best science and making the biggest impact in the fight against breast cancer. OUR AFFILIATE Seventy-five percent of the Affiliate s net income goes toward funding grants to local hospitals, clinics and community organizations that provide breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs for uninsured women in Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. The remaining net twenty-five percent supports the Susan G. Komen Research and Training Grants Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational/scientific programs. OUR PROMISE The Susan G. Komen promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality of care for all and energizing science to find the cures. OUR IMPACT Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Pink-o de Mayo and Run for the Pink, Susan G. Komen Miami/ Ft. Lauderdale has invested more than $9.3 million locally to fulfill our promise, working to end breast cancer in our local community. OUR PASSION Because 10 million women around the world could die from breast cancer in the next 25 years without the cures, Susan G. Komen is fighting every minute of every day to end breast cancer forever KOMEN MIAMI/FT. LAUDERDALE GRANTEES Baptist Health Breast Center Cancer Support Community Christine E. 3 Faces of a 2 Anniversary th To celebrate the 20 th Anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for the Cure, Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale will be launching the Faces of a Warrior campaign. In 1996, the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Race for the Cure started with a few hundred participants and a band of warriors determined to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer. The 20 th Anniversary campaign will showcase how far we have come over the last 20 years, as both an Affiliate and a community - from a Race with a few hundred people to a movement with more than 20,000 people annually. Since its inception, more than 120,000 people have participated in the 5K Walk/ Run, One Mile Fun Walk and Tot Run, while raising more than $14 million to fund the fight against breast cancer locally. The Race not only raises significant funds and awareness for the breast cancer movement, but equally important, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. With a focus on 20 years of service and survivorship, the Faces of a Warrior campaign will highlight a survivor for each year of survivorship by sharing their stories of strength and resilience, stories of not just surviving breast cancer, but thriving in spite of it. As a kick-off to the campaign, Komen will host its Inaugural Survivor Luncheon on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at 11:30 A.M. at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Race Day will serve as the culmination of the Faces of a Warrior campaign, where survivors and supporters alike will help Komen Miami/Ft. Lauderdale celebrate 20 years of truly saving lives. For more information on the Faces of a Warrior campaign or the Survivor Luncheon, please contact Megan Smith at or megan@komenmiaftl.org.
