John was a worthy journalist, well respected and beloved by all in the shipping world. John is survived by his wife, Lisa Frey, and two sons, Conor and Aidan. The news of John s death has been communicated only on January the 2 nd, as specifically requested by the family. Costantino Baldissara, Paul Kyprianou and Luciano Bosso, respectively Commercial, Logistics & Operations Director of the Grimaldi Group, Research and External Relations Manager of the Grimaldi Group and Editor in Chief of the Grimaldi Magazines, who had the honour to work with him, will remember John for his unprecedented shipping knowledge, his passion and professionalism. The Grimaldi family and in particular Gianluca and Emanuele, who knew him for more than fifteen years, were shocked at the sad news and would like to send to John s family sincere condolences and heartfelt participation in their mourning. We will all feel the pain of John s passing and all of us who knew him well, as a friend, and as a respected, professional and honest journalist will miss him greatly. We met John several years ago when he was appointed as the Italian correspondent for the prestigious newspaper Lloyd s List where he was previously New York correspondent. We followed him in his well respected Italian career both with Lloyd s and more recently as a correspondent for the newspaper group Seatrade (Cruise Review, Magazine, Insider). Among other activities he was appointed as Press Consultant for the ECG Association. He lived in Nice (South of France), before relocating to Bath in the UK in In Italy he was at home. He spent a lot of time in Genoa, Rome, Naples and Trieste, conducting interviews with shipowners, brokers, lawyers and port operators. His reporting was accurate, well appreciated and at the same time dry and precise, in a perfect Anglo-Saxon journalistic style. In an affectionate comment, one of his Italian friends stated: We have lost a seasoned professional and a friend. John embodied all the positive characters of his Irish origins: loyalty, trustworthiness and love for the family. John was a true professional and all of us at Grimaldi are saddened by this great loss. His reporting and writing was distinguished and insightful, and he had cultivated a vast range of international contacts at the highest levels. The last time we met John was last October in Palermo, at the XVI Grimaldi Euro-Med Convention. He was with Lisa, his wife. Those days were beautiful in Palermo and we would like to remember him as he was during that time, always smiling in a sunny Sicily. 3 Fleet Development Naming ceremony of Finntide Last October the two ro/ro sister vessels Finntide and Finnwave were delivered by the Jinling shipyard of China to Finnlines. These new units are the last in a series of six ro-ro sister vessels ordered by the Group from the Chinese shipyards over the last two years. The christening ceremony of the m/vessel Finntide was held on the 30 th of October at the Jinling shipyard: godmother of the vessel was Mrs Leena Sarvikas, wife of Jussi Sarvikas director of UPM-Kymmene Ltd, while attending the event were Mr. Emanuele Grimaldi, Chairman of Finnlines, Mr Lars Backstrom, ambassador of Finland in Beijing, and many other guests. With a gross weight of 28,000 tonnes and a length of 188 metres, this vessel class has a cargo capacity of 3,326 line metres, providing space for more than 200 trailers. With their four decks, two of which hoistable, they can carry about 600 cars and have three internal ramps in order to speed up the loading operations. The lo-lo capacity for containers is about 400 TEU, making these vessels capable to ship a large variety of containers, rolling and breakbulk cargoes. Since Finnlines programme is focused on reducing environmental impacts for the benefit of future generations, this class of vessels is designed to achieve significant fuel efficiency and operational flexibility. The m/vessels Finntide and Finnwave are now bound to Europe. The latter will be christened at the beginning of 2013 in Wallhamn. They will be deployed in the Baltic and in the North Sea services including Spain and Russia. GNE WS 3

4 New services The Group strengthens its presence in the Adriatic Sea Two maritime services launched at the end of 2012: the Ravenna-Brindisi- Catania ro/ro service and the extension to Trieste of Minoan Lines Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Patras ro/pax service The Grimaldi Group marked the end of 2012 by announcing the launch of two innovative maritime connections in the Adriatic Sea to both Southern Italy and Greece. At the beginning of November, the Ravenna-Brindisi-Catania ro/ro service operated by Grimaldi Lines was launched. With a three-times-aweek frequency, this MoS is dedicated to the transport of any type of rolling units (cars, vans, trucks, semi-trailers, etc.). Serving this innovative route are the two ro/ro vessels Eurocargo Catania and Eurocargo Brindisi, which recently joined the Grimaldi fleet. Built at the Odense Steel Shipyard (Denmark) in 2011 and These vessels are among the most highly performing ro/ro vessels used in the Mediterranean, combining low fuel consumption with a high loading capacity reaching about 240 semitrailers each. This motorway of the sea represents the first direct link between Sicily and Apulia, as well as between the Upper and the Southern Adriatic coast of Italy says Emanuele Grimaldi, Managing Director of the Group. The quality and frequency of service as well as the tonnage offered are the key elements for the success of this maritime link which will offer additional opportunities of trade within Italy while also helping to reduce traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, concludes Emanuele Grimaldi. Departures from Ravenna are on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 6.00 p.m., with arrival in Brindisi on Wednesday at 3.00 p.m., Friday at a.m. and Sunday at 3.00 p.m.. The two vessels depart from Brindisi bound to Catania every Wednesday at 5.00 p.m., Friday at 1.00 p.m. and Sunday at 5.00 p.m. with arrival in Catania on Thursday, Saturday and Monday at a.m. Through Brindisi and Catania, freight transporters will be able to use, through transhipment, other regular services of the Grimaldi Group to Greece, the Balkans, Malta and Libya. Last December, Minoan Lines, a Grimaldi Group company, inaugurated the extension of its Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Patras ro/pax service to Trieste. With a frequency of three times a week, the service deploys three vessels, including two of biggest and most comfortable cruise ferries in the Mediterranean namely the Cruise Olympia and the Cruise Europa, each able to accommodate up to 3,000 passengers and carry 3,000 linear metres of rolling freight. Attractive and fast, these ferries boast cruise ship standard amenities, thus providing sheer relaxation on the voyage from Northern Italy to the Greek peninsula. The third vessel is the m/vessel Europalink, able to transport 500 passengers and about 4,200 linear metres of rolling cargo. In the occasion of the launch of the Tri- 4 GNE WS

The ceremony was attended by Roberto Cosolini, Mayor of Trieste, Franco Napp, Managing Director of Trieste Passenger Terminal, Guido Grimaldi, son of Emanuele Grimaldi and Corporate Truck and Trailer Commercial Director, Antonis Maniadakis, Managing Director of Minoan Lines, representatives of regional and local institutions, shippers and travel agencies. In his speech, Guido Grimaldi underlined how the link from Trieste serves not only the entire German, Austrian and Swiss markets, but also part of the Balkans, putting these areas in direct communication with the Greek market. This new line undoubtedly represents significant opportunities in the logistics of trade flows moving between Central and Northern Europe to the whole Balkan area, including Greece, and we do hope that our service will encourage business and economical relationships among all the countries of this area he affirmed. With the launch of the new Adriatic route, the Group sends a strong sign of confidence in the Greek market: since April Grimaldi Lines has been operating a service between Southern Italy (Brindisi), Igoumenitsa and Patras with daily departures in both directions, provided by two modern ferries, the Florencia and the Sorrento, strengthening the Adriatic sea links connecting Northern Italy, Sicily and Greece as well as Malta and Libya. 6 XVI Euro-Med Convention From Land to Sea The XVI edition of the Euro-Med Convention From Land to Sea, the annual conference organised by the Grimaldi Group for the promotion of short sea shipping, took place from on 4-7 October at the Grand Hotel Villa Igiea in Palermo (Sicily). The event was attended by more than 400 delegates, among which representatives of EU and Italian institutions, port authorities, logistics and transport operators, shipping industry professionals, representatives of the Italian and International mass media as well as the whole network of representative offices and agencies of the Group in the Mediterranean and North Europe. Leoluca Orlando, Mayor of the city of Palermo, opened the Convention, making reference to the historic links between the city and Grimaldi and to the support given by the Group by building a series of vessels in the city s shipyards during a period of crisis. Speakers at the conference were Antonio Bevilacqua, President of the Palermo Port Authority, Tommaso Affinita, Managing Director RAM-Rete Autostrade Mediterranee, Pasqualino Monti, President of the Ports of Rome and Latium, Luis Valente de Oliveira, European Coordinator for the Motorways of the Sea, Cristoforo Canavese, President of the Savona Port Authority, Emanuele Grimaldi, Managing Director of the Grimaldi Group. When the first i-phones came into the market, in a few months previous laptops became obsolete: the nine vessels we just bought are the i-phones of the ro-ro market, our G4, capable of carrying twice the cargo per tonne of fuel than the previous generation of vessels, our i-pad. With this comparison Emanuele Grimaldi started his speech and sent a clear message: by investing in modern tonnage. We are continuing to build up our fleet and have just ordered five new ships for ACL. The vessels purchased at what he called historically low prices are being built in accordance with the latest technological advances and will also be most cost-effective and efficient, thanks to higher loading capacities (3,800 TEU instead of the previous 1,850 TEU). With these newbuildings for ACL and other new units for Grimaldi (three con-ro vessels and six new units for the Mediterranean trade), Emanuele Grimaldi affirmed that his ro-ro and ro/pax fleet will be the youngest, most efficient and most environmentally friendly in the world. 7 tion. This is not only an ecological but also an economic imperative he believes. At constant consumption, costs would go up by EUR 150 million for fuel alone. Wherever possible we have therefore reduced fuel consumption in all our activities. In the first semester of 2012, the Grimaldi subsidiary Minoan Lines alone saved 26,000 tonnes of fuel, or 26% of the previous year s consumption. Finnlines also saved about 12,000 tonnes and there is still room for greater improvement, Emanuele Grimaldi said. Our path is the right one. Only by reducing fuel consumption will we be able to meet the green challenge and bring down costs, Grimaldi believes. During the convention, participants agreed on the importance of well-functioning ports for the motorways of the sea, while the most important issues were the green challenge and the escalating cost of fuel. In particular, Antonio Bevilacqua, President of the Palermo Port Autority, underlined how ports are not a terminal call but an intermodal hub of a complex chain. The problem is that on one hand we have the efforts of the shipowners but on the other hand also an investment in non-targeted areas behind the port, the so-called last mile, he stated. Pasqualino Monti, President of the Ports of Rome and Latium, presented the construction in Civitavecchia of a dedicated ro-ro terminal with berthing facilities for 10 vessels with a cost of 140 million euros, while Luis Valente de Oliveiraspoke about the 90 new projects just approved and about the confidence of EU regarding the motorways of the sea and in improving the efficiency of land/ sea connections with respect for the environment. In his presentation of the Port of Savona Mr Canavese outlined the aim of a growth of the commercial role by developing new dedicated access to the hinterland, efficient connections to the transport network and space for logistics activities behind the port. Tommaso Affinita in his speech outlined how the Ecobonus scheme is considered by the EU a valid instrument for saving energy, particularly in these times of crisis. The speakers big common problems are developing the infrastructure to connect ports to their hinterlands, as well as the modernisation and expansion of the hubs. The convention ended with a debate moderated by Alfons Guinier, Secretary General of ECSA (European Community Shipowners Associations) with the participation of Mike Sturgeon, Executive Director of ECG, Rafael Aznar, President of the Valencia Port Authority, Ugo Salerno, President and Managing Director of RINA, Ferdinando Lolli, Special Commissioner of the Brindisi Port Authority, Andrea Annunziata, President of the Salerno Port Authority together with Luis Valente de Oliveira, Tommaso Affinita and Emanuele Grimaldi. Ghianda best agent of the year 2012 During the XVI Euro-Med Convention L.V. Ghianda was awarded as the best ship agent of the Euromed Network for The evaluation elements selected to vote the agent of the year were business increase, dedication, pro-activeness and quality service. Based in Livorno, Ghianda has been recognised as the most efficient and customer oriented agency: between 2010 and 2011 it has registered a 92% increase of cargo handled in the port of Livorno and of 29% in 2012 compared to In particular, this award is dedicated to Carlo Terzi, honorary President and Managing Director of the Company: he started serving the Group in 1968 and for over 40 years he has devoted his life at the service of vessels with the same dedication and care. 8 Atlantic Trades Inauguration of the new carpark of the port of Douala On the 28th of November, the Grimaldi Group company Socomar (Société Camerounaise d Opérations Maritimes) inaugurated the renovation of its new carpark in Douala, Cameroon s main port. Many guests attended the ceremony, including the Governor of the Littoral Region, Mr Beti Assomo, who cut the ribbon. The renovation and modernisation works which costed about Euro 2.4 million allow the modern facilities of the port of Douala to be provided with a 24-hour vehicle storage facility according to international standards. With a total area of 55,000 m 2, the carpark is able to receive about 2,800 cars, offering customers an economically convenient, secure, centralised, efficient and fast centre for customs clearance. The new carpark guarantees an efficient and high quality service affirmed Nicola de Leva, General Director of Socomar, acting as the Group s agency and stevedoring company in Douala and employing about 220 persons. The security of the structure also plays a very important role, while the primary purpose for Socomar is to always guarantee the safety of vehicles discharged at the Port of Douala and the speed in making available the cargo to their owner he concluded. According to the Governor Beti Assomo, the project presents a modern structure in conformity with the requirements of the ISPS Code, at the forefront of technology. With respect to security and enhanced operations at the carpark, Mr. Ivan Tessitore, Operations Director of Socomar, noted that the company has implemented a remote monitoring system in order to internally control all access points. This allows close control of the operations of inputs and outputs. A fire protection system has been installed throughout the car park, to intervene rapidly in case of fire. The new structure has a software platform to share data on the exact location of the vehicle in order to allow customers to access them faster, and is also fitted with an optical fiber connection. The improved handling of vehicles is made possible by the forklift trucks with a horizontal extension, in order to handle vehicles without touching the chassis structure. Furthermore, the new vehicle storage offers other important facilities: fire fighting system, closed circuit video surveillance and modern offices which work 24 hours in case there is a need by anyone in the chain of customs clearance of vehicles. The port of Douala is one of the ports called by the Grimaldi regular services linking West Africa directly to North Europe and Portugal and via transhipment to North America. 8 GNE WS

9 Service Developments AET introduces the Cargo Measuring System On the 1st of October 2012 the Cargo Measuring System (CMS) went in production at Antwerp Euroterminal (AET), Grimaldi s hub in Northern Europe. The new system has the abilty to scan a single self-driven vehicle, and is also capable of measuring one or more vehicles transported on low loaders. The software editing functionalities provide the possibility to assign and select the objects or vehicles and calculate their individual measurements. In 2005 AET started the project in cooperation with a UK-based software development company. The main principle of the system is based on eye-safe lowpower laser scanning technology: utilizing four scanning devices each rotating over 90 and providing a 3D object from which the dimensions are derived from. Initially, standard available laser products were utilised with unsatisfactory results. Therefore, a highly specialised engineering company was contracted to build a more sophisticated type of laser. These took 14 months of research, development and testing. The first indoor tests were carried out in July 2011 with satisfactory results. After enhancing the intensity of the lasers, mounting them inside enclosures so it could operate outdoors under conditions, in September 2012 the system was installed at the AET terminal. The system is located at the main entrance and surrounds the weighbridge, which has been integrated into the system to display the vehicle weight as well as its dimensions. The enclosures are made of aluminum and have a shutter type opening for the laser beams which are completely sealed when the system is in pause mode to prevent infiltration of dust and rain. An external rain sensor is continuously measuring the activity i.e. density of rain and activates automatically a blower fan inside the enclosure that keeps the rain away from the scanner. The dimensions of the scan bay area is customizable, but at AET the dimensions are up to 20 metres in length, 3.5 metres in width and 5.8 metres in height. The total scan time is 90 seconds and produces over 1 million points for a large vehicle, thus giving a very clear and detailed scan image of the vehicle on the system. 10 Achievements The Group awarded as Logistico dell anno 2012 The Grimaldi Group was recently awarded by Assologistica and Euromerci the Logistico dell anno 2012 (Logistics operator of the year 2012) Award for the development and promotion of sustainable mobility. Guido Grimaldi, son of Gianluca Grimaldi and Commercial Manager Deep Sea Lines of the Group, received the award on behalf of the Group during a ceremony held on the 30 th of November at the Auditorium of Assolombarda (Association of Entrepreneurs of the Lombardy region) in Milan. The Group was awarded for having been a pioneer in the development of the Motorways of the Sea, having its flagships Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona certified Green Star by the Italian Naval Register. These ships were designed and built to have no impact on the environment, without any release of residual liquid or solid in marine waters. Assologistica is the Italian association of logistics entreprises, general stores and refrigerators, port terminal and airport operators while Euromerci is one of the main Italian publications specialised in logistics. Best Line Portugal-Africa to Grimaldi Portugal For the fourth consecutive year Grimaldi Portugal was awarded as Best line Portugal-Africa for 2012 by the local magazine Transportes&Negocios. This recognition is highly valuable, considering the extremely fierce competition existing in Portugal, where some of the world largest container carriers have dedicated services to Africa. This award acknowledges one of the oldest traditions in trading with Africa, holding a significant share of the commercial exchanges between Europe and the Black Continent. In order to continuously improve its liner services, Grimaldi Lines deploys state-of-the-art vessels from Leixões and Lisbon, covering the market demands for containerised, rolling cargoes or project cargoes of oversized weights and dimensions, to West Africa, South America and the Mediterranean. 10 GNE WS

11 Achievements ACL receives Becton Dickinson Award Last October ACL has been awarded Becton Dickinson s Supply Chain Carrier of the Year. Becton Dickinson (BD), the leading global medical technology company that develops, manufactures and sells medical devices, instrument systems and reagents, has awarded ACL their logistics supply Chain Carrier of the Year Award. This is a global award which recognizes top performing suppliers who stimulate continuous improvement and influence growth and innovation across BD s supply base. ACL is honored to have been recognized by such a prestigious and highly regarded company as Becton Dickinson. We will continue to do all we can to earn their trust and confidence in transporting BD s time Ford Q1 certification of excellence to Grimaldi and temperature sensitive transatlantic shipments. It is very gratifying to see the results of the team effort of so many in the ACL family who work together to make such an achievement possible said William F. Kearns, ACL s Executive Vice-President. The BD Supplier award which was presented at this year s Procurement Recognition Dinner was established to recognize BD s suppliers for their contributions to advancing and supporting key initiatives, products, and processes with the continued goal of increasing customer satisfaction. For the 12th year in a row Ford Motor Company granted the status of Q awarded to the Grimaldi Group, the highest award granted by the automotive firm to its suppliers. The first time the Group received this recognition was back in 1999, the first ever to be granted to at European company. This year s award status was given for all the services provided in the course of 2011 and recognises the Group s logistics expertise, low damage and innovative use of modern technologically advanced ships. Ford Motor Company requires many high quality standards from its suppliers, one of which is determined by the QOS (Quality Operating System), including many parametres and systems involving the entire team. Then, on an annual basis, Ford audits its suppliers to verify if their set working procedures are in accordance with the levels of its demand: the four models of reference are quality, delivery, engineering and commercial. 12 Our human resources Master Aloisio turns 40 years of career in Grimaldi The passion and dedication that Salvatore Aloisio transmits while talking about his career is deeply impressive. The 9 th of October 2012 marked a significant anniversary for this experienced Master: he celebrated 40 years of work at the Grimaldi Group. "For a big company it takes a great family" said Master Aloisio showing with emotion a photograph of the founder of the Group Guido Grimaldi. Humility, passion and human values mark this family, and this is why I am so in love with Grimaldi" he affirmed. Born in the Sicilian city of Trapani, Salvatore Aloisio joined the Group on the 9 th of October 1972 embarking on the "Giovanni Grimaldi, a cargo vessel which transported grain and coal. He since then started a brilliant career: he embarked on board the OBO vessels "Oslo", "Sun shine", "Time Bridge", then on the Frecce and the Grande-class vessels deployed between Italy, North and South America, Africa and Northern Europe. He became Master in 1993 on board the "Repubblica-class" vessels, the conro ships designed for the carriage of containers and rolling cargo, operating between West Africa, Brazil, Italy and Northern Europe. In 1975, while on holiday leave, he met Francesca Paola whom he married. They have two daughters Mariarita and Valeria, respectively, 29 and 26 years old. "And thinking that after only six months of employment I wanted to give up!" said laughing, Master Aloisio. "My wife has always encouraged me, even in hard times" he said. "It is difficult to live away from your family, missing the most important moments such as birthdays, the growth of your children, or just everyday life. I devoted myself to this job and this is why Grimaldi is a second family for me". In 2003, Master Aloisio embarked on the ro/pax vessel Eurostar Valencia deployed on the short sea route between Salerno and Valencia. Until now he has been at the helm of the ro/pax vessel Catania, deployed on the Group s short sea service linking Salerno to Palermo and Tunis. There are many anecdotes that Master Aloisio likes to narrate, such as changes in his work through vessel technological advances, the difficult decisions he often had to take, and the new Grimaldi generation that he saw growing on board - "I remember that Guido Grimaldi Jr (son of Emanuele Grimaldi) was little more than a kid when he worked on board the m/v Eurostar Roma" he said. "I thank the Grimaldi family for the human values that during all these years they have always transmitted, and whose continuity I wish also to the future generations" Master Aloisio concludes. 12 GNE WS

13 Old locomotive on board m/v Grande Scandinavia On the 20 th of December 2012 the locomotive Stanier 8f TCDD Churchills was loaded from Southampton, UK, on the m/vessel Grande Scandinavia, deployed on the Euro-Med service, bound tol Ashdod, Israel. The TCDD Churchills is a old engine, among the few left world- wide, built by North British Locomotive and shipped to Turkey in Once in Israel, the engine will be restored and exhibited in a new museum in the Ottoman train station of Beersheba. NEWS 13 mobile cranes from Hamburg to Vitoria Last August a special piece of freight was loaded on board the m/vessel Grande Francia : 13 mobile cranes and a crawler crane of Liebherr were rolled onboard the vessel and shipped from Hamburg with destination Vitoria, Brazil, in the service linking North Europe to South America. Specifically these were 13 self-propelled units on own axles, the attachments line e.g. counter weights and lattice jibs as well as one crawler crane LR 1400/2 distributed onto a total of 42 trucks. Cruise ship passenger bridge on board Atlantic Concert ACL moved IMAX screen for James Bond movie premier An IMAX theatre screen recently sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia onboard the m/vessel Atlantic Concert destined to St. Petersburg, Russia. The IMAX screen was shipped for the last James Bond movie premier Skyfall. The screen was metres long, and was lashed onto a 40ft roll trailer and driven directly into the Atlantic Concert via her 420 metric ton capacity stern ramp, parked and lashed for a safe and secure transatlantic voyage. This project is part of IMAX Corp s expansion of 14 IMAX theater systems network throughout Russia beyond the areas of greater Moscow and St. Petersburg. This marks the single largest European theatre deal in its 45-year history, bringing the total number of IMAX theatres in Russia and the Community of Independent States to 27, making that region the third largest market behind the U.S. and China. A CL helped to build the largest cruise terminal in the world by transporting passenger boarding bridges along with their component parts. The gangway unit was metres long, 3.10 metres wide and 3.80 metres high and weighed 31 tonnes. It was lashed to a 48ft extendable flatbed trailer. Another passenger bridge was lashed and secured onto a 60ft roll trailers, component parts were loaded onto a 40ft roll trailer. They were driven directly onto one of Atlantic Concert s three main ro/ro decks for its transatlantic voyage from Goteborg, Sweden to Norfolk, Virginia. Upon arrival at Norfolk, the passenger bridges were transported to Florida s Port Everglades Cruise Terminal which is one of the three busiest cruise ports worldwide. GNE WS13
