Meet your trainer and your National Placements Manager. Scan this page with Layar! Case Study: Virpal Singh SMIPA (Accounting), currently working at Transfield Services Determined to kick-start his professional career in Australia, Virpal decided to take up a Professional Year to gain opportunities. During the program at Performance Education, he learnt about the workplace environment, interviews, workforce, how to dress professionally and more. For his placement at Transfield Services, Virpal focused on being punctual and dedicated. He always asked questions and found ways to troubleshoot problems. Although he was told not to expect a job out of the placement, his host company mentor saw his diligence and that he had team leader skills, and hired him! Now, Virpal is very involved in interviewing and guiding new interns from Performance Education at Transfield Services. At our recent Host Company Appreciation event he received an award on behalf of his company. His advice for international graduates is to look for opportunities, develop yourself, work hard and try to learn as much as you can. He himself took the opportunity of a Professional Year, and turned it into career success. Even though Virpal has graduated from the course, he still refers to his Performance Education folder because he says it is still relevant to what he s doing at work today! STAGE 1: FACE-TO-FACE MODULES Encompassing seven 4-week long subjects, this first stage is designed to provide you with the theoretical knowledge and communication skills to successfully integrate into the Australian business setting in your nominated profession. You will be required to attend the campus one day a week and a choice of week and weekend days are available. STAGE 2: PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIP The 12 week Work Integrated Learning placement is where you will gain the practical experience and exposure to the Australian business environment in your nominated profession. STAGE 3: PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS During this final stage of your course you will consolidate your classroom studies and placement experiences in preparation for successfully beginning the next stage of your life working in your nominated profession in Australia. These workshops will be held over three days in Week 42 of the program. // PROFESSIONAL YEAR TIMETABLE UNIQUE TO PERFORMANCE EDUCATION // FACE-TO-FACE MODULES Australian Business Culture This subject focuses on developing your communication skills in Australian multicultural and diverse work environments. Practical and authentic scenarios, case studies and simulations are introduced so you can practise and improve these skills. You will actively participate in classroom activities that provide many opportunities to enhance your understanding of cross cultural communication, appreciation of different cultures and how these cultural differences will affect business operations in a global market. Australian Business Culture allows you to look at the role of teams in organisations and the qualities of effective teams and leaders in the workplace. Accelerating Interview Skills You will develop the skills needed to master the job selection process through a series of hands-on activities that focus on developing telephone screening and face-to-face interview skills. Skills taught include how to self-assess and develop your personal brand, enhance your online presence and master interview preparation and performance. You ll learn how to follow up on interviews and the process for receiving and accepting job offers. Long term career plans are usually a low priority for recent graduates. However, we encourage our students to develop short, medium and longer term career management strategies to achieve their goals. Finding the job is only the first step; once employed there are many things that you ll need to do to demonstrate you are the right person for the job. Employer expectations, induction and orientation programs, building workplace relationships, networking, and professional development are some of the themes reviewed in this module. Australian Workplace Environment We provide a macro to micro perspective of the Australian workplace environment by increasing your understanding and knowledge of relevant Australian workplace legislation, including Workplace Health and Safety regulations. You ll explore the development and importance of a company s vision, mission and core values statements and how they are linked to organisational, team and individual performance. Equally important is the understanding of appropriate behaviour, workplace norms, and business etiquette to allow you to settle in to your workplace with confidence. Applying Job Search Skills This focuses on how to secure employment in your profession, starting with developing self-awareness, identifying personal characteristics, and highlighting your strengths and weaknesses. We will discuss and evaluate job search strategies and methods to target appropriate job opportunities. Part of this process is understanding the hidden job market, analysing job advertisements and understanding exactly what the employer is looking for. With the support of highly experienced trainers, you will develop a tailored job application including: job application s, cover letters and resumes. Professional Workplace Meetings Workplace meetings are an integral part of any work environment and are often an essential mechanism to achieving business outcomes. This subject specifically focuses on developing skills to organise and participate effectively in business meetings. You will participate in mock meetings and learn appropriate meeting behaviour, vocabulary, arrangements and responsibilities, documentation and protocol for meeting follow up. WEEK Total Program Module OS Face-to-Face Hours: 7 Subjects Work Integrated Learning placement PA PB GS Face-to-Face Hours WIL Placement up to Total Hours 710 LEGEND: OS = Orientation Session PA = Practical Applications PB = Program Break GS = Graduation Session Professional Workplace Writing Effective workplace writing is a critical skill and one that you will be using on a daily basis in your chosen profession. The aim of Professional Workplace Writing is to hone your and report writing skills. Developing the areas of structure, style and etiquette, and grammar and language usage will be important in creating good first impressions and maintaining reputations with internal and external stakeholders. Researching, planning and organising information is essential for report writing; you will also learn drafting to include appropriate structure and design, and final submissions. Professional Workplace Communication This subject develops the essential workplace skill of communication and interaction with internal and external clients. This communication could be face-to-face or on the telephone and the context could be formal or informal. To address this, the focal areas are developing confidence, understanding clients needs, establishing rapport, building empathy, enhancing language use and actively listening. In addition, dealing with complaints appropriately and displaying cultural awareness are also key factors to build this skill. In this subject you will learn through active participation in role-plays and interactive classroom activities. // PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Unique to Performance Education, Practical Applications provides you with the opportunity to integrate your classroom studies and Work Integrated Learning placement experiences in three workshops that provide time for thoughtful reflection, consolidation of what s been learnt, and revision of key components. Content draws on the work of some of the world s leading selfmanagement, leadership and career consultants with a view to prepare you for full performance in your chosen career. This face-to-face workshop component is the final stage in preparing you for stepping into the workforce. You will be given support updating and finalising your resumés, honing interview techniques and creating a LinkedIn profile. 04 Performance Education Professional Year Programs 2016: Program Timetable 05
