2 POSTGRADUATE THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION QUEEN S UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF THEOLOGY As an affiliate College of the Institute at Queen s University Belfast, Edgehill offers supervision for prospective Queen s postgraduate students applying for Masters or Doctorate pathways of study in Theology. MTh This is a full-time or part-time course of study for those who already have a good degree in theology. Students work with a supervisor in their chosen area of study. The course of study consists of a training module (Concepts, Issues and Methods in Theology Research), four taught modules, and a 20,000 word dissertation. The programme of study must be agreed in consultation with an approved dissertation supervisor and will be subject to formal endorsement by the Theology Postgraduate Research Committee. MPhil and PhD These research degrees are available to suitably qualified applicants. 3 UNDERGRADUATE THEOLGOICAL EDUCATION Foundation Degree in Theology for Ministry and BA in Theology for Ministry Edgehill sponsors candidates to study on the Diploma in Theology for Ministry and BA in Theology for Ministry through St. John s College, Nottingham. Degrees are conferred by the University of Durham. The distance learning Diploma/BA in Theology for Ministry is a flexible but robust course of Christian training. It combines an introduction to Biblical and theological studies with an exploration of Christian vocation. It is aimed at those who want to develop a better understanding of the Christian faith and to understand more about ministry, both within the church context and in the everyday world. Edgehill staff support the distance learning programme through weekly tutorial sessions, and telephone support. CERTIFICATE IN CHRISTIAN STUDIES The Certificate in Christian Studies (CCS) is a practical course in applied theology, designed to equip Christians of all denominations for ministry and mission, offered through the Distance Learning Programme of St John s College, Nottingham. You can register for a single module or multiple modules if you prefer. There is no time limit or deadlines, enabling you to study at your own pace. Modules supported by Edgehill in 2015/16 are Old Testament and Christian Worship. 4 PART TIME COLLEGE COURSES FAITH & WORSHIP Course Tutor: Miss Heather Boland The majority of those who are called to preach as a local preacher within the Methodist Church in Ireland will undertake the Faith & Worship training course. The course explores the Old and New Testaments, theology and church history all in the context of leading people in worship. It is intended to help local preachers develop their faith and knowledge, as well as their skills in leading worship and preaching. Faith & Worship is delivered in four sections: Section A Section B Section C Section D The teaching of Jesus; Exploring the Bible; Picturing God. Origins of Christian worship; Praising God; Picturing Jesus; The Holy Spirit. Being human; The work of Christ; Alive in Christ. The prophets; The kingdom of God and the Church; The bright succession; Enduring convictions. Sections C and D will be covered in the academic year 2015/16. Local preachers in training should note that Faith & Worship is only one of the requirements for accreditation as a local preacher. Those seeking accreditation also Thursday: 7 pm 9 pm Semester 1: 24 September - 3 December 2015 Semester 2: 7 January - 10 March 2016 Course Fee: need to work on building a Worship Portfolio and complete Biblical Exegesis under the guidance of a local tutor. AN INTRODUCTION TO HOSPITAL VISITATION Course Tutor: Revd Derek Johnston A 10-week training course offered in conjunction with the NI Healthcare Chaplains Association, this is a course for those already involved in hospital visiting either as part of a church pastoral care team or within a chaplaincy context. Places are limited on this course. Participants are asked to complete an application form and provide a letter of reference from their minister/ pastor/priest. 5 WALK IN THE WORD: The New Testament Story Course Tutor: Mrs Hazel Loney The time frame in the New Testament is so much shorter than the great rolling centuries of the Old Testament, but what a story! This course looks at the overall narrative of the New Testament, meeting many interesting characters along the way from Bethlehem to Patmos: un-named people like the woman at the well and big names like Peter, John, Mark, Paul, Cornelius, Lydia, James and many others. The central figure is of course Jesus, the carpenter from Nazareth who claimed to be God in flesh! According to Bishop Tom Wright, Jesus himself remains one of the most compelling figures in all human history. No matter what your worldview, your beliefs, or your culture, you will find Jesus haunting, disturbing, and attractive. Wednesday: am pm Semester 1: 23 September - 2 December 2015 Semester 2: 6 January - 16 March 2016 Course Fee: 150 INTRODUCTION TO PASTORAL VISITING Course Tutor: Mrs Louise Wilson A 5 week course for anyone involved in visiting within their local congregations exploring: The role of the Pastoral Visitor in the life of the local church; Communication Skills; Good practice guidelines and self-care; The place of prayer in visiting; Thursday: 7 pm 9 pm 7 April - 5 May 2016 Course Fee: 40 Appropriate responses and resources for pastoral concerns. PASTORAL SUPERVISION Course Tutor: Revd Diane Clutterbuck This is a 14-month course for ministers, chaplains, and pastoral counsellors, lay and ordained who supervise the ministries of others. It provides an approach to supervision which is contextually based, theologically and spiritually rich and psychologically informed. The course fulfils the training requirement for accreditation with the Association of Pastoral Supervisors and Educators.

6 CONTINUING MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT As a church we are committed to encouraging all people to grow in their discipleship and further develop their ministry skills. The CMD programme, a collaboration between Edgehill and IMYC, is open to ordained ministers, probationers, and to lay workers employed in any capacity in the life of the Church. SEMINARS AND TRAINING WORKSHOPS Edgehill staff are willing to work in collaboration with local congregations, Circuits or Districts to deliver training. For example, it may be possible to take CMD events out to Districts by request or to facilitate training on prayer ministry, pastoral supervision etc. Training workshops are offered throughout the year and details are circulated through ministers and local secretaries as appropriate. 7 ORDAINED MINISTRY Every Christian is called to exercise a ministry of one sort or another, as they use the gifts and talents with which God has entrusted them and respond to God s call to discipleship. Within that understanding of the ministry of the whole people of God ordained ministry is but one form of service. Ordained ministry is God s initiative. Since the beginning of the Church, Christians have set apart those whom God has called to a ministry of word, sacrament and pastoral oversight. Ordained ministry is therefore a vocation. It is an obedient response to the will and call of God and not primarily the outcome of one s own desires. That is why, if you believe that God is calling you to ordained ministry and leadership, the Church will rightly test that sense of call with you. Forms of ordained ministry God calls in different ways and at different times in life. The Methodist Church in Ireland recognises different ways in which ordained ministry can be exercised. Itinerant ministers can serve anywhere in Ireland and receive a stipend. Local ministers exercise ordained ministry alongside their other work and in a voluntary capacity. The stationing of local ministers is limited to circuits which are accessible from the minister s own home. The ordained ministry is open on equal terms to men and women. Training Initial training normally takes 5 years; 3 years in College and 2 as a probationer on circuit before being ordained. The best training pathway for each individual candidate is developed with the staff at Edgehill. There are three strands to initial training for all students: theological understanding, the skills necessary for ordained ministry and relationship with God. What next? If you think that God may be calling you into ordained ministry don t leave it there. Continue to pray, and talk about it with others you trust, and who will speak with you honestly. Speak with your own minister, who will want to think through your call with you, and who will be able to advise you on qualifications and the processes for candidating and training. You should also talk with the Superintendent minister on your circuit. You may also wish to speak to others in the Methodist Church who can guide you, and the Revd John Alderdice, Director of Ministry, will be happy to help you begin the process of considering whether the time is right to offer as a candidate for ordained ministry in MCI. 8 CONTACT US LIBRARY COLLEGE Edgehill Theological College is a ministry of the Methodist Church in Ireland which seeks to serve God by preparing men and women for ministry in God s Church. Alongside a full programme of training and development for ordained ministry, the College runs a range of courses which offer learning and training opportunities for all who want to study theology and develop skills for ministry. It is sometimes possible for staff to take speaking engagements or lead workshops in Circuits. The teaching staff at Edgehill are available to discuss training requirements with individuals, groups and local churches. The College library is a valuable resource for anyone engaged with theological study for academic courses, Christian ministry or for personal interest. The library also benefits from a close working relationship with the Methodist Historical Society in Ireland (located immediately beside the library) which holds a wealth of historical records and artefacts relating to Irish Methodism. Readership of the library is free to all Methodist ministers and Edgehill students. The fee for all others is 20 per annum.
