16 How to find an adequate SPM? System Reliability 40 Power Cycling Capability What is Power Cycling? A well known method to estimate the lifetime of an electronic device. The measurement and calculation of Power Cycling curves is very complex. Failure criteria is a electrical value (e.g. V ce sat) which can increase due to internal mechanical changes based on different thermal expansion coefficients
17 Power Cycling Capability Typical Power-Cycling Curve A ΔT j lower than 30 C is negligible. for AC-Drives with a fixed output frequency the numbers of switch on and switch off cycles are important. Example: T c =75 C T j full load = 150 C Δ T j for an on/off cycle is 75 C. For Δ T j =75 C it s possible to drive 10 5 cycles. Assumed this Drive will be switched on and off 5 times a day the lifetime can be calculated as follows: 5 10 Lifetime[ years ] years Power Cycling Curves SPM-Modules Confidential Initial T j is 25 C.
