UK Marco Polo II GULFSTREAM.MOS Presentation : Francois POTIER - Brittany Ferries R&D Manager Marco Polo European Info Day - Brussel, April 10, 2013
Brittany Ferries Facts and Figures The French Company operates Ropax ferries in the western Channel and in the Atlantic Arch. Brittany Ferries owns 9 RoPax ferries, operating from 11 European ports located in France, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Spain Turnover 2012 : Staff: Overall traffic (2012): UK-Spain traffic (2012): 366 Mio employees 2,4 million passengers tourist vehicles freight vehicles passengers tourist vehicles freight vehicles Market shares: British Channel: Pax : 8%, Freight : 4% UK-Spain: The majority of the Pax and lorry RoRo traffics.
GulfStream: a strategic short sea devellopment Since 2004, Brittany Ferries has actively developed its short Sea Shipping network between the south of England and the north of Spain. This development has been successfully supported by the European Marco Polo program: In 2007 for the Modal Shift action: GULFSTREAM In 2010 for the Motorways Of the Sea action GULFSTREAM.MOS which is an upgrade of the previous project. In the early 2000s, Brittany Ferries ordered two new-build RoPax vessels delivered respectively in 2004 and 2007, it purchased a third Ropax vessel in The Company objective is to capture a significant share of the lorry traffic transiting via France between the UK or Ireland and Spain, Portugal or Morocco. The means employed to achieve this goal are: - The increase of the UK - Spain global freight capacities - The extra capacity provided for the hauliers over the weekend as they wish to avoid the Saturday and Sunday traffic bans on the French road network. - The increased frequency of departures to build a real alternative to the road solution for logisticians and road hauliers. The ambition of the two actions is to meet the EU targets to reduce road congestion and the external cost of transport.
GulfStream.MOS : Description of the project The new Motorways Of the Sea service was launched in April 2011 between Spain and the UK : Brittany Purchased the former Superfast V Ropax now operating 3 extra round trips per week - The action is a Motorways Of the Sea action - It will last 48 month (From April 2011 to March 2015) - The total budget of the action is 212 Mio Including the maximum EC/Marco Polo subvention : 5.57 Mio and 7.94 Mio contribution from the beneficiary UK Marco Polo II GULFSTREAM.MOS - The expected environmental & social benefits will amount to 58.5 Mio - The nr.of tkm to be transferred from road to sea will be 2.1 bio tkm - The nr. Of freight vehicles diverted will be freight vehicles

GulfStream.MOS: State of realisation At the end of the second year of action, 90% of the initial traffic forecast for this period and 80% of the modal shift have been achieved: These figures reflect the lower activity observed on the other UK Spain routes. The GulfStream.MOS project is an upgrade of the previous modal shift project, subsidies are therefore only granted for the additional share of traffic generated by the action. The actual traffic data have therefore been reduced by 8% for this purpose. The tkm figures have also been reduced as the systems for registering the weight of the vehicles before embarking was not in place in every ports at the beginning of the action. Only the tare of the vehicles has been considered for this share of the activity. Year (1+2) of action Adjusted Weight (Tons ) Adjusted Veh. 8 GulfStream MOS: Problems encountered & solutions The organizational problems encountered since the start of this action have been resolved in consultation with the Executive Agency. On a technical level, to perform three round trips per week, the vessel often needs to sail at more than 23 knots. The technical maintenance and refit budgets are higher than in the initial previsions because the ship that was chartered by Brittany Ferries is a used ones. Despite its commercial success, the project is not yet profitable, for technical and economic reasons mentioned previously. Marco Polo has a key role in this project as the European funding will limit the losses accumulated during the first four years of the action. Since the beginning of the action, Brittany Ferries has taken steps to reduce the fuel consumption of the ship, very good results were obtained using silicone hull paints. The company also obtained the authorizations to use the channels to the west of Britain to reduce the sailing distances between the UK and Spain.
GulfStream MOS: Viability of the project From 2005 to 2012: The steps: Nr of departures Linear capacity 2004: 2 return crossings per week ml 2007: 3 return crossings per week ml 2010: 5 return crossings per week ml 2013: 7 return crossings per week ml The linear capacities have been multiplied by 4 The nr of lorries per departure and the traffic have been multiplied by 6 M/V COTENTIN M/V CAP FINISTERE The market share of the RoRo short sea shipping services between the UK and Spain increased from less than 2% in early 2000s to 14% in 2012
GulfStream MOS: Viability of the project (2) The Motorways of the Sea is reliable and safe : Less than 2% crossings cancelled for weather conditions. The information is given to the users with the maximum notice to ease the search for alternative solutions. No risk of theft or damage to the vehicles A vehicle tracking system on the Internet A web reservations system is under development for the freight activities. UK This service is fully adapted to the development of the unaccompanied trailers: The quality of service, the time and the frequency of departure, and the capacity development implemented by Brittany Ferries since 2004 have encouraged several European logistic groups to invest in trailer fleets dedicated to the UK Spain RoRo services.
Main characteristics of the UK-Spain freight traffic Freight traffics are only slightly unbalanced: north-bound traffics represent 55% of the total activity and south-bound traffics 45%. Unaccompanied trailers represent 30% of the freight vehicles Refrigerated trailers represent 25% of the freight vehicles There are 10% empty vehicles Main products: (source enquête flux 2010)
