Background UN Women in West and Central Africa supports women's leadership in democratic governance and peace building, and promotes the transformation of policy processes to reduce women's poverty, end violence against women, address women s political participation and representation, and increase access to financing and planning for advancing Gender Equality and Women s Empowerment. A key component of maintaining public, political and media attention and institutional leadership on gender issues and women s empowerment in the sub region is to support UN Women s programming and advocacy to provide greater inputs in the implementation and integration of a coordinated and comprehensive communications and resource mobilization initiatives. UN Women in West and Central Africa seeks to hire a communications associate to support the implementation of UN Women communications and advocacy goals in West and Central Africa. 2. General Objective: The primary goal of the communications strategy of UN Women West Africa and Central Africa is to strategically position issues of Gender Equality and Women s Empowerment and to raise the visibility of UN Women in the region and countries as the leading expert in the coordination and implementation of Gender Equality and women s Empowerment agenda, at regional, national and local levels. The UN Women West and Central Africa Communications strategy is built around the vision that Communications fosters Change The communications strategy has the following overall objectives: 1. To raise the visibility and increase awareness about UN Women role and leadership on Gender Equality and Women s Empowerment 1

2 2. To strategically position Gender Equality and Women s Empowerment issues at the forefront of the development agenda 3. To strengthen and support UN Women advocacy and resource mobilization objectives (i.e financial, technical and human resources ) 4. To promote public and media outreach 3. Specific Functions The main functions of the communications associate are 1. To support the implementation of the Regional and Country Communications and Advocacy strategies 2. To conduct documentation and reporting for capturing key UN Women results 3. To conduct research, data collection and analysis of best practices as it relates to UN Women s advocacy and Gender Equality and Women s Empowerment in the region 4. To support the internal and external news sharing of the organization s action in West and Central Africa for wider dissemination and knowledge sharing 5. To support writing of articles, briefs, reports and editorial products in support of storytelling and publications on UN Women on line platforms 6. To support any special projects as assigned Duties and Responsibilities Under the guidance of the Regional Director and with direct supervision by the Regional Communication Officer, the incumbent works closely with communications and programme teams the implementation of communications strategy in line with Annual Work Plans and the corporate strategies. S/he supports the Regional and country offices in preparing communications and advocacy materials as it relates to UN Women s work and Gender Equality and Women s Empowerment (GEWE). The imcumbent will: 1. Support the implementation of the Regional Communications strategy for UN Women in West and Central Africa - Supports the implementation of the Regional Office communications and strategy - Assist in the review of program and project documents, reports - Assists in the outreach messaging and products to better contribute to gender equality and UN Women s mandate - Keep partners as well as the general public well informed about UN Women s programs, initiatives, success stories and results in the region - Promotes external relations and media and public outreach: - Establish and maintain relationships with other UN agencies, government, media, civil society organizations and academia in the area od communications and advocacy on GEWE - Participates to the UNCT meetings - Organizes events and campaigns 2 2. Conduct documentation, reporting, data collection research and analysis for knowledge management - Prepares briefs, communication materials for the dissemination of news bulletins, communiqués and press releases and best practices for publications, policy materials, knowledge building /sharing

3 3 - Reviews existing documents, program reports, actions and initiatives for good practices and success stories for each country - Identifies best practices and success stories from grass root communities - Prepares draft summaries of pilot experiences in the countries of the region - Extends existing databases for disseminating newsletters, information and more to key constituencies and stakeholders including donors - Covers events and campaigns 3. Conduct writing and editing in support of UN Women storytelling and online platforms - Drafts articles for the online communications platform for UN Women in West and Central Africa to showcase results and keep partners informed on UN Women activities - Collects key information from countries and partners and donors reports - Documents lessons learned from activities and best practices from reports (UN Women sponsored programs across the sub region). - Builds databases in support of on line presence: - Conducts searches and compile relevant innovative initiatives, on the web and other sources - Engages communications focal point for sharing articles, reports, and other documents 4. Promotion of the visibility of UN Women s achievements - Support partnership building and media relations - Supports development/production of communication and advocacy instruments and materials for marketing and awareness raising activities including briefing materials and press releases in coordination with programme colleagues and the supervisor; - Support the organization and conduct media activities/events including drafting the major background notes, agreeing the terms of participation with partners, media relations, preparing talking points, invitations, press releases; - Supports integration of advocacy and communications strategies into all aspects of the Regional Office work; - Promotes, maintains and supports public information campaigns 5. Support special assignments including - Reports on existing and new media platforms within established networks - Supports identifying individuals for focus groups and outreach groups at regional and country levels - Supports the identification of Gender focused and specialized communications platforms at regional, country and local - Identifies areas of opportunities for existing communication platforms - Promotes and disseminates corporate advocacy materials for launching flagship initiatives and publications - Supports monitoring of media and news on UN Women s work ad GEWE in the region - Expected outputs/products and Expected results: - News briefs, communiqués and summary reports - Databases generated (Partners lists, media lists, etc) by thematic priority and target groups - Summary Documents on best practices, innovative work, pilot initiatives and success stories - Articles, documents and, multimedia products are shared via on online communications

4 platforms and other related communication links - Monthly reports are generated Qualifications and specialized knowledge: - Bachelors degree or equivalent with at least 3 years experience in communications, journalism, social sciences or equivalent - Or Master s degree in communications, journalism, social sciences or equivalent - Good analytical skills - Excellent writing skills in English and French - Reading skills in other languages is desired Duration of the assignment: 12 months Supervision and work arrangements: The Communications associate will be supervised by the Regional Communications Officer.The communications associate will be based in Dakar, Senmegal Ho w to Apply The application is limited to Nationals from Senegal or for residents with a work permit Interested candidate should submit their CV and a motivation letter to waroenquiries@unwomen.org with the subject line Communication Associate.
