5 5 Introducing Wesey Study Centre, Durham Wesey Study Centre, Durham was born out of a vision dating back over a quarter of a century. A number of eading Methodists became convinced of the need for a new theoogica institution serving the North which coud draw upon the resources of Durham University and offer something to its ife. This was to be an institution which offered opportunity to study for a God s peope, incuding those training towards ordination. That eary group of visionaries incuded uminaries such as C K Barrett and J D G Dunn, each in turn Durham University Lightfoot Professor of Divinity. That the former was ordained and the atter a ayperson captured something of the breadth of intent in founding this institution. However, this was not a vision driven ony by university academics; it was aso a vision rooted in the ife of church and circuit. Hence the WSC Management Committee, chaired for it first 23 years by Professor Dunn, has aways incuded ministers from oca circuits in Durham and Newcaste, and ay peope from a range of circuits in the North of Engand. The Management Committee from its inception aso incuded representatives from other church traditions, and so the Centre has aways been enriched by ecumenica partnership. continues to shape our work. This is a pace for study and formation, for both ay and ordained ministry, enriched by creative ecumenica reationships. We are shaped by a desire to ove God with a the heart, sou and mind. 6 6 About Wesey Study Centre Wesey Study Centre (WSC) was estabished as a Methodist training centre in From the first sma gathering of students, it has grown into a vibrant and exciting community. The Study Centre is situated within St John s Coege, one of the 16 coeges comprising Durham University, and enjoys a unique partnership with Cranmer Ha, an Angican theoogica coege. This partnership creates an opportunity for Methodists, Angicans and other church traditions to study and earn aongside each other in creative ecumenica partnership. They aso study and earn aongside over 500 undergraduate and postgraduate students within St John s Coege taking the fu range of degrees offered by Durham University. Being a part of St John s Coege means that WSC students experience and enjoy the inteectua, socia and cutura ife of a word-cass university. and educationa backgrounds. They are a richy diverse, joyfu and ivey community, earning together as they respond to the ove of God, seeking to communicate the Gospe in fresh and practica ways in a contemporary society. 7 7 Learning in Durham Library and Resources Durham is a city with deep spiritua heritage, rooted in worship and rich with Christian schoarship and history. Wesey Study Centre stands on a Word Heritage Site in the shadow of Durham s ancient and beautifu Cathedra, where St Cuthbert and St Bede are aid to rest, and in the heart of a region which has payed a key roe in the formation and shaping of Methodism; the nearby city of Newcaste-upon-Tyne being one of the three points of the Wesey triange. Wesey Study Centre, set within the historic buidings of St John s Coege, is ocated on the peninsua of Durham city. Durham has a wide range of churches, and other socia contexts, which students can engage with and earn from as part of their studies and formationa deveopment. There are aso exceent schoos, shops, cafés and museums, as we as a theatre and Botanic Garden. In partnership with Cranmer Ha, Wesey Study Centre is we integrated with Durham University s Department of Theoogy and Reigion, which has fourished since its foundation in WSC students are entited to take some modues of their BA or MA course in the Department of Theoogy and Reigion. Suitaby quaified Methodist student ministers may undertake their academic coursework in the Department compemented by formationa coursework through WSC. Durham s Department of Theoogy and Reigion has estabished an internationa reputation as one of the UK s eading institutions for the study of theoogy and reigion. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department was the highest ranked Theoogy Department in the country. Studying here in Durham offers students a unique opportunity to earn from schoars at the cutting edge of education, research and pubication, and to engage with ecumenica partners in a wordcass institution, whist enjoying a friendy northern city in a spectacuar setting within easy reach of the coast, nationa parks and areas of outstanding beauty. Students at Wesey Study Centre have access to the ibrary within St John s Coege which has a good theoogica coection and a genera undergraduate section. They aso have access to the Durham University Library, onine resources, specia coections and free entry to the Durham University Museums.

8 8 Learning in Community Heen Bamber Student Deacon The community eement of the Wesey Study Centre has had a big impact on both me and my famiy as we uprooted to ive in the area for my study. This aspect of the coege has supported us through ups and downs, during the stress of essay writing and the joy of ceebrations. The cose reationship with the Angican community has aso been significant in our mutua understanding of each other s ministries and beiefs. Anne Coates Student Presbyter Being a student at WSC has given me the opportunity to experience and participate in a wide variety of worship, from café stye, to Taizé, traditiona Methodist, and more contemporary styes. Worship Wesey Study Centre forms part of a warm and vibrant worshipping community. A daiy pattern of pubic worship and prayer is an essentia part of ife at St John s Coege, providing an important foundation for students as they prepare for ministry, whether ay or ordained. This pattern incudes prayer, a-age worship and Hoy Communion in both Methodist and Angican traditions. St John s Coege has its own ancient chape where students can experience a rich mix of traditiona and contemporary worship in a variety of musica and iturgica styes. WSC aso meets for prayer together as a Methodist community every week. Discipeship Groups Discipeship groups, comprising about a dozen students drawn from both WSC and Cranmer Ha, meet weeky offering a pace where reationships can grow, care can be shown, gifts and ministries can be discovered and exercised, and God s ove can be expressed in some form of mission and practica service beyond the coege. Meas Sharing meas together aso pays a key part in the ife of the coege, providing opportunities for discussion and a pace for friendships to deveop. Spouses and famiies are wecome at meas. Accommodation St John s has a number of singe study bedrooms avaiabe in coege and on the Baiey, some shared houses within waking distance of the coege, and tweve houses suitabe for married coupes and famiies. The coege aso keeps a ist of privatey-owned houses which are avaiabe to rent. Famiies and Chidren Famiy members of students are wecomed as part of the community. ACCESS, our support network for student spouses, organises socia events and meets weeky for prayer, encouragement and Bibe study. We are aso organicay inked to Districts and Circuits in Yorkshire and the North East of Engand and are partners with the Lindisfarne Regiona Training Partnership. These reationships shape both our identity and our work. The Regiona Training Partnership brings to the theoogica scene in the North East a remit for quaity adut Christian earning that is designed to fit around the ives of peope in their work and wider responsibiities. WSC and Lindisfarne have worked cosey together to deveop Loca Preacher training which is robust and embedded in Durham University s Theoogy and Ministry programme.

11 11 Internationa Reationships Professor Afred Stephen Director of Mission and Ministry, Taminadu Theoogica Seminary In addition to these regiona partnerships we are aso engaged in a number of internationa reationships. WSC is proud of its exchange programme through which a student is seected annuay for a year-ong exchange with Duke Divinity Schoo s MDiv programme in Durham, North Caroina and vice versa. Duke is the argest United Methodist Seminary and one of the argest Divinity Schoos in the United States, known for its wordcass facuty and research. In both universities there are great ecturers who inspire and chaenge us; who sensitivey move us towards a wider understanding of the diversity and historica contexts of the Christian faith, who try to prepare us for both the predictabe and the unknowabe chaenges of ministry. Pete Brazier Student Presbyter on a year s exchange with Duke University Divinity Schoo in Durham, North Caroina. We are aso deighted, in coaboration with the Queen s Foundation in Birmingham, to have a summer pacement programme with Taminadu Theoogica Seminary (TTS) in Madurai, South India. TTS is a seminary of the Church of Southern India which is committed to heping communities in the region to deveop their capacity to educate, serve and empower the poorest citizens. We were deighted recenty to have a visiting feow from TTS, Professor Afred Stephen, in residence in St John s Coege for a term. This network of reationships both at home and abroad is of critica importance for shaping our work and enriching student experience. Exchange programmes are meant not just to enabe the exchange of ideas and concepts, but they carry with them deeper intentions, wider scope and stronger aims which need to be actuaised and experienced. Exchange programmes aim to provide space for internaizing the way the partners on the other end do theoogy, conceptuaize the bibica message in the ight of their iving context, engage in theoogica discourse and envision the ministry of God in the word. They aim to widen the theoogica and ministeria perceptions. They envision a sense of goba soidarity and partnership in the ministry of God.

12 12 For A God s Peope From its beginning Wesey Study Centre has been a centre both for students training for ordained ministry and for those seeking to resource their own earning and practice of ay ministry, whether youth and chidren s work, preaching or mission. Current students are drawn from a range of Christian traditions. Many are experienced ministers seeking to refect on their practice of ministry Tim Cooke WSC Student Being a 49 year od with no prior academic experience, I was very daunted by the prospect of studying with WSC. However, I have found the whoe experience an incrediby positive one. The teaching is chaenging but forming and everyone students and ecturers are a very supportive. Best of a, everything at WSC is surrounded with prayer and worship fantastic! with theoogica rigour; others are ay peope who have enroed on our courses as a means of exporing their faith more deepy or in response to a sense of ca simpy to study. We wecome appicants from any church tradition who wish to undertake a course of study in theoogy and ministry. The ecumenica nature of a community in partnership provides a richy diverse and supportive earning environment for students wanting to engage with the study of theoogy at any eve. Students can take an undergraduate course which eads to a Certificate, Dipoma or BA in Theoogy and Ministry. Students with undergraduate quaifications in Theoogy might consider our MA in Theoogy and Ministry which offers a wonderfu opportunity to interact with ministry practitioners from a wide range of church traditions and ministry contexts. Experienced practitioners wishing to engage in high eve research and refection on ministry might consider exporing Doctora programmes avaiabe through our partnership with the Department of Theoogy and Reigion, taking advantage of the rich resources for research on offer here in Durham. The Doctor of Theoogy and Ministry (DThM) programme offers opportunities for experienced ministry practitioners to engage in research at the highest eve, which is directy reevant to their ife and work. There is aso opportunity to undertake PhD research within the Department of Theoogy and Reigion. A of these courses can be taken part-time for those aready in parttime/fu-time work or ministry. 13 13 Is God Caing You to Ordained Methodist Ministry? Loca Preacher Training One of our core purposes here at WSC is training Methodist students for ordained ministry. It may be that you are considering offering for ordained ministry in the Methodist Church. The Methodist Church recognises two orders of ordained ministry Presbyters and Deacons. Candidating If having engaged in a process of discernment you have a cear sense of ca to exercise ordained ministry within the Methodist Church, you may fee that you are ready to candidate. Candidating is the shorthand term for offering for ordained ministry within the Methodist Church. It is the process by which you and the Church test your sense of ca. This wi be tested by your Circuit Meeting, and again by a District Candidates Committee then finay by the Connexiona Seection Committee. The process of candidating formay commences in September and concudes in Apri. Wesey Study Centre has been deveoping new opportunities for the training and ongoing deveopment of Loca Preachers within the Methodist Church. This has incuded working with the Newcaste and Darington Districts of the Methodist Church and Lindisfarne Regiona Training Partnership to deveop different oca options for those wishing to train to become new Loca Preachers. 14 14 Undergraduate Courses in Theoogy and Ministry (Certificate, Dipoma and BA) The Undergraduate Certificate, Undergraduate Dipoma and BA in Theoogy and Ministry are Durham University programmes jointy deivered by Wesey Study Centre and Cranmer Ha. They are designed to meet the needs of: Methodist student ministers and Angican ordinands Youth Workers, Pastora Workers and others who wish to further deveop their training in Christian ministry Anyone who wishes to gain a recognised quaification for work in Christian ministry Structure of the Programmes The programmes can be studied part-time or fu-time. Each fu-time equivaent year invoves taking 120 credits. These credits can be taken over one year, over two years (60 credits a year) or over three years (40 credits a year). Certificate in Theoogy and Ministry One year fu-time equivaent at Leve 1. Possibe modues incude: Introduction to Od and New Testaments Interpretation of Bibica Texts Mission Practica and Pastora Theoogy Christian Spirituaity Dipoma in Theoogy and Ministry Two years fu-time equivaent at Leves 1 and 2; the first year is the same as the certificate course. Possibe second year modues incude: Od Testament and/or New Testament Texts Systematic Theoogy Pioneer Ministry Methodism Preaching in the Contemporary Word BA in Theoogy and Ministry (BATM) Three years fu-time equivaent at Leves 1, 2 and 3; the first two years are the same as the dipoma course. Possibe third year modues incude: The Bibe in Christian Ministry Issues in Pastora Ministry Contemporary Issues in Methodist Eccesioogy and Practice Dissertation Admissions Quaifications and Progression Entry to the certificate course is open to anyone who can provide evidence that they have pursued a systematic course of study or have equivaent professiona training or experience. Students can start by registering for the certificate, and on successfu competion proceed onto the dipoma; and ikewise onto the degree after competing the

Appicants with a certificate in Theoogy from another institution, or who have a 2:1 degree in another subject aong with some sustained theoogica study (such as Loca Preacher training) may directy enter the second year of the degree, competing the BA in two years. Student ministers with these quaifications can aso be considered for taking the BA in Theoogy offered by Durham University s Department of Theoogy and Reigion. Professor John Drane This is one of the most sophisticated professiona degree schemes I have come across anywhere in the word. There can be no doubt that this programme is at the cutting-edge of its subject. The staff invoved in teaching this programme are a doing a very good job, and show much evidence of creative teaching as we as competent understanding of their various discipinary speciaities. Methodist student ministers normay study for two years, taking either the dipoma, or the BATM starting at Leve 2. There is aso a postgraduate option for those who aready have a degree in Theoogy or who have done other substantia study of Theoogy in higher education, such as a joint honours programme in Theoogy and another subject, or a degree in Reigious Studies (see detais about the MATM in this prospectus). Pacements The earning outcomes of the programme are based on the cose reationship between Theoogy and Ministry, between academic earning and the practice of ministry. A number of modues are specificay inked to pacement work, which forms a standard part of the course for a students. Methodist student ministers, who normay train at Wesey Study Centre for two years, wi do the equivaent of thirteen weeks of pacement aongside their academic work. This incudes opportunities for pacements aongside circuit ministers (deacons and presbyters), in chapaincy teams, in Fresh Expressions, in community work, and overseas. It is designed to meet the needs of: Ministers/Cergy, Readers, Loca Preachers and other authorised ay ministers from any Christian Church Angican and Roman Cathoic ordinands and Methodist student ministers Teachers, Youth Workers, Pastora Workers and others invoved in Christian ministry Structure of the Programme The MA can be taken in one year fu-time or part-time over two or three years. Students on the MA in Theoogy and Ministry have the option of taking either one modue from the MA in Theoogy and Reigion offered in the Department of Theoogy and Reigion or a MA modue from any other reated MA offered in the university. Modues Sampe modues incude: Theoogica and Practica Refection on Mission and Ministry (core modue) Preaching from the Od Testament Mission and Ministry in the Acts of the Apostes Chapaincy Preaching from the Synoptic Gospes Theoogy in the City Training for Methodist Ministry Student ministers with a degree in Theoogy can take the MA part-time over two years as part of their training programme. Aongside this they woud aso take a number of modues from the undergraduate courses, and extensive pacement work. Postgraduate Certificate in Theoogy and Ministry The certificate consists of any two taught modues of the MA and can be studied for one or two years parttime. Postgraduate Dipoma in Theoogy and Ministry The dipoma consists of the core modue pus any three taught modues of the MA and can be studied for one year fu-time or two years part-time. MA in Theoogy and Ministry The MA consists of the core modue pus any three taught modues of the MA and a dissertation of 15,000 words and can be studied for one year futime or up to three years part-time. Doctor of Theoogy and Ministry (DThM) The Professiona Doctorate in Theoogy and Ministry is for experienced ministry practitioners,

17 17 Dr Peter Ward both ay and ordained, and wi provide: an opportunity to undertake research in the UK s eading theoogica research department a path to exceence in ministry through practica theoogica study Structure of the Programme The degree is normay taken as a six year part-time programme so that it works aongside the practice of ministry, though it is possibe to foow the programme as a fu-time student over three years. Summer Schoo A key component in the programme is the annua Summer Schoo. Students attend this every year throughout their studies. It provides some of the essentia teaching and research methods training in the eary stages, as we as a reguar point of contact with others pursuing practica theoogy research, with opportunities to test out ideas and findings in the research phase. Doctor of Phiosophy (PhD) A PhD or other research degree at Durham is about research. Students are expected to undertake independent, supervised work towards their thesis from the very beginning of their studies, supported and guided by an expert supervisory team throughout. Progress wi be assessed by a series of forma reviews during your studies. The soe requirement to compete the degree is to submit a thesis and pass a viva voce examination. There is no requirement for PhD students to undertake any taught courses, professiona experience or other training, but there are pentifu opportunities for them to do so and most students take up some of these whie they are in Durham. Appicants are advised to have informa contact with staff before submitting a forma appication, so as to expore their research interest and to answer detaied questions about the programme. Appications must be submitted directy to Durham University. Faced with the compexities of ministry in a fast changing context the Church needs to invest in cergy and ay peope who can refect theoogicay. The DThM is a strategic resource for the Church; it trains practitioners to think deepy and criticay about their practice. The Revd Eden Fetcher Superintendent of Newcaste Centre and East Circuit I have been deighted to be invoved with the Wesey Study Centre for the past four years as a member of the Management Committee. The Centre is a pace where ives are shaped both through the very high quaity of education and the deep and sincere pastora care offered by a staff. The ecumenica nature of the centre brings together different traditions which enrich the community of ay students and contributes significanty to the shaping of the ives of those who are preparing for ordination. I have been so impressed with the Centre and its invovement in the Department of Theoogy at the University of Durham that I have mysef signed up as a student on the DThM course.

Whist its foundations are Methodist, this is an institution which understands its capacity and caing to be a resource for the whoe of the Church of Christ. 19 19 Research Activity Wesey Study Centre Staff are activey engaged in research which informs teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate eves. Within the wider context of St John s Coege and Durham University, research ed teaching is embedded in our practice. Significant research initiatives incude the foowing: Diacona Research In response to an increasing interest in diacona ministry across many church denominations, Wesey Study Centre and the Methodist Diacona Order set up a two-year research project, funded by the Methodist Church and ed by Dr Andrew Orton entited Good Practice in Diacona Ministry. The research expored the opportunities and chaenges faced by deacons in the Methodist Church in Britain by supporting practica theoogica refection on their ministry. Emerging findings from the research were presented at an internationa ecumenica conference, hed at St John s Coege in September 2011, which expored different perspectives on this ministry and their impications for the Church and its reationship with wider society. By organising research ike this Wesey Study Centre contributes to ongoing deveopment in the Church, informing teaching with the atest research, and engaging Methodist schoarship in conversation with wider academic discipines in ways that inform, shape and resource ministry. CODEC CODEC is a research initiative based at St John s Coege, Durham, exporing Christian communication in a digita age. It seeks to ensure Christianity is reevant within the word of new media. CODEC has a number of different areas of work or key projects incuding: Preaching exporing the pace of preaching in the twenty firstcentury. From its position aongside Cranmer Ha within St John s Coege, we have had the priviege of studying aongside our Angican coeagues, undergraduates as we as independent students. The teaching modues have been varied and aowed students to engage with more speciaist forms of ministry incuding Pioneer eadership as we as exceent bibica and formationa earning. The Wesey Study Centre has enabed me to prepare for eadership in a church facing many chaenges and exciting opportunities.
