Objectives The invitation to this photography competition is part of the REGIONAL CONFERENCE OF THE AMERICAS 2012, that will take place in Medellín, Colombia, in October under the agis of the Colombian Society of Landscape Architects ( with the international cooperation of the International Federation of Landscape Architects ( The purpose of the conference, besides giving new thrust to the profession and strengthening education and collaboration with other professions, is to subscribe and ratify a Regional Landscape Initiative. Lectures will be framed within the principles of the Latin-American Landscape Charter Initiative: _ The enjoyment of the landscape is a right of all human beings and therefore generates responsibilities. _ The landscape is a fact of general interest. _ The landscape is fundamental to the quality of life of society. _ The landscape participates in the general goal of sustainability. _ The landscape is closely linked to climate change mitigation. _ The landscape is a fundamental part of the natural and cultural heritage and therefore of the regional and national identities. _ The landscape is a resource favorable to economic activity that brings added value, increases production and contributes to job creation and new technologies. 1 Terms of Reference The organizing committee of the Conference, with the technical support of the Landscape and Territory Research Group of Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Manizales, summons participants to the Photography Competition on BORDERS: LANDSCAPES ON THE ALERT. The theme of the competition is that or borders seen as frontiers or areas of transition between the constructed and/or urbanized context and the natural and/or undeveloped context, as fundamental structures in the landscape. All photographs related to this context as a fundamental resource for, and access and enjoyment of, the landscape as a right for all people and as an indispensable element for society, will be accepted. 1.1 Objectives: - To foster and promote the importance of border landscape as a terrotory resource. - To foster and promote a culture of reflection regarding borders as landscape resources. 3 - To promote the development of photography as a form or artistic and social expression. - To promote the innovative and creative nature of the technique employed, as well as the creative and unique nature of photography as a means to convey a message. 1.2 Who can participate: Citizens over 18 and coming from any country will be able to participate. Participation in the competition is totally free of charge. Participation in the competition implies awareness and acceptance of these rules. Any unforeseen circumstances, not considered under the terms of reference for the competition, will be solved by the organization and/or the jury. The terms of reference are published in Inquiries may be addressed to the following address: concursos@iflasap2012.com. 1.3 Terms and rules The 2012 Regional Conference extends an invitation to participate in the Photography Competition BORDERS: LANDSCAPES ON THE ALERT. Awards will be given to the 3 best photographs previously registered in accordance with the formalities. There are two phases to the Competition. In the first phase, up to 20 photographs will be selected for participation in the second phase as finalists in the competition. The selection of the winners will take place in July Photographic work Each participant will be able to submit up to three photographs. A pre-requisite for participating in the competition is that intellectual property and public exhibition rights must belong to the participant submitting his/her work to the competition. Photographs may be submitted in the form of paper prints (15 x 20 cm minimum size, and 20 x 30 cm maximum size) or in digital form (CD with JPEG images in a resolution of 200 dpi and maximum 2 MB and 1500 x 1000 pixels in size). 4 Each photograph must bear a title written in the back, together with a pseudonym of the author. In a separate closed envelope indicating the pseudonym on the outside, the author will include his/her personal information. Authors who receive notice from the organizers indicating that their work has been preselected will be asked to provide prints 60 x 80 cm minimum size and 1.30 x 1.30 maximum size. The photographs must be protected and ready to hang in rigid frames. No soft supports will be accepted. Authors will not be able to submit winning photographs to other competitions, or publish them in any graphic medium, either in print or digital form. Photographs exhibiting captions or markings that could be interpreted as advertising in the opinion of the jury will not be accepted. The organizers are in no way liable for damages or losses of photographs submitted by the participants in the competition Reception of the work Work sent for participation in the first phase of the competition must be delivered by (if in digital form) or in person before May 30th 2012, between 8:00 and 18:00 hours at the headquarters of Universidad Nacional de Manizales, Colombia, South America. The 20 selected photographs that will participate in the second phase and that will be the finalists of the competition (whose results will be awarded in July 2012), must be sent by or delivered in person before JULY 30th 2012 between 8:00 and 18:00 hours at the addressed to be announced later in Colombia, South America. For photographs arriving by mail, the date on the postal stamp will be considered as the deadline date. The authors of pre-selected photographs will be notified by the Organizing Committee and will be asked to send their work ready for exhibition within the following ten (10) days after they are notified of the selection Return of the work Tel: BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA.

5 Photographs that are not selected may be retrieved at the same address where they were delivered, within thirty (30) days after the date of closing of the competition. After that time, the organizers shall not take responsibility for their preservation. Tel: BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA.

6 2 Rights over the photographs All contestants must the owners of the copyright to the photographs sent to the competition, and must ensure that there will be no third-party claims. Participation in this competition implies that the Colombian Society of Landscape Architects is given express authorization to reproduce, publish, exhibit and use the photographs as well as authors names for any other form of dissemination considered appropriate, as long as this use does not bring profit for the organizers. Except as provided above, the authors retain all the intellectual property rights over the photographs submitted to the competition. Once they are exhibited, the winning photographs will become part of the permanent property of the Colombian Society of Landscape Architects for exhibition during the cultural activities established by the parties, but mentioning in all cases the name of the author and the title of the work. Notwithstanding, the author will retain all Intellectual Property Rights in accordance with Colombian law and any international treaties to which Colombia is a party in this regard. 3 Identification of the work The closed envelope containing the photographs shall also contain a size A4 folder with the following information: - The participant s full name - Address - Contact telephone - address - Sworn statement regarding the intellectual property over the photograph (attached) - Prints or a CD with the photographs, clearly indicating the name of the author and the title of the work - Date and year of creation of the work 4 Pre-selection, Selection and Jury The jury consists of three (3) experts in the fields of Landscape, Art and Photography selected by the organizers, as follows: André Munhoz de Argollo Ferrão (Brazil) Civil Engineer from Universidad Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp), Architect and Urbanist from PUC- Minas Gerais, Master in Agricultural Engineering from Feagri-Unicamp (1992), Ph.D. in Architecture and Urbanism from FAU-USP (1998), Tenured Professor, FEC-Unicamp (2002). Professor of the School of Water Resources for Civil Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism of UNICAMP. 7 management in the following areas: rural architecture, landscape and cultural heritage, territorial planning and design, architectural design, construction techniques using material alternatives and appropriate technologies. Creator and Coordinator of the COMPADRE Network (International Committee for Rural Development and Heritage). Other activities include publications and research, graduate thesis mentoring and multiple teaching activities. José Luis Falconi (USA) Bachelor of Humanities from Pontificia Universidad Católica in Lima, Perú (1995), Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from William and Mary College in Williamsburg (1997), Master in Romance Languages, Spanish and Latin-American Literature (2004) from Harvard University in Cambridge, and Ph.D, in Literature and Romance Languages from Harvard University. He is currently the coordinator of the Latin Art Forum at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin-American Studies in Harvard University. He has worked as free-lance journalist, film editor and producer, and Aid Coordinator for the World Access Service Corporation in Richmond, Virginia. At present, he works as art curator. Santiago Escobar Jaramillo (Colombia) Architect, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, artist and photographer. In 1999, Santiago Escobar Jaramillo (32) was deployed as a Colombian soldier as part of the Multinational Force and Observer (MFO) in Sinai, Egypt, where he was assigned the job of photographer and translator for Press and Visitors. It was the first time, at 19, that he used a camera and took photographs. Back in Colombia he was admitted to the Architecture school at Universidad Nacional de Colombia in Manizales. As a student of architecture he continued with his work in photography, participating in relevant competitions and exhibitions for young artists: the four versions of the Fernando Botero Award, the Casa Cuadrada Art Hall , the Guerrero University Art Hall 2002 and 2003, among others. His graduation project in architecture, Citadels in Conflict was awarded First Prize in the Best Graduation Work Competition in the Art Creation and Expression category at Universidad Nacional de Colombia. In 2007, after receiving a scholarship grant from Colfuturo, he traveled to London to start a Masters Degree (merits) in Photography and Urban Culture at Goldsmiths College, London University, where his final project on displacement and photography received a Distinguished mention with a score of 78/70. For the course Through the Lens I and II he worked on the urban photography series entitled London, gap my mind that evolved into a volumetric setup for the 2011 Photography Biennale by Fotomuseo. Santiago Escobar Jaramillo has worked as a photographer and artist in several countries in Africa, South America, Europe and the United States. In 2006 and 2008, he traveled to East Africa with a commission from the ICIPE-African Insect Science for Food and Health entomology institute to redesign the institute s image and make a photographic documentary of its projects in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Sudan. His creative work consists of artistic, documentary and urban photography, with reflections on the individual, space and conflict, and memory through conceptual and geometric aesthetics. His work has been exhibited in more than 60 individual and collective exhibitions locally and internationally, and he has received several recognitions and awards. 8 of Artists Colombia; the International Image Festival, Manizales, as curator of the I, II and III Photography and Design Gatherings; the Meeting of Photography Critics and Researchers in Montevideo and the Photography Book Workshop in Oaxaca by Trasatlántica-PhotoEspaña; the BBVA Hall of New Names by Banco de la República; and in international Art Fairs with the Christopher Paschall SXXI Gallery, among others. Since 2010 he has been working as photographer with Villegas Editores, capturing with his camera the idiosyncracies, landscapes and urban life in Colombia. He has published the following books: Apartamentos Bogotá, Colombia Solidaria' and 'La Policía de los Colombianos' in Spanish and English. Since November he has been teaching workshops and courses in Zona Cinco photography and film School. The Jury will be in charge of the pre-selection of the work received, as well as of the final selection and prize awards. The decision of the Jury will not be subject to appeal, and will be announced on October 17, 2012, during the Regional Conference Exhibition of the work The organization will hold an exhibition with the 20 finalist photographs during the Regional Conference Exhibitions will be announced through this website. 6 Prizes Although prizes have not been determined yet, they will represent interesting options for the participants, including: Publication in national journals and websites. Scholarships granted by in areas of interest in an online format. The jury will also grant Honorable Mentions and may select other photographs to include in the exhibition. 7 Time schedule 7.1 FIRST PHASE Photographs will be received between April 1st and May 30th, Pre-selection: JUNE 1-15, Tel: BOGOTÁ, COLOMBIA.
