5 AIPA SMIPA Program - Program outline -
6 The AIPA SMIPA program will be of at least 500 hours duration, and will consist of four stages: 1. Orientation A. Overview of the SMIPA program B. Explanation of the mentoring/coaching program to be provided. Supervisors assigned. C. Attendance and participation requirements D. Overview of the recruitment scene in Australia E. Questions and answers 2. Professional Workplace Skills for Accountants In order to maximise the benefit of the work experience component of the SMIPA, the AIPA provides participants with the opportunity to put their knowledge of accounting to use in an environment that replicates a fully functioning workplace. AIPA does this through its training company AAPA. The workplace skills component of the program will be delivered in a formal training format as well as practical work in the AAPA Practice Firm. It will address all of the prerequisite skills for successful participation in an Australian work place. It will include the following: A..Communication in the work place Written business communication By the end of the training period, participants will be able to communicate effectively in writing in a range of formats eg business letters, memos, proposals, agendas, reports, s and minutes of meetings. Verbal and non-verbal communication By the end of the training period, participants will be able to speak English more fluently and use business appropriate language accurately when dealing with colleagues, customers and managerial staff. Participants will be able to confidently take part in all business situations that require spoken language skills eg in meetings, conferences, negotiations, discussions and on the telephone. Participants will demonstrate a high level of both information gathering as well as information sharing skills. B..Group dynamics Work effectively with others During the training period participants will develop awareness of cultural differences; how they impact on workplace norms and expectations and how to adapt their behaviour to Australian workplace settings. By the end of the training period participants will demonstrate interpersonal skills which enable them to work effectively as team members and develop appropriate rapport with their colleagues, clients and managerial staff. C..Business environment Establish business and legal requirements Work effectively in an Australian business environment Apply occupational health and safety procedures Manage quality customer service Process customer complaints Solve workplace problems
7 By the end of the training period participants will have a better understanding of the legislation, codes of practice and national standards relevant to the Australian workplace. For example industrial relations, environmental issues, OHS, equal opportunity, anti-discrimination. They will also have a better understanding of industry types, their organisational structure, how they operate and the role of accounting within them. By the end of the training period participants will understand the importance of a strong code of ethics to guide business and personal decision making within the workplace. They will understand the need to work within the policies and procedures of the employing organisation and be able to align their personal work roles and responsibilities to the organisation s goals and objectives. D..Career planning and employment Develop a career plan Develop job searching skills Write an effective resume and application letter Develop interview skills By the end of the training period, participants will have experienced the skills necessary to carry out the jobs they apply for. They will be able to tailor resumes and application letters to suit specific job requirements. They will have the requisite knowledge, technical and workplace based, to allow them to respond appropriately to interview questions. Their practical work experience at AAPA will mean that they approach the work experience component of SMIPA with greater confidence. 3. Twelve Week Professional Internship This component will provide a total of 224 hours of opportunity to implement and practise the work-ready skills developed in the previous segment of the SMIPA By the end of this segment participants will have had the opportunity to carry out their agreed role/tasks in an ethical, accurate and efficient manner. They will be able to articulate their understanding of the organisation s culture, values, policies and procedures and will have demonstrated their ability to work within those parameters. Participants will have developed a deeper understanding of the business world and of the role of the various stakeholders. They will have demonstrated punctuality, appropriate dress and demeanour. It is difficult to ensure that participants experience the same levels of skills from all host companies, so before the work experience component, at the AAPA Practice Firm they are given the opportunity to practise a range of accounting tasks that would be met in different industries. 4. Review and Conclusion In this final phase, mentors, supervisors, facilitators and participants will all be involved in the review process. Performance feedback will be provided. Strengths and achievements highlighted, challenges identified and future directions indicated. Final questions will be answered. Ongoing support systems (eg. 3 months telephone technical support, graduate network) and resources will be outlined and certificates issued.
