Forecasting, planning and monitoring of traffic in Verona by integration of CUBE (simulation model) and MISTIC (integrated traffic supervisor) Arch. Bruno Pezzuto Traffic Control Center
City of Verona inhabitants (2012, 24 th sept)
Mobility in Verona (2010) vehicles 1,25 average vehicles/head 1,2 average of displacements per day per person displacements/day 20 average time for any displacement
ITS for Verona The city of Verona uses for many years the CUBE software for planning and study of urban traffic. In 2007 was realized the integrated system for mobility management whose strength is represented by the urban traffic control which has obtained sensitive improvements in urban roads.
ITS - Integrated system
UTC Urban Control System AVC Automatic Vehicle Classification VMS Variable Message System AVI Automatic Vehicle Identification Sensors CcTV Closed circuit TeleVision Cameras 31 SOS Emergency Assistence System 13
Reduction of travel time with UTC -21,6% Improvement can be achieved with Urban Traffic Control activated -35,7%
Output data and information

Transport modelling
Supervisor Modelling
Integration of supervisor with modelling Traffic monitoring Flow estimation also without direct measures Congestion observation and prevision Roads service levels Traffic prediction Every 15 Estimation of accidents and other events to traffic Trend of congestion Flow and other data for any urban road
Integration process
Generation of matrices O/D Analysing of storic trend: 240 sections for traffic measure 1,7 millions of hours for observation 1 year: period of observation 4 periods per year 3 periods per week (MON-FRI, SAT, SUN) 5 daily periods 60 matrices O/D
Flow chart of integration process
Network status sections of traffic measure zones 3. > links 4. > nodes
Forecast for programmated events 2. Just in time for not programmated events 3. Level of congestion
Result of integration Average reduction gasoline consumption: 1. Gasoline vehicles: 17% 2. Diesel vehicles: 14% Reduction of travel time: 28,9% Reduction of pollution: 14,45%. 8,8 km
