Reducing energy consumption not only means ships pollute less; it also makes commercial sense as we can cut down on our costs. To this end, last year we announced the creation of a Corporate Energy Savings Department. This year, in a sign of our long-term commitment, we invested over Euro 6 million in green refitting technology. Silicon paint has been applied to 17 ships, resulting directly in fuel savings of 10%. Following successful trials on two ro-pax ships, a propeller replacement programme is being rolled out across the fleet. Initial results show this will generate further fuel savings of around 15%. Rebulbing, fuel additives, and engine optimisation are now under study, and new refitting investments are likely to follow. Work will not stop there. We are committed to taking measures to reduce our vessels emissions, in particular sulphur and the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. In view of the 2015 IMO rules making the consumption of 0,1%-sulphur fuel mandatory in the emissions control areas of the Baltic Sea, North Sea and English Channel, we have set up a task force to liaise with the biggest European engine makers in order to monitor innovative technological solutions. Whatever the solution we eventually choose, we believe it to be self-evident that there is no effective toolbox for coping with the effects of the ultra-low sulphur content requirement, which is to be enforced via European Union legislation. While we support the final objective, it is important regulators set feasible goals. Shipowners could have easily coped with rules imposing 0,5%-sulphur fuel. This would have reduced sulphur emissions by a factor of eight, and at a reasonable cost, compared to the previously used 4%-sulphur fuel. By insisting on another very small reduction - from 0,5% to 0,1% - fuel costs are now expected to rise by around 50%, with counterproductive repercussions. Shipping, let us not forget, is the most environmentally friendly means of transport. Given this, why should our mode be penalised compared to other carbon-intensive transport modes, in particular road haulage? Fuel prices are already high, while cargo flows suffer deep fluctuations due to political instability and economic crisis. Future financing is uncertain, particularly given that banks will have to cope with the forthcoming Basel III regulations. Regulators, rather than adding to risks facing industry, should attempt to reduce them. This is the message we must hammer home. That said, our Group continues to thrive. Indeed, results for this year are running ahead of 2012, when we registered a record performance in terms of both revenues and profitability. In volume terms, in the first 9 months of 2013, we have transported 200,000 passengers and 150,000 trucks more than the same period of last year. This is part due to the flexibility of our fleet. Our Group is one of the few ro-ro/ro-pax players in the world able to chose from among 100 owned units of different types, thereby allowing us to adapt quickly to fluctuations in cargo and passenger volumes. Our success is also partly due to constant downward pressure on costs. Attention to detail has over many years paid dividends for the traditional, Naples-based companies in our Group, which have generated the lion s share of profits. The policy is also now starting to bear fruit in subsidiaries such as Minoan Lines and Finnlines. However, building up such a successful network of services would have been impossible without our human resources: 10,000 skilled and motivated people working for our organisation.

3 FLEET DEVELOPMENT Steel cutting ceremony for the first of 5 new ACL vessels On the 2nd of September the steel cutting ceremony of the first of the five new vessels ordered by Atlantic Container Line, subsidiary of the Grimaldi Group, was held at the Hudong- Zhonghua Shipbuilding (HZS) in the Chungxing island, near Shanghai. Attending the event were the President & CEO of ACL, Andrew J. Abbott and Henrik Karle, Vice-President of Marine Operations, together with the Grimaldi Corporate Technical Director Paolo Satariano and the Grimaldi Group New Buildings Project Manager Pierluigi Marmo. The new G4 (Generation 4) vessels will replace the current G3 vessels and will be the first of their type ever built. They will be bigger, faster, greener and more efficient than their predecessors. They will have a container capacity of 3,800 TEUs plus 28,900 square meters of rolling space, with a car capacity of 1,307 vehicles. Speed will be increased by 10%, yet fuel consumption per TEU will be reduced by 50%. All five vessels will be delivered in 2015, with the first to be delivered at the end of January of that year. 4 MEDITERRANEAN NETWORK The Group enhances the Salerno-Catania service From mid October daily connections between the two ports Starting from the 14th of October, the Grimaldi Group has doubled the frequency of its motorway of the sea service, linking Salerno with the port of Catania (Sicily). With the introduction of a second vessel on the service, this Grimaldi Lines route dedicated to the transport of rolling units (trucks, trailers, cars, etc.) between Campania and Eastern Sicily has become daily. Joining the ferry Eurocargo Napoli, deployed on the line inaugurated in January 2012, is her sistership Euroferry Malta. With a length of 175 metres, a gross tonnage of tonnes and a maximum speed of 18 knots, the m/v Euroferry Malta has a cargo capacity of about 120 vehicles between trailers and trucks, and 250 cars. Furthermore, the vessel can comfortably accommodate up to 60 drivers in cabins and reclining seats. Through the deployment of the ferry Euroferry Malta the Group now offers daily departures from Salerno at 19:30 hours with arrival in Catania the following day at hours. 5 The total weekly loading capacity offered by this motorway of the sea between Salerno and the Sicilian port is about 1,500 trucks and trailers, giving a substantial contribution to the development of trade between Eastern Sicily, continental Italy and the rest of Europe. Through Salerno, the goods arriving from Eastern Sicily can be loaded on board other Grimaldi vessels with destination to Sardinia, Spain and Tunisia. With the decision to further strengthen our motorway of the sea service between Salerno and Catania the Grimaldi Group contributes to the creation of a system of transport which is regular, efficient, reliable and economically convenient to transport companies operating between Eastern Sicily and the rest of Italy - affirms Guido Grimaldi, Corporate Truck & Trailer Commercial Director of the Grimaldi Group. Through our hub port of Salerno, our goal is to make Eastern Sicily closer to the rest of Italy with high quality maritime services, thus contributing to the reduction of road congestion and air and noise pollution, concludes Guido Grimaldi. In addition to Catania, currently the Grimaldi Group operates motorways of the sea between Salerno and the ports of Palermo, Cagliari, Valencia, Malta, Tunis and Tripoli. Furthermore, Salerno is the hub port of the Group in the Mediterranean and is connected with the whole Mediterranean, Northern Europe, North and South America and West Africa, through the various roll-on roll-off (ro/ro) services operated by the Group. Emanuele Grimaldi President of Confitarma The Grimaldi Group Managing Director elected as President of the Italian Shipowners Association On the 9 th of October Emanuele Grimaldi was unanimously elected new President of the Italian Shipowners Association replacing Paolo D Amico. The main points of the programme illustrated by the new President during the Association s Assembly are maintaining the competitiveness of the Italian fleet, promoting research and development in order to encourage investments with efficient, competitive, eco-friendly vessels and strengthening the International Italian shipping presence. There are still many problems hindering the further growth and development of the Italian shipping industry affirmed Mr Grimaldi-and it is important to have a united Confitarma able to face this crisis but also ready to adequately respond to the recovery and challenges that are called safety and the environment. That s why we must increase the awareness of the institutions and the public opinion about the shipping capacity to serve our country, in a safe, environmentally friendly and at the same time efficient and competitive way. I ensure my best efforts and the sector that I represent as from today - concluded Emanuele Grimaldi in order to promote and develop high quality maritime services, training of qualified and competent crew in line with the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, environmental protection in tune with the needs of a growing industry. 6 BALTIC ROUTES Finnlines strengthens its maritime network The Finnish company adds Långnäs (Åland Islands) to the Finnlink service and strengthens its line between Aarhus and Rostock In early October Finnlines further enhanced its network by launching a new passenger service from Finland and Sweden to the Åland Islands, and adding a twice-a-week service between Aarus and Rostock. Starting the 1 st of October on weekdays Finnlines added an additional call to Långnäs (Åland Islands) during the morning departures between the ports of Naantali (Finland) and Kapellskär (Sweden). In order to better satisfy a request from our customers, we started calling the Åland Islands, paying Långnäs a visit in the afternoon in both directions. We are confident to further expand this service in the next future, offering an additional call in the evening departures, affirms Line Manager Antonio Raimo. The extension to the Åland Islands is dedicated only to passengers with vehicles, thus not delaying the loading-unloading operations of the direct Finland-Sweden ro-ro traffic. 7 Emergency exercise held on board Grimaldi Lines flagship EVENTS On 15 September the ship Cruise Roma, moored in the Port of Civitavecchia, was used by the Italian Security Observatory (ONS) as the site of a health emergency simulation exercise designed to train members of the armed forces, police and disaster response units to intervene effectively in such situations. On 15 September Grimaldi Lines played a key role in a major event staged jointly by the armed forces and civil defence services. The flagship Cruise Roma, docked in the Port of Civitavecchia, was chosen by the Italian Security Observatory as the venue for a spectacular emergency preparedeness simulation exercise. On board the m/vessel Cruise Roma and on Quay 21, where the ship was moored, the ONS recreated a serious cross-border public health emergency. The exercise was devised to help train members of the armed forces, police and emergency response units to intervene effectively in such circumstances: the exercise scenario included a rapid assessment of the situation, coordination of assistance, measures to contain infectious disease outbreaks and maintenance of public order. The multiagency exercise, which lasted the whole morning, involved the largescale deployment of disaster response specialists from the Coast Guard, Fire Protection Service, Rome Prefecture and Police Headquarters, Maritime Health Service, Port Health Authorities, Ministry of the Health, Italian Red Cross, ARES 118 (Regional Health Emergency Response Unit), the State Police, Carabinieri, Inland Revenue Police and the Army as well as all of the crew of the ship Cruise Roma. At the end of the simulation, the Grimaldi flagship s commanding Officers and the Company were complimented by all the senior armed forces personnel on board for the professionalism and dedication of the entire ship s crew.
