Created in 2007, in response to market demands, the California certification is the only certification representing California Human Resources. Holding a Professional in Human Resources (PHR ) or a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR ) credential demonstrates your knowledge and experience with U.S. federal laws and regulations. But California HR laws and regulations are unique to the state. Adding to the complexity for HR professionals in California is the constantly changing nature of HR-related laws and policies. By offering a state-specific certification for California, the HR Certification Institute acknowledges the differences between California HR laws and regulations and U.S. federal laws and regulations. Demonstrate to your employer and customers that you are an expert in California HR laws and regulations by earning the California certification. I realized that having my PHR credential was not enough to prove that I have the knowledge and experience to practice in California. I took the California certification exam, and it created opportunities for me. I was able to use my PHR-CA credential to prove that I am an expert and a successful California HR practitioner. 5 RECERTIFICATION Keeping your California-specific certification current is easier than you think. Like the PHR and SPHR certifications, California certification is valid for three years with recertification through demonstrated professional development (preferred method) or retaking the exam every three years. PHR-CA: If you are PHR-certified, 15 recertification credits out of the 60, are California-specific. SPHR-CA: If you are SPHR-certified, 15 recertification credits out of the 60 are in Business Management and Strategy 15 recertification credits out of the 60 are California-specific. Recertification credits can be earned from the following categories: Continuing Education Instruction On-the-Job Experience Research/Publishing Leadership Professional Membership As a working HR professional in California, you may find first-time work experiences (e.g. participation in labor relations, revising a policy, etc.) contribute greatly to your recertification process. California-specific recertification credits can be earned in the following categories: Continuing Education (All 60 hours of credit) Instruction (Only 20 hours of credit) Business Management and Strategy, California, General and International credits can be earned through continuing education. Please note only 20 hours can be earned through webinar, webcast, podcast or videoconference learning. Examples: Any programming (conference, chapter session, e-learning or webcast) that has a direct focus on California-specific HR law or policies. Specific titles could include Unemployment Insurance in California, Employing Temporary Employees in California, Changes/ Updates in California Employment Law, Pregnancy Leave in California, California Wage and Hour updates, Understanding FEHA, etc. Business Management and Strategy, California, General and International credits can be earned through instruction. Please note that you only earn credit the first time you teach a program, not for each time you teach it. Your time spent preparing is automatically added into your submission. Examples: Any program that has a direct focus on California-specific HR law or policies. If you taught within your workplace or spoke at an event on topics such as Employment Law in California, Pregnancy Leave in California, California Medical Leaves, etc. hrci.org HR Certification Institute 5

6 RECERTIFICATION On-the-Job Experience (Only 20 hours of credit) Research/Publishing (Only 20 hours of credit) Business Management and Strategy, California, General and International credits can be earned through onthe-job experience. Examples: A new (first-time) work experience that has a direct focus on your business and California law or policies. Examples could include writing a Californiaspecific employee handbook, updating your California employee handbook with the latest/updated laws and policies in California, establishing a new office in the state of California and ensuring the workplace is California compliant, etc. Business Management and Strategy, California, General and International credits can be earned through research and publishing. Examples: Only writing a textbook, HR Journal Article, HR Blog Post or creating a video that is specific to the state of California (law/policy) would be eligible for credit in this category. Anything published would have to be done in a national publication, not a newsletter. An example would be if a textbook was written on Medical Leave Laws in California. YOUR PATH* TO 60 AS a CALIFORNIA CERTIFIED HR PROFESSIONAL HRCI recommends establishing a recertification plan during your three-year certification cycle. As a PHR-CA holder, here is a sample recertification credit path you could take: You can break out the 15 California specific credit-hour requirements by completing five hours of activities per year in the Continuing Education, Instruction, On the Job or Research/ Publishing sections. By taking this approach you would have earned all your credit hours in your three years. In addition to the five hours of California credit per year, earning 15 hours of general credit per year would allow you to earn the 60-hour total requirement in the three-year certification cycle. As a SPHR-CA holder, here is a sample recertification credit path which you could take: You can break out both the 15 California specific credit-hour and 15 Business Management and Strategy specific credit-hour requirements by completing five hours of activities per year (per credit type) in the Continuing Education, Instruction, On the Job or Research/Publishing sections. By taking this approach you would have earned all your credit hours in your three years. In addition to the five hours of California and Business Management and Strategy credit per year, earning 10 hours of general credit per year would allow you to earn the 60-hour total requirement in the three-year certification cycle. * Note: These are sample recertification credit paths that are designed solely as examples. 8 CALIFORNIA HR CREDENTIAL OVERVIEW To be eligible for the California certification exam, you must hold a current PHR or SPHR certification. PHR-CA /SPHR-CA exam content Compensation/Wage and Hour (22%) Develop, implement and administer compensation programs for all employee groups in compliance with California legal requirements. Employment and Employee Relations (46%) Develop, facilitate and manage workplace relationships, throughout the employment life-cycle, in compliance with California legal requirements. Benefits and Leaves of Absence (20%) Develop and implement programs, policies and procedures related to benefits and leaves of absence in compliance with California legal requirements. Health, Safety and Workers Compensation (12%) Develop and implement programs, plans and policies that provide a healthy and safe working environment, and administer workers compensation, in compliance with California legal requirements. Exam Format and Length Availability and Exam Registration Exams are offered twice a year: May 1-31 or December 1-31 Applications are accepted twice a year: January April or July November Please visit hrci.org for exact dates. 9 How to apply Step 1» Go to hrci.org Log in with your username and password. Step 2» Complete application and payment Check the field within your online profile to indicate that you would like to apply for the California certification exam. Since you hold a current PHR or SPHR certification, you will not need to submit documents to prove your eligibility. Submit payment once you have completed application. Only paid and completed applications can be processed. Step 3» receive AUTHORIZATION TO TEST (ATT) LETTER The authorization to test (ATT) letter is the official notification from the Institute that you have met all eligibility requirements and can now take the exam. Please note due the review process that it may take up to four weeks to receive your ATT letter. Step 4» Schedule Your Exam Once you receive your ATT letter, you can schedule your exam through Prometric, the HR Certification Institute s exam partner. Prometric has a robust network of test centers in California and across the United States. To schedule your exam, please go to and click schedule an exam. We encourage you to schedule your exam early in the testing window, as demand increases near the end of the window. Step 5» Take Exam On exam day, bring an official government-issued identification (for example, a passport). Step 6» Receive Results Preliminary results will be given immediately after the exam. Official results will be sent within approximately eight weeks after the exam. Successful candidates will receive their credentials at this time.
