4 Why study with CDU? For over 25 years Charles Darwin University has been the Northern Territory s leading education provider. We deliver training and education to more than 24,000 students who study at our four campuses and five centres across the Northern Territory, at our centres in Sydney and Melbourne and online. We also take training and education to the most remote parts of the Northern Territory, visiting over 150 remote communities a year. At CDU you will meet students from all corners of the Northern Territory, from interstate and from other countries. Choosing your course Think about the kind of work that interests you, what you did well in at school and what your skills and talents are. For example, if you are sociable and like working with people but are afraid of heights, you may find hospitality or tourism a better choice than arboriculture. Next, find out what qualifications you need to get into the career you want. You may already be working in an industry closely related to your chosen study area, or looking to upskill, so talk to people who already have the appropriate qualifications. 5 How to enrol Frequently asked questions What is Vocational Education and Training (VET)? VET courses at Charles Darwin University range from Certificate I to Diploma level courses. They focus on practical skills and hands-on training, and are industryfocused. When should I enrol? Many courses accept continuous enrolments, though some only take enrolments twice a year. T: E: vet-enquiries@cdu.edu.au How much does it cost to study at CDU? Fees vary according to whether you are a Territorian, from interstate or an international student, and on the course you may be interested in. Information is on the CDU website W: cdu.edu.au/cdu-vet/student-guide/fees VET FEE-Help for Diploma level studies and scholarships are available. Find out more by visiting the websites below. W: cdu.edu.au/student-central W: cdu.edu.au/cdu-vet/vetfeehelp Can I do VET courses part-time? Most VET courses offer flexible study options, allowing you to fit study in around your other commitments. What is an apprenticeship? This is a training style that combines work and study. You must have an employer and you must lodge a contract of training with Australian Apprenticeships NT. For further information refer to: W: aacnt.com.au Once you ve decided on your course you need to enrol. Enrolment forms are at W: cdu.edu.au/current-students/adminforms Arrange a time with the VET team leader or delegate in your chosen study area to discuss, complete and approve your enrolment. Information about preparing for VET study and the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) is also available. T: E: vet-enquiries@cdu.edu.au What fees do I need to pay? Most students pay fees to study VET courses at CDU. Australian and New Zealand citizens and Permanent Residents living in the NT are eligible to enrol in NT Government subsidised places. Those living outside the NT normally pay higher fees. Some higher level courses (e.g. Certificate IV or Diploma) may not be subsidised and will cost more. W: cdu.edu.au/cdu-vet/student-guide/fees Fee exemptions Some people may be exempt from Tuition Fees for various reasons, for example those who are unemployed, have a low income or live in a remote location. When you are enrolling you can check to see if you are fee exempt. Note that these exemptions only apply to NT Government subsidised places, and not full fee courses. International student fees are different to domestic fees, and international students are not normally eligible for NT Government subsidised places. W: cdu.edu.au/international for more information. If you have trouble paying the fees in a single amount, CDU has an instalment plan for VET students paying fees of at least $100. VET FEE-HELP exemptions VET FEE-HELP is part of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) that aims to remove financial barriers to study. VET FEE-HELP is available to entitled students, regardless of age or financial position and can be used to pay all or part of their tuition fees. Students must be enrolled in a VET unit of study that forms part of a course leading to the award of a Diploma with CDU. W: cdu.edu.au/cdu-vet/vetfee-help Do I need to enrol in a whole course? No. You can enrol in a single unit or a group of units; it is entirely up to you. Charles Darwin University 3

6 VET in Schools (VETiS) As a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), CDU offers selected VET programs for secondary school students across the NT. The VET in Schools (VETiS) program allows secondary school students to develop employability skills while still at school, supporting them to become work ready and allowing them to experience different jobs while still at school. The programs should be viewed as training pathways to future careers, which enable students to make informed career choices. To enrol in VETiS, you must be 15 years old at the time of enrolment unless: you are at secondary school and CDU has the school principal s endorsement for you to participate as a 14-year-old. you are at school in a remote community and are 14 years old at the time of enrolment. you are at school in a remote community and CDU has the school principal s endorsement for you to participate as a 13-year-old. How to enrol in VETiS Complete an expression of interest form, available from your School VET Coordinator or at CDU program information sessions. Successful applicants will receive a Notification of Acceptance with specific program details including units offered, program duration, attendance and performance requirements. The VETiS program delivery is flexible and varies according to client demand. Some courses are available only under an Australian apprenticeship. For further information on VETiS programs please contact your School VET Coordinator. School-based apprenticeships School-based Apprenticeships (SBA) enable students to gain a nationally accredited qualification while being employed in their selected area. This is achieved while completing their NT Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). Students usually attend training one day a week and are paid to work for their employer either one or two days per week or in a block. Once they have completed school, they can finish their apprenticeship on a full-time basis. To enquire about School Based Apprenticeships please talk to your School VET Coordinator.
